  • Vale Tommy Anderson

    Vale Tommy Anderson

South Melbourne FC is saddened to learn of the recent passing of 1964 championship player Tommy Anderson.

Scottish-born Anderson played football in both Scotland and England before coming to Australia and playing in the Victorian State League. He joined South Melbourne Hellas from George Cross in April 1963 and was part of the club’s successful 1964 campaign that saw South win the league by a point ahead of both George Cross and JUST. His performances that year saw him earn a place in the Australian squad that played Everton in Sydney in May 1964.

Tommy Anderson (second from right, top row) as part of the successful 1964 South Melbourne Hellas championship side

He returned to the UK at the end of the 1964 season to play for Barrow but returned to Middle Park in 1965. He informed the club about a player at Barrow named Ernie Ackerley, who arrived at South Melbourne later on that season and went on to become a club great. Tommy floated between the UK and Australia, eventually settling in Sydney and becoming a successful football journalist.

Soccer News from April 1964 announcing Tommy Anderson as part of the Australian squad to face Everton

SMFC acknowledges the role that Tommy Anderson played in a golden era for our club. We send our deepest condolences and best wishes to the Anderson family and their friends during this time of grief.
