South Melbourne FC - FFA Cup - Yianni Panakos

On Saturday the Senior Men’s team travelled to Grange Reserve in Hoppers Crossing to take on Werribee City FC in the clubs first qualifying round for the 2021 FFA Cup

Coach Esteban Quintas provided a number of players with their competitive debut in the Senior Men’s team. Sasha Murphy and James Burgess both started on the pitch in the FFA cup qualifier and featured heavily throughout the fixture. A solid performance over the ninety minutes saw a robust defensive effort resulting in a cleansheet, Burgess being unbeaten in goal. Up front it was an attacking foray with constant attacks into the final third. Six times the ball found the net with Zac Bates leading the charge. Bates would score twice securing his brace and he was backed up by Henry Hore, Freddie Sey and skipper Brad Norton.

Off the bench, 17 year old young gun Yianni Panakos was the third player making his debut and he was thrown straight into the mix by Coach Quintas and Captain Norton. With the referee having blown the whistle for a penalty, Panakos was handed the responsiblity and honour of taking the spot kick. He slid the ball into the bottom right of the net and in doing so recorded name in the record books as having scored on debut for the Senior team.

Senior Team Manager Kris Peladrinos spoke to Panakos after the match, asking him to share his thoughts on the experience. “There’s no better feeling really than scoring a goal. Pre-seaon I got my first one in a friendly and now to get one in a competitive game really hits the heart. The instructions from Esteban prior to coming on to the pitch were just to be myself. Do my thing in the final third but also work hard defensively” he said.

Peladrinos also reflect on Panakos’ journey at the club indicating that he joined the club almost a decade ago. He started with the Under 9s and having been a consistent performer throughout the years in the NPL Youth program culminating as a member of the 2019 Championship winning Under 20s squad.

The 0-6 win over Werribee City FC in the FFA Cup qualifier progresses the club through to the next round. A mid-week fixture between April 26 and May 7 will be the next opportunity to share the ‘Magic of the Cup’. Football Victoria has not yet announced the date of the FFA Cup draw for Round 5 however it is expected to occur on Monday 12th April.

First win in the 2021 Nike FC Cup

South Melbourne FC recorded a win on Friday evening in its first outing in the 2021 Nike FC Cup

The Women’s State Knockout Cup reached its third round for the year on Easter weekend with clubs from the National Premier League making their first appearance. South Melbourne FC drew an away fixture and travelled to Jubilee Park to face off against Ringwood City FC.

Sublime conditions greeted both teams leading to a tactical first half of football. South on the attack and Ringwood defending stoutly. Numerous opportunties presented themselves however the girls in blue were unable to find the net until Lucy Johnson fired a long range rocket into the bottom right of the net. South would lead 0-1 at the break.

In the second half the game opened up with more free flowing passing and wide play using both the left and right sides. Janna Lawson proved elusive for the Ringwood defence on the right making nunerous plays into the penalty area. It was Lucy Johnson again who found the net to double the lead with the teams third goal being created by another terrific run by Lawson setting up Candela Ferrreya Bas for the tap in.

Three goals to the good and the result secured, coach Samuel Young turned to the bench to provide match time for the club’s youth players. Mila Diliberto, Khadija Izaz, Emilie Keppens,  Talisa Soto and Goal Keeper Evie Bowen all from the Under 17s came on making their Senior football debuts.

Speaking to smfc.com.au after the match, Captain Jenna Lawson said “I don’t think we started the way we wanted to. I think the first half was a little bit messy and we didn’t make the most of our opportunities. We weren’t as quick in transition as we would have liked to have been. Going into half time at one nil probably wasn’t where we wanted to be. We resurrected that in the second half and finished strongly which is good going into round one next week.”

“I was a good effort across the board, we all had our moments. Some better than others. Lucy was really strong in the midfield., Zoe at the back, clean sheet obviously a good thing and we were creating opportunities on both sides. Our Under 17 players came on., one nearly scored and one nearly got an assist so a great effort from them on their senior debut.” she said.

The Senior Women will commence their WNPL campaign on Monday 12th April at the Veneto Club taking on FC Bulleen Lions. Kick off at 8.15pm.  The Youth Girls teams travel to Kingston Health next week to take on Bayside United in Round 6 of their season.

