I was recently quoted as saying, I don’t care if Instagram has more users than Twitter. If you read the article you’ll note there’s a big “if” before my not giving of said thing.
Of course, I am trivializing what Instagram is to many people. It’s a beautifully executed app that enables the creation and enjoyment of art, as well as human connection, which is often a good thing. But my rant had very little to do with it (or with Twitter). My rant was the result of increasing frustration with the one-dimensionality that those who report on, invest in, and build consumer Internet services talk about success.

Numbers are important. Number of users is important. So are lots of other things. Different services create value in different ways. Trust your gut as much (or more) than the numbers. Figure out what matters and build something good.

Once I gave the headphones a thorough once-over exam, I tried them on. As I mentioned, they have a classic over-the-ear style and just looking at them, the padding on the ear pieces seem adequate and the peak of the headband seemed to be a bit lacking, but you don’t really know comfort unless you try on the product. So, I slipped the headphones on and found them to be exquisitely comfortable. Once I gave the headphones a thorough once-over exam, I tried them on. Just like every other human on the planet, I have epically awesome days and days when life just turne against me. And while I can’t stand most self-help (see: tired quotes over stock photography on Instagram), sometimes I need a little pick-me-up. And most of the time, in order to get out of a slump (because my brain leans more into math/science than anything else), I need to drop a logic bomb on my ass.

Yes, this is a long article. But here’s the thing — if you’re reading this in your inbox and are already like, “fuck this!” delete it. No hard feelings. If you’re reading this in a browser on a website, and you see how tiny the scroll-bar is because of how far you still have to scroll to get to the bottom, close this tab and go back to 140-character tidbits of advice. Still with me? Phew. Just had to weed out all the folks from points: #1, #4 and #8. Welcome friends, onward we go.

  • Captain Alex Cheal re-signs for 2017 season

Captain Alex Cheal re-signs for 2017 season

South Melbourne FC is pleased to retain the services of three-time championship captain Alex Cheal for the 2017 NPL Victoria Season.

Cheal needs no introduction to South fans, leading the club as captain for the past three seasons and proving to be one of the finest defenders in the state. Her form in 2016 also saw her selected for Melbourne Victory’s W-League squad for the 2016/17 season, where she has already played numerous matches in the heart of defence.

She has also been instrumental in the club finding their way back into the top-flight of Victorian football, with her loyalty and leadership an example for all young girls at our Club to follow. She was also at the forefront of implementing the One Club policy as Captain, working with the Club in reaching its lofty goals throughout the season.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Cheal was excited to be back for another season. “Last season we sat down and spoke about our objectives for the season ahead and I’d like to think that both from a club and personal perspective we achieved those. I could not be prouder of SMFC for reaching the WNPL in 2017, but the job is not done, we must have another successful season and strive towards our goals both on and off the park. I am so excited to be back and to be able to play a part in growing the club”.

Women’s Football Director Gabrielle Guiliano could not speak any higher about Cheal. “Alex is not just an amazing player, but a wonderful and genuine individual that we are proud to associate with the SMFC brand. She has lead the club with pride and passion throughout the last three seasons and we are grateful for all the work she has put in to set the standard for all the girls playing at our club. We’re thrilled to have her back in our colours for 2017 and with some wonderful new signings and familiar faces back at the club, we hope that she can lead us through another special season.”

We’d like to wish Alex all the best for the 2017 season.

South Melbourne’s Senior Men’s Team will take on newly promoted North Geelong Warriors in our first pre-season fixture of 2017 this Saturday at Lakeside Stadium.

The match will also be an opportunity for fans of both clubs to donate towards former NSL Championship Player David Cervinski’s Fund. David Has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma and is currently undergoing treatment and fighting the battle of his life.
His mates from the Wollongong Wolves are putting this campaign together to raise funds to assist David at this critical time in his life.

