Media Release: Durakovic steps down from his Technical Director role

South Melbourne FC wishes to advise that Mehmet Durakovic has stepped down from his role as Senior Technical Director to accept the position of Head Coach of Malaysian club Selangor.

Durakovic returns to Selangor where he enjoyed great success in his playing days. In total, he played 82 matches and was instrumental in the side winning three national championships.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Mehmet Durakovic said “leaving South Melbourne was a tough decision as I was enjoying my time overseeing the Club’s Youth Development Program. I have been offered a wonderful opportunity to coach in Malaysia, which made it so difficult to leave. I would like to thank South for the opportunity to come back, and wish Chris and the playing squad all the best for next season”.

SMFC Head Coach Chris Taylor will temporarily assume the responsibilities of the Senior Technical Director position in a caretaker capacity, as the Club considers its options moving forward.

SMFC President Leo Athanasakis told smfc.com.au “we are saddened by the news that Mehmet is leaving the club, but we are equally happy that he has been offered a fantastic opportunity in Malaysia. We wish Mehmet all the best, and look forward to seeing him back at South”.