    Tuesday 30 March 2021

In partnership with Australian Blind Football, the club hosted a coaches training session. The aim was to equip coaches and volunteers with the skills to understand the game and how to adapt to effectively communicate with and coach blind and vision impaired players.

The three hour course was undertaken at the synethic pitch in Albert Park. Using audible footballs and portable goals, the players were able to return to football for the first time since December 2020 and participate in the coaching education.

Speaking to smfc.com.au the clubs Football Coordinator of All bilities Programs Skip Fulton said “today was a really great start to the year and for the program in general. We had over fiften people involved from players to volunteers to coaches. Our youngest participant Mikhail came down for the very first time to try it out and he loved it.”

“Our program will see training sessions for blind and vision impaired players run from now all the way through until October. We want to prepare the players for matches against other state teams including the likes of Brisbane Olympic, Adelaide Comets and Perth SC. Furthermore there are four National Training Camps this year and with national selection looming we want our South Melbourne squad to be best situated to get a place in the Australian squad.”

The blind and vision impaired football activities are just one aspect of the clubs broader All Abilities Program. South Melbourne FC aims to present the most diverse and inclusive All Abilities Football program in Australia. The club embraces the Football Victoria strategy of Football4All recognising that sport is about fairness and equality, respect and dignity.

We welcome anyone who has a physical or intellectual disability, of all ages, all genders and all abilities to join us. You can read more information about this program and how to participate on our All Abiliities Football page.

  • South Melbourne launches Blind Football team

South Melbourne launches Blind Football team

South Melbourne launches Blind Football team

As part of today’s celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, South Melbourne FC is proud to launch an ambitious partnership with Australian Blind Football.

There are two versions of the game of blind football. Blind football (B1 or 5 a side football) is played by athletes who are totally blind. Vision impaired futsal (partially sighted futsal) is played by athletes who are vision impaired. Blind Football (B1) is an internationally recognised sport played at the Asian Championships and the Paralympics.

Creating a new all abilities opportunity in the form of a Blind Football team is an exciting expansion of the South Melbourne football program as we move into 2021. The partnership with the club will provide a home-base in Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium with regular training sessions and open public come-and-try events to grow the game. Australian Blind Football is building a network of clubs around the country with the aim of having a competitive league established in the coming years. As the only club in Victoria, South Melbourne will be at the forefront of this initiative as we support the development of our players. Our blind footballers will represent Victoria at national competitions and participate in National training Camps as they strive to cement their position in the national team.

Former Senior Men’s player and Theo Marmaras Medal winner for Player of the season in 2009, Sebastian Petrovich is now involved as a volunteer and referee for Blind Football in Victoria. Sebastian told smfc.com.au “We are very grateful for the partnership with South Melbourne. The club has been very welcoming and it’s going to be an amazing time for the future advertising of the sport and building pathways into the future for the blind football team.”

Current senior players Marcus Schroen and Matthew Loutrakis took time away from a pre-seaon training session to spend time with the new team. Donning blind folds and being put through a number of drills they gained an appreciation of this style of football. Talking to the players also gave them an insight into the importance communication. Marcus Schroen shared his thoughts saying “it was an incredibly humbling and amazing experience to play football as they do. It’s inspiring to see what they do and they are courageous to get out there and have a go. South Melbourne is very much a community club with so many things we do in the community that people don’t know about. Our supporters will be familiar with the Senior Men and Women, but it’s also about our junior boys and girls, the Mini Roos, our Powerchair team and now our blind footballers. We also have links with local schools providing coaching and development programs and broader things such as our relationship with the Blue Ribbon Foundation and the Victoria Police Soccer Club.”

Shae Skinner, one of the club’s new team members told smfc.com.au about her journey in the game saying “I have been playing football for about five or six years. As part of the Australian team we travelled to Kochi in India in 2018 for our first international competition against the Indian Blind Football team. I was also selected to travel to Japan in 20129 with an invitation from the International Blind Sports Federation female to take part in an all-female blind football international training camp. I am looking forward to representing South Melbourne and playing for the club, as well as more opportunities to play for Australia and travel overseas”

Amir Abdi, team member and Captain of the Australian national Blind Football team has today been appointed by Football Victoria as their Blind Football Project Coordinator. In the part-time role, Amir will work closely with Football Victoria’s Inclusion team, providing valuable input to develop programs that provide greater access for blind or partially sighted Victorians.

