Congratulations
to all the boys and Ange.
Not
only did they win the premiership but the boys
also took the crown in Canberra winning
The Kanga Cup, the first time by a South Melbourne
team. More importantly we
have gained entry to the 12A’s which was our
prime pre season objective. Special thanks
also to Jackie who ran the team like clock work,
she even scares me, and Mr. Stamoulis
for his generosity to the team. Ange has really
deserved the results being a great
club man and coaching through the entire season
with his painful injury. The boys
played an attacking free game with great skill and
composure and this proved beneficial
in the end as the title was decided on goal
difference. The team has qualified
for the 12A League in 2009 and with some fine
tuning should be a force next year
in their quest of an Under 13 Super League spot.
Special thanks to all for their support
to Ange during the year. No more 9.00 kick offs
for Manny, he can now retire the
sunglasses and sneak that extra hour sleep.
Super
effort lads and see you next season.
Kanga
Cup 2008 Under 11 champions
The
Kanga Cup is the longest running youth football
tournament in the southern hemisphere and is
considered the pre-eminent youth competition in
Southeast Asia and Oceania. This year’s
competition in Canberra held last week
attracted over 230 teams from interstate clubs to
visiting teams from South Korea, New Zealand and USA
. Competing in the tournament were both boys and
girls teams ranging in ages from 10 to 18 years of
age.
South
Melbourne Football Club was represented by its under
11 and under 12 teams with both teams leaving
excellent impressions. After a gallant effort the
under 12s were knocked out in the semi-final by a
South Korean school-boys team. The Under 11s
competed against 27 other teams lifting the trophy
in their age group with an emphatic 5-0 victory over
Runaway Bay from Queensland’s Gold Coast. Their
previous match was a hard fought semi-final 2-1
victory over Terrigal from the New South Wales
Central Coast district. Coach Ange Dallas and team
manager Jackie Carey have been instrumental in
instilling a strong team spirit and guiding the
youngsters to this achievement. Ange, a former South
Melbourne youth player whose career was cut short
due to injury while trialling in England, firmly
believes in the school of thought that attack is the
best form of defence. This was evident in the over
forty goals scored by the team while only conceding
three. The next objective for the team is to finish
on top of their group in the local competition. Next
year, who knows, even a European tour could be on
the horizons.
