Captain Alex Cheal re-signs for 2017 season

South Melbourne FC is pleased to retain the services of three-time championship captain Alex Cheal for the 2017 NPL Victoria Season.

Cheal needs no introduction to South fans, leading the club as captain for the past three seasons and proving to be one of the finest defenders in the state. Her form in 2016 also saw her selected for Melbourne Victory’s W-League squad for the 2016/17 season, where she has already played numerous matches in the heart of defence.

She has also been instrumental in the club finding their way back into the top-flight of Victorian football, with her loyalty and leadership an example for all young girls at our Club to follow. She was also at the forefront of implementing the One Club policy as Captain, working with the Club in reaching its lofty goals throughout the season.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Cheal was excited to be back for another season. “Last season we sat down and spoke about our objectives for the season ahead and I’d like to think that both from a club and personal perspective we achieved those. I could not be prouder of SMFC for reaching the WNPL in 2017, but the job is not done, we must have another successful season and strive towards our goals both on and off the park. I am so excited to be back and to be able to play a part in growing the club”.

Women’s Football Director Gabrielle Guiliano could not speak any higher about Cheal. “Alex is not just an amazing player, but a wonderful and genuine individual that we are proud to associate with the SMFC brand. She has lead the club with pride and passion throughout the last three seasons and we are grateful for all the work she has put in to set the standard for all the girls playing at our club. We’re thrilled to have her back in our colours for 2017 and with some wonderful new signings and familiar faces back at the club, we hope that she can lead us through another special season.”

We’d like to wish Alex all the best for the 2017 season.
