South on top after 3-0 win over Southern United

South Melbourne is now on top of the table after running out 3-0 winners over Southern United at the Knox Regional Football Centre on Sunday.

In what was an excellent first half by the girls, Aimee Medwin was able to score the first for South with a strike from close range into the back of the net in the 9th minute.

The girls were unlucky not to be 2-0 up, after a clean strike from Michelle Verzi went wide of the post in the 17th minute. Although, not long after, a thunderous strike from in-form striker Lisa De Vanna from close range put South 2-0 up in the 27th minute.

Eliadis had an opportunity to score her first for the match, with a strike from close range missing the side net in the 32nd minute.

However, just three minutes later, leading South Melbourne goal scorer Melina Ayres was able to poke the ball into the back of the net inside the area as the girls saw themselves with a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.

Despite a positive start to Southern United in the opening minutes of the second half, Ayres had an opportunity to score her second for the match after a strike outside the box was blocked off by Bowden inside the area in the 60th minute.

Nicolaci was looking dangerous for South in the second half, with a pass to Ayres who was unable to put the finishing touches as her attempt at goal from close range was blocked off by the Southern United defence in the 69th minute.

The girls were unlucky not to score their fourth for the evening, after an Eliadis strike hit the top of the crossbar in the 74th minute.

With only the goalkeeper to beat, Nicolaci was unable to score a goal of her own after a shot inside the penalty area was saved by Southern United goalkeeper Christine Fonua in the 84th minute.

Bowden had an opportunity to score a late goal for United, with a strike outside the box going just over the crossbar in the 87th minute as South secured their tenth win for the season.

South Melbourne will now shift their focus to Alamein when the two teams meet at AAMI Park on Sunday afternoon.
