13 SUPER LEAGUE – Mr. Michael Roski
PREMIERS
“STATE
CHAMPIONS”
Wow!
Congratulations to Michael and all the boys for a
truly exciting, unbelievable season.
This age group would have to be on a par with most
overseas teams of this age
group. This team had 8 players, and it could have
been more, including the captain,
of the Victorian U/13 State team, which achieved
the best National results by a
Victorian State side for over a decade. My offer
of using the South strips at the National
titles was declined by the FFV. Michael conducted
a strenuous selection process
pre-season and the results have justified his
selections. We do not want to go through
the same process again next season, accordingly,
would like to keep the majority
of this group, with 2 to 3 changes, with the long
term target of qualifying for the
Manchester United Cup at the end of 2009 and
flying the club colors overseas. The
boys also won the State title defeating the
North/West champions in a 4-3 thriller.
This team has completed the hat trick of
premierships commencing from under
11’s and the quadie is in sight. I thank Michael
for his efforts and I know he will
keep the boys and team focused on their long term
football goals.

Well
done to all the boys for an even consistent year
where with a bit of luck in games
they should have had a top 3 finish. A special
mention needs to be made about
Connie, the team manager, for her enormous efforts
and encouragement to players
throughout the entire season. The team lost 2 to 3
players to other lower Super
League teams during the pre season however the
replacements were more than
capable and as the season progressed so did the
team and the results. During the
last third of the season the team has been almost
unbeatable, mixing it with all the
top sides in the competition. Thanks to Ross for
coaching the team despite a difficult
year with his new work commitments and Ange for
assisting in the coaching throughout
the year. This team will benefit from playing
together this year and we expect
a top 2 finish next year. Several of the boys
improved sufficiently this season to
place pressure on our Super League team. Thank you
also to Mr. Jim Stavris for his
assistance to the club. Congratulations again to
all the players and see you next season.

The
Friendship Games is an annual event that Football
NSW hosts at Valentine Sports Park, Football NSW
headquarters in Sydney.
This
year, the Tournament commenced on Monday 7th
of July and conclude on Saturday 12th of July 2008.
The
Friendship Games features the best age group players
across Australia, representing their respective
States and Territories. The ethos behind the
Friendship Games is to foster a pressure free
atmosphere for the players which enables them to
perform at their peak in a tournament comprising the
best age group players within Australia. As such
results are not tabulated, nor a final conducted.
This acts as an introduction to the higher pressure
events the players will face in the upcoming years.
The
Victorian Metro team performed the best with no
losses and only conceding one goal for the whole
tournament. The style of football played by Victoria
was admired by other states and the Vics were
complimented on being the best team at the
tournament.
There were five South Melbourne under 13 boys
selected for the travelling squad pictured from left
to right James Karvelis (Central Defender), Jonathan
Parra (Right Wing), Peter Skapetis (Left Wing), Bradley
Blumenthal (Striker) and Philip Petreski (Central
Midfield). Peter and Bradley scored two goals each
and Philip scored three. A great effort by all our
south boys who were the core of the starting line up
at every game. Also 3 of our South Boys were named
as emergencies Carl Tai, Harrison Michaelis &
Amir. Just goes to show how much depth there is in
this team.
From
this national tournament a Select XI was selected 4
defenders, 4 midfielders, 2 strikers and 1 goalie.
Congratulations to Peter Skapetis who earned a spot
as a midfielder in this national award.
It
was also announced that for the first time Australia
will be sending an under 14 National team to the
Asia cup in 2009. This means that from this
tournament 35 boys will be invited to trial for the
national team where a squad of 20 will travel to the
Asia Cup 2009. Good Luck to all the south Boys, I am
sure they are all a good chance of selection.