Cervinski was a fierce competitor every time we played against him through his times at our rivals Melbourne Knights and Wollongong. Despite being on the other side of the park, the Club urges the SMFC Family to get behind this cause and donate on the day or online.

Kick-off for the match is at 11.30am and cost of entry is via a donation to the cause. Players and Coaches from SMFC will also be making a donation.

    First impressions.

Many years ago, I worked for my parents who own a video production company. Because it is a family business, you inevitably end up wearing many hats and being the czar of many different jobs. I mainly managed projects and worked as a video editor. On production, there were times that I was called on to work as an audio tech and was made to wear headphones on long production days. In those days, having a really good set of headphones that picked up every nuance of sound was essential to making sure the client got what they needed. Many years ago, I worked for my parents who own a video production company. In those days, having a really good set of headphones that picked up every nuance of sound was essential to making sure the client got what they needed.

Naturally, my first impression of these headphones is based off of the look of them. They have a classic over-the-ear style that is highlighted by a blue LED light that indicates the power for the noise canceling. The padding on the ear pieces seems adequate for extended usage periods.

    They are wired headphones, but the 3.5mm stereo mini-plug cable is detachable. Something else I noticed right of the bat was the very nice carrying case that comes with them. It has a hard plastic exterior with a soft cloth interior that helps to protect the surface of the headphones from scratches. I never truly appreciated cases for headphones until I started carrying them from place-to-place. Now I can’t imagine not having a case.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”50″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”0″ bottom_padding=”0″ back_color=”color-wayh” back_image=”2286″ back_position=”center top” parallax=”yes” overlay_color=”color-wayh” overlay_alpha=”60″ gutter_size=”3″ shift_y=”0″ row_height_use_pixel=””][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ position_vertical=”middle” align_horizontal=”align_center” override_padding=”yes” column_padding=”2″ style=”dark” overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ medium_width=”0″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ zoom_width=”0″ zoom_height=”0″ width=”1/1″][vc_custom_heading heading_semantic=”h6″ text_size=”h1″ text_height=”fontheight-357766″ text_font=”font-175345″ text_weight=”400″ sub_lead=”yes” sub_reduced=”yes” text_uppercase=”” subheading=”John Williams”]It’s safe to say that because of my unique professional experiences, I’ve tested out a lot of headphones.[/vc_custom_heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row unlock_row=”” row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”3″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ shift_y=”0″ row_height_use_pixel=””][vc_column column_width_use_pixel=”yes” overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ medium_width=”0″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ zoom_width=”0″ zoom_height=”0″ column_width_pixel=”800″][vc_column_text]

    A perfect fit.

So, I slipped the headphones on and found them to be exquisitely comfortable. In order to test how voices sounded, and the overall art of sound mixing, I pulled up Netflix on my iPad Air 2 and watched a few minutes of a movie to hear all the nuances of the film. None of them were lost. In fact, I ended up hearing sounds that I hadn’t heard before. Echoes…birds chirping…wind blowing through trees…breathing of the characters…it was very impressive what the headphones ended up bringing out for me.

    Quality.

Now that I had the headphones on my head, I was finally ready to plug and play some music. I plugged the provided cable into the jack on the headphones and then the one on my iPhone 6. Then I called up Pandora. I tend to have a very eclectic music purview and have many stations set up for different moods. From John Williams to Fallout Boy, the sound quality of these headphones was remarkable. There is an amazing depth of sound and incredible highs and lows that make listening to music a truly breathtaking experience.

    niteros

South Melbourne FC is excited to announce the signing of Antonia Niteros for the 2017 NPL Victoria Season.

The former Ashburton and Casey player joins the club following one season in the in inaugural NPL Victoria Women’s Competition, where she captained Southern United and represented Victoria in the Bass Strait Cup.