South Melbourne President Nicholas Miakousis told smfc.com.au “I’m really proud of the work done by our club together with Dave Connolly from Australian Blind Football to get this program up and running. At South Melbourne we have always advocated for aspirational football where any player or club has the potential to reach the top of the game both here in Australia and Internationally. The establishment of the blind football team is another aspect of aspirational football helping people achieve the best they can. I am looking forward to seeing South Melbourne FC players represent not only the club and Victoria but also Australia at major international sporting events like the Paralympics.”

The South Melbourne Blind Football team will be based at Lakeside Stadium and host regular free come-and-try sessions for the community commencing in early 2021.

  • The first month of pandemic football training

The first month of pandemic football training

It’s been a month since we returned to training following the isolation and lock-down of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Extensive work by Football Victoria paved the way for the structured return to training with a set of guidelines developed in accordance with the medical advice of the Chief Health Officer and Sport and Recreation Victoria.

The club worked in conjunction with Lakeside Stadium to establish protocols to comply with the requirements which over the last four weeks have become just part of the routine.

That first night on Thursday May 21st saw two groups of ten players, split fifteen minutes apart, file through the gates at Lakeside Stadium following temperature checks and health screening. Under the watchful eye of Team Manager Kris Peladarinos, the players experienced the pouring rain and eased back into training with a sixty minute session directed by Senior Coach Esteban Quintas.

As a state government Stadium, there were additional measures the Lakeside Duty Managers were responsible for and the preparations made by Football Director Andrew Mesourouni laid the foundation for a successful reintroduction to football.

Team Manager Kris Peladarinos said “that first night back was obviously a bit of an adjustment but the effort and planning with Andrew and Kon meant we were ready to go.”

“I had reinforced with the players in the lead up to that Thursday night what the requirements were and what they could expect. There were a lot of reminders and initially the players took a few sessions to adjust to the changes, but now they’ve gotten used to it all.”

A lot has happened in the last four weeks both on and off the pitch. Behind the scenes consultation with clubs and Football Victoria has culminated in the season structure being finalised and a start date of Saturday 25th July.

“It is very encouraging we now have a start date to work towards. The further easing of restrictions means as of today we have access to the change rooms. It is a small but significant step in getting the team back into their regular routine. Things such as the physio benches, the equipment, the whiteboards and the TV for video analysis will help bring back the mindset for competitive football” Peladarinos said.

An eight team finals series beckons featuring home and away fixtures for the first time in the NPL era. Club President Nicholas Maikousis continues to work behind the scenes with Football Victoria and other club presidents to schedule the remaining matches in the 2020 season.

  • South Melbourne FC returns to football

South Melbourne FC returns to football

    To the SMFC Family,

2020 has been a challenging year to date, as we continue to face the unprecedented situation that has arisen due to the threat of Covid-19. We have been unable to meet our commitment of regular members forums & cancelled a South in Business event with 300 confirmed attendees, which included many new potential corporate partners.

I would like to thank the entire SMFC family, including members, players, sponsors, supporters and the wider football community for their patience regarding this matter.

Many would have seen announcements from Football Victoria or heard about some matters surrounding the safe return of football for the 2020 season. Just like each club in the state and around the globe, SMFC has not been immune from a vast array of issues directly associated with Covid-19.

Our Board has worked proactively through this period and considered a range of options for what we feel works best not only for our football club but for the game as a whole. The physical and mental health and wellbeing of our players, coaches and staff has been our priority. This together with the broader impact on the club, its members and supporters has seen the need to carefully balance and evaluate the implications of resuming football in 2020 or deferring competitive fixtures well into the new year.
Our primary purpose of SMFC as a football club is to play football, it is fundamentally why we exist, our DNA.  It is for this reason that we fully endorse the return of competitive football in Victoria as soon as possible and the resumption of the 2020 season. We owe this to our players, coaches, their families and of course, as a members-based football club, our members and supporters.

