South sign former Victory defender Matthew Foschini

South Melbourne FC is pleased to announce that Matthew Foschini has joined the Club ahead of the 2016 season.

Foschini arrives at Lakeside Stadium from the Oakleigh Cannons, where he spent the second half of the 2015 season. Prior to his time at Oakleigh, Foschini played professionally at Melbourne Victory and Salgaocar FC in India’s I-League.
The 25 year old former Under 23 Australian international can play in a number of defensive positions including right back, centre-half or holding midfield. His arrival is a welcome sign for SMFC Coach Chris Taylor, who experienced a shortage of defensive cover in 2015.
Interestingly, Foschini is the son of former VFL/AFL player Silvio Foschini, who played for Aussie Rules for the South Melbourne Swans at Lakeside (when the ground was originally a VFL venue and known as Lakeside Oval). In a strange twist, his son will now play for South Melbourne at the same venue but in a different sport.
SMFC Football Director Nicholas Maikousis spoke to smfc.com.au about South’s latest signing. “Matthew is an experienced individual who can play a range of different roles for us in 2016. His experience at A-League level and abroad, as well as his physicality is something that will be welcomed and we look forward to seeing him playing for us.”
South Melbourne FC welcomes Matthew Foschini to the Club and wishes him the best for the new season ahead.
