    After three long months since the bitter finals elimination against Hume City, the senior squad commenced training in preparation for the 2010 Victorian Premier League season on Tuesday night.

    With senior coach Vaughan Coveny and his assistant David Lugli in charge, the boys embarked on a rigorous time trial around the picturesque Albert Park Lake.

    As preparations for the season intensify over the next few months, smfc.com.au & smfcTV will be bringing all SMFC fans the latest news and views directly from the club.

    South Melbourne FC have confirmed the club’s first signing for the 2010 season, with Peter Zois joining from Richmond.

    The former South junior is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Victorian Premier League competition, having previously represented Australia at all youth levels as well as having a wealth of international and European experience.

    Zois’ first taste of European football came when he joined Cardiff City in the 1997/98 season. However the custodian will be remembered most for his long career in the Netherlands, where he represented both NAC Breda and Willem II Tillburg over a 10 year period.
     
    Since returning to Australia he has spent time with Altona, Frankston and Richmond in the Premier League before deciding to sign with South in 2010.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Peter was excited to be re-joining his old club.

    “South is a proud and historic club that I am proud to be a part of. After having played here as a junior, it is fantastic to be back home at the place where my career started. I look forward to getting stuck into pre-season training and meeting my new team-mates”

    Joe Montemuro Appointed SMFC Under 21 Coach

    South Melbourne FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Giuseppe (Joe) Montemuro as Coach of the Under 21s team for the 2010 season.

    SMFC Director of Football, Ange Dallas, was pleased to welcome Joe back to the Club, telling smfc.com.au “Our aim is to give young genuine potentials the chance to one day play at the highest level possible. I am aware in order to achieve and produce the best youngsters in the country you need a coach with the credentials and talent to develop these stars of the future. Joe is a renowned youth coach with immense experience who will guide our youngsters to flourish and progress in fulfilling their dreams as professional footballers”.

    Joe comes to the club with a wealth of experience, previously taking charge of Hume City and South Melbourne at Under 21 level and Sunshine Georgies in the VPL as senior coach.

    Joe will be replacing David Lugli, who was promoted to Assistant Coach to work alongside Head Coach, Vaughan Coveny. David had successfully guided the Under 21 side to second place in the 2009 season.

    The Club wishes Joe Montemuro all the best for 2010.
