    South sign forward Luka Ninkovic

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm that Luka Ninkovic has signed for the club ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

    Luka is a powerful forward who has experience across the top tier of the National Premier League here in Victoria. He joined the club after playing for Bentleigh earlier this year, though many South fans would know him from his days at Heidelberg United where he was part of the Warriors Championship winning squad.

    He adds significant depth to our attacking third and will be looking to link up with our other forwards to provide another big target and goal scoring option in the box.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Football Director Andrew Mesourouni was pleased with the signing.

    “Luka is a proven goal scorer , technically balanced and strong in the air. An explosive player and a great guy , giving us additional strength up front.”
    He will join us in the window and will be available for selection soon after.”

    Luka will replace Danny Kim on our roster, with the midfielder departing the club also during the window.

    South launches into International Women’s Day by announcing NPLW leaders

    South Melbourne FC is pleased to announce that Akeisha Sandhu and Danielle Wise will lead the club in 2023, with both players selected as co-captains for our NPLW Victoria Womens squad.

    Sandhu continues on from her role as captain last season, where she was able to provide the club with outstanding leadership during some difficult moments throughout the season as well as continue to perform on the park. Wise joins us in 2023 and has immediately pushed a new standard through the women’s training program, leading the way and challenging her playing group along the way.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Senior Coach George Georgiadis was excited with the appointment. “I feel that it provides a great reward to Akeisha for the work she has put over the past 12 months to enhance herself as a leader at this level and of our club. Danielle came to our club and young group as someone who we felt would add not only a great amount of experience on the park but also throughout the club having been an excellent player in the NPLW for numerous seasons now. Both girls have their own unique way of leading and I am extremely pleased that they have been able to work with one another to drive standards throughout a very challenging pre-season to date.”

    The club can also confirm that Janna Lawson and Brianne Reed will also form part of the extended leadership group as Vice Captain and Deputy Vice Captain.

    We congratulate all four individuals on their appointment and look forward to seeing them represent the club in their new roles on March 18th at Lakeside Stadium.

    South sign midfielder Zoe Lambi

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the signing of Zoe Lambi for the 2023 NPLW Victoria Season.

    Lambi joins us from Queensland’s NPL Competition where she established herself as one of the premier midfielders in that competition. Her workrate, ability to win the ball and distribute it calmly makes her
    a key player for the club in 2023, as well as her ability to get forward and join the attacking third to either supply or score goals on her own accord.

    She was also selected in the 2022 Queensland NPLW Team of the Season.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Senior Coach George Georgiadis was pleased with the signing. “Zoe is a player we are thrilled to have part of our club and someone who brings a great deal of skill and experience into the middle of the park. We cannot wait to see her on Lakeside Stadium representing our proud club as we build towards this season.”

    Dominican Republic International Brianne Reed Signs

    South Melbourne is thrilled to announce the signing of current Dominican Republic International Central Defender Brianne Reed.

    The American-born Reed joins us directly from FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, where she was proudly part of the Danish Club winning the 2020 Cup Competition which was their first major piece of Silverware. She has also played for FC Kansas City in the NWSL, taken as the 18th pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft.

    Reed is a powerful central defender who commands the ball both in the air and on ground level. As well as her physical attributes and aggressive style of play, her leadership both on and off the park is a stand out and something that coach George Georgiadis will be looking to immediately add to his young squad.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, SMFC Women’s Football Director Theo Chronis was elated with the signing. “It’s great to welcome Brianne into our squad as a marquee International signing. She brings with her experience both throughout American and European football and we are naturally thrilled to have someone of her calibre play for our famous club.”

    Senior Coach George Georgiadis was also excited to have Brianne in the heart of his defence. “When we heard Brianne was available we were extremely keen to bring her to Australia and into our club. An outstanding person with natural leadership qualities, she will not only bring a high quality defender into the squad but a leader who can also help grow the squad around her.”

    We would like to welcome Brianne Reed to Australia and to our club and we look forward to her joining the squad in the next few weeks for pre-season.

    South sign New Zealand attacker Tayla Christensen

    South Melbourne FC would like to announce the signing of New Zealand attacker Tayla Christensen for the 2023 NPLW Victoria Season.

    Christensen adds significant bite to South’s attacking third with an ability to play in any role across both attack and midfield.

    She joins us from Viajes InterRías in Spain, with previous experience at FC Malaga City, TCU University in the United States and a representative of the 2012, 2014 and 2016 New Zealand Youth squads that made it to the World Cup.

    Tayla brings added experience and a proven goalscorer alongside an already potent attacking South attack.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Senior Coach George Georgiadis was elated with his new international signing. “Tayla compliments our squad with her ability across many different positions as well as her experience in both the American College System and throughout playing in Spain. She’s quick, direct and can score goals which is what we want to see.

    We wish Tayla all the best in 2023 and welcome her officially to the SMFC Family.