Niteros is a tough, vocal and uncompromising defender who will immediately add to SMFC’s defensive stocks for the season ahead. By doing so, she will link up with new signing Alex Gummer and Captain Alex Cheal to form a formidable defensive unit.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Niteros was excited to have joined the club. “South has always been a club that I have admired due to their professionalism of both the players and the club itself. It has been an environment that I’ve personally aspired to be a part of and felt right at home during my first pre-season session. I am looking forward to playing with a great group of girls and playing under a great Coach in Soc, who has great vision for the team and the club”.

Women’s Football Director Gabrielle Guiliano was pleased to sign another leader to the club. “Toni joins the club coming off a great season where she developed into a leader for Southern United. While she will add a great deal to our defence on the park, we’ve signed her also to add some leadership to the club through her experiences as a captain and a state representative in 2016”.

Martineau re-signs for 2017 NPL Season

    natalie

South Melbourne FC is pleased to announce that it has re-signed Canadian midfielder and 2016 Best and Fairest Winner Natalie Martineau for the 2017 NPL Victoria Season.

Martineau remained at the Club in 2016, despite numerous offers from rival clubs and was subsequently a part of her third championship in a row following our State One triumph in September.

In her three seasons with the club, the Canadian-born midfielder has impressed everyone with her exceptional work ethic and creative play. Natalie was an integral part of SMWFC’s back-to-back WPL Championships in 2014-2015 and continues to provide Coach Socrates Nicolaides with a strong leader both on and off the park.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Martineau was excited about the new challenges ahead. “Just like all the girls, I am excited that we are now back in the top flight of Victorian Football and where we belong. This year was a difficult season, but we enjoyed every minute of it, including the increased exposure through the Club’s media team and transitioning into becoming one club. With this behind us and the fact we are now in the NPL, we all can’t wait to get started for what we believe is going to be a huge season.”

Women’s Football Director Gabrielle Guiliano shared Natalie’s thoughts on the past season. “Natalie showed great loyalty in being part of the Club in 2016 and had an outstanding season leading a very young and inexperienced team to championship glory. As we look forward to 2017, her leadership and class in the middle of the park will add quite a bit once again to the squad”.

We wish Natalie all the best for the 2017 NPL season.

The 24-year-old defender is an extremely experienced acquisition for the club, having played numerous seasons in the W-League with both Victory and Adelaide United. She has also spent time abroad, playing for Doncaster Rovers in the English Women’s Super League.

  • Goal Machine Eliadis returns home for 2017 season

Goal Machine Eliadis returns home for 2017 season

    Eliadis

South Melbourne FC is excited to announce its first signing with Tiffany Eliadis returning for the 2017 NPL Victoria Women’s Season.

Eliadis is a name that should be familiar with many South fans, having made her debut with the Club as a 14-Year-Old during the 2010 season in the Women’s Premier League. Since then, she has gone on to become one of the dangerous forwards in the state.

Her outstanding performances in a South shirt saw her win the FFV Gold Medal twice and numerous Golden Boot Awards for both Club and Competition, having scored 63 goals in her last three seasons with the club. It was also with this amazing form behind her, that saw Tiffany rewarded with a W-League contract at Melbourne Victory.

Despite moving away from the club in 2016, South’s inclusion back into the top-flight of Victorian Football will see Eliadis return to the place she calls home. Speaking to smfc.com.au, she was excited to be back at the place where it all began. “Words can’t describe how happy I am at the moment being back in a South shirt. I love the club and the people here, so it was a simple decision for me to come home. I can’t wait to get started and hope we can make our mark in 2017 with this fantastic group as we have quite a bit to prove following a year away from the top-flight”.

Head of Women’s Football Gabrielle Guiliano was also extremely excited to have Tiffany back in a South shirt. “Tiffany is not only a quality player but a fantastic person to have back at the Club and everyone is excited see her in our shirt again. Her ability to score goals at the highest level is second to none and we can’t wait to see her running around Lakeside Stadium again in 2017.”

We wish Tiffany all the best for the 2017 season.