We are working with Lakeside Stadium, Parks Victoria and Councils to share our training plans and resume training as soon as practical. This includes all NPL Juniors (both boys and girls), Miniroos and our NPL Senior Program (which includes Senior Men & Women, Under 20s, Under 19s and Under 18s).

The club welcomes the announcement yesterday by Football Victoria on proposed target dates for the resumption of competitive football. This is exciting news and with the anticipated easing of restrictions by the State Government we could once again be on the pitch a month from now.

Football Victoria is planning for the Senior Women’s football to resume in late June or early July with the potential for a reduced season fixture. Our Women’s football department is planning for this with the squad looking forward to getting on pitch and playing competitive football.

Football Victoria is hopeful for Senior Men’s football to resume in July but acknowledges there are a number of complexities to be worked through. The Club has been involved in a series of meetings of key stakeholders including Football Victoria, the AAFC and fellow NPL Victoria clubs. While some clubs have been apprehensive about resuming football, we are fully committed about completing the 2020 season. We have outlined this position on numerous occasions in our meetings to date. We continue to work with all stakeholders to assist Football Victoria in developing a framework under which every club can play, prosper & manage their own affairs with however an underlying level of protection.

Some of the considerations we have canvassed at these meetings include the following:

    • Continued streaming of all NPL Men’s and matches. This could extend to NPL 2 and NPL 3.
    • Clear guidelines to be developed by Football Victoria for return to play scenarios, including appropriate risk management for all participants. This has already been done for training purposes.
    • No relegation from any of the NPL leagues which will allow clubs who can no longer field a strong squad to promote young footballers without the fear of being relegated.
    • We are open to the concept of Promotion from NPL 2 and NPL 3 to remain, continuing to embrace aspirational football and provide any club to strive to be the best it can be.
    • Ability for all clubs to fairly renegotiate player payments due to reduced revenue from gate takings, canteen and sponsorship revenue.
    • We are flexible regarding transfer periods.
    • Reduction in participation fees & other costs controlled by the Federation to assist clubs maintain their cash flow during this period.
    • Any other Government support

In an era of uncertainty and high anxiety, football can play a key role in assisting society to rebuild. Football brings joy to many people around the globe and our club is no different. While we strongly believe that football will return with our members being able to attend matches later in the year, we are also committed to bringing the games direct to our fans through the Football Victoria live streaming services and our very own SMFC TV media team, just as we have done for the past decade.

Further to this, SMFC will be holding its own members forum in June once the second phase of restrictions are lifted and an appropriate number of members are allowed to be seated in the 1959 Bar and Grill.

As a club, our intention is to resume training over the next week, with our Senior Men’s team to start on the weekend and our Senior Women’s and juniors to follow in the coming weeks. The club will continue to keep up its correspondence with all of our key stakeholders over the next few weeks as football returns.

    Yours in Football

    Nicholas Maikousis
    SMFC President

  • Kat Goff joins South for 2020

Kat Goff joins South for 2020

South Melbourne FC is delighted to confirm that Katherine Goff has joined the club for the 2020 NPLW Victoria season.

Kat joins the club from a successful 2019 season at Alamein, with the winger returning to the club that she called home during the 2015 WPL season. In 27 matches this season, Kat scored on 8 occasions and was responsible for a dozen assists of her own.

Most recently, Kat’s outstanding form saw her selected for the Melbourne City squad for the 2019/20 W-League season.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Senior Coach Samuel Young was excited to bring Kat on board for 2020. “Kat is one the most exciting players to watch in NPLW. Her development from playing state league football to earning herself a W-League position shows how driven and determined she is to succeed. No player in the country can match her speed and explosive pace and we are delighted she has chosen South Melbourne FC to continue her journey to the top.”

Goff was equally excited to be re-joining the club. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play under Sam and alongside such a talented and professional group of women. I knew that I wanted to be challenged in 2020, and I’m excited to continue kicking goals at South Melbourne.” We look forward to seeing Kat link up with the squad in January as we prepare for the 2020 season.