    Hancock arrives at Lakeside Stadium for 2023 season

    South Melbourne FC is pleased to confirm the signing of Nathaniel Hancock from the United Arab Emirates for the 2023 NPL Victoria Season.

    Hancock is a versatile player who can play in any position across the back four or midfield and will be
    looking to add further toughness to the SMFC lineup.

    Prior to his time in the UAE, he had an impressive stint at Adelaide Raiders after arriving from St George in NSW.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Senior Football Director Andrew Mesourouni welcomed Nathaniel to the club. “He is
    an extremely versatile and tough player who can play in a number of roles to help the team. With experience at NPL level and abroad,
    we are looking forward to him having an impact throughout the season.”

    Hancock arrived back in Australia last week and had his first session with his team ahead of the week away in Shepparton
    with the squad.

    Kosta Emmanuel joins SMFC

    South Melbourne FC can confirm the signing of young winger Kosta Emmanuel for the 2023 NPL Victoria season.

    Emmanuel burst onto the scene at Brunswick City, with his lightning speed and ability to get behind defenders giving him an opportunity at senior level after progressing through the junior ranks.

    He then moved onto Eastern Lions in 2022 and is looking forward to making the step up into our squad and as part of Esteban Quintas’ attacking lineup.

    As well as raw speed, Emmanuel will also pose a threat in front of goal where he has found the net on numerous occasions over the past 3-4 seasons at each level he has played at.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Senior Football Director Andrew Mesourouni welcomed Kosta to the club. “We are very excited to what Kosta brings to our playing group in 2023. As a pure winger with extreme pace we are looking forward to him playing a role throughout the season and adding significant bite to our attack.”

    South sign striker Riak for 2023 season

    South Melbourne FC can confirm the signing of striker Ajak Riak for the 2023 NPL Victoria season.

    Riak joins the club following a highly successful year at Bentleigh, providing the Greens with a dynamic target in the front third that contributed so much to their attacking ways this season. This includes scoring in excess of 10 goals across all club matches, while providing assists for many more.

    Riak is expected to slot into the new South attack with an ability to play both as a traditional centre forward, as well as on either wing.

    He will link up with new signing Ali Sulemani and former teammates Danny Kim and Jack Painter-Andrews in a rejuvenated South attacking half.

    Speaking to SMFC Media Football Director Andrew Mesourouni was pleased with the acquisition. “Ajak is an exciting forward and one that was key in Bentleigh reaching the NPL Finals and winning the Dockerty Cup. He’s big, strong and quick with the ball at his feet, so we are excited to see what he can do at home on Lakeside Stadium.”

    We can’t wait to see Ajak in our colours when the season commences.

    Betti Michael returns home to Lakeside

    SMFC can confirm that our busy off-season has continued with the signing of young forward Betti Michael for the 2023 NPLW Victoria season.

    Betti returns to SMFC where she has previously played her junior football, following stints with both Alamein and FV Emerging.

    A versatile attacker with speed to burn, Betti will look to add to an already potent attacking lineup that has been constructed by coach George Georgiadis. With an ability to
    play anywhere as a striker or wide across the front third, we look forward to adding Betti to the squad.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, SMFC Womens Football Director Theo Chronis welcomed Betti back to the club. “It’s great to have Betti return to the club and at a place where
    she was able to make her senior NPLW debut during the 2019 season. Like all of our signings to date, she brings not only talent off the park but another fantastic person
    to bring into the senior group for 2023.”

    Senior Coach George Georgiadis was also pleased to sign Betti. “We really struggled in attack at times last season, so to strengthen the squad with a player of Betti’s quality
    is something we are pleased to do. With her pace and ability, she has the ability to catch defences off-guard and we are excited to add her with Danielle Wise to our existing
    group of attackers.”

    Leia Varley returns to Lakeside in 2023

    South Melbourne FC is thrilled to announce the signing of central defender Leia Varley, who returns to the club for the 2023 NPL Victoria season.

    Many South fans will remember Leia breaking into the club’s first team at only 16 years of age during the 2018 season, before playing a key role in the club reaching the 2019 Semi Final.

    Now at age 20, Leia provides coach George Georgiadis with a strong option in the heart of the South defence. Since her time at South, Leia has gained experience whilst playing in the W-League for Adelaide United and again was a standout for FV Emerging.

    Speaking to SMFC Media, Football Director Theo Chronis was excited to welcome Leia to the club. “It’s great to have Leia return to a place that saw her commence her senior football journey. She has become an established defender who is incredibly tough at the contest. We look forward to her bringing those attributes to the club in 2023.”

    Coach George Georgiadis was equally excited to welcome his new centre back. “She’s an outstanding and ball playing central defender who has experience at both national and state level. We’re pleased that she chose to return to Lakeside, a place where we think she can excel as a senior football player and become one of the premier defenders in the competition. We can’t wait to have her start with us.”

    The club welcomes Leia back to her home at Lakeside and wishes her the best for the 2023 season.
