South Melbourne FC hosts Dandenong Thunder at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon in what is a must-win game for the home side. South’s loss away at Green Gully last weekend sees the club sitting just above the relegation zone and needing three points to not only avoid dropping into the bottom two but to also challenge for a finals position.
Like South, Dandenong has endured a frustrating and inconsistent season. The Thunder began the season in poor form but in the last month has made significant inroads up the VPL Ladder and are now also challenging for a position in the top five. The Thunder knows how to beat South away from home, having stunned South 0-1 at Lakeside Stadium in the opening round of the 2009 season. However South goes into the match with the winning form against Dandenong, with second half goals by Marinos Gasparis and Gianni De Nittis giving Vaughan Coveny’s men a precious 0-2 win at George Andrews Reserve earlier this season.
The match kicks off at 3pm on Sunday at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.
