Sunday’s encounter between South Melbourne and the Essendon Royals looms as a six pointer for both sides.

Essendon hasn’t managed a win in 5 matches whilst South’s past two games, which have yielded defeat, have been characterized by poor performances.

South continues to struggle defensively with the losses of Steven O’Dor and Dino Djulbic to the A-League, having failed to be convincingly covered.

To further deepen South’s defensive troubles, defensive colossus Arthur Tsonis tore his meniscus last week against Richmond and is expected to miss at least four weeks.

Coach John Anastasiadis will now have to seriously consider drafting the experienced Tansel Baser into a central defensive role with South down to the inexperienced Frank Drakopoulos as their last recognized centre-back.

Leading scorer Ricky Diaco and Brazilian maestro Fernando Moraes are a chance to return from niggling injuries which have hampered the duo throughout the season.

With both players missing a full game last week after nursing injuries against Heidelberg, not having two of the most dangerous attacking players in the competition has seen South uncharacteristically not score for the past two matches.

Five weeks ago Essendon were the surprise packet of the competition, sitting in the top half of the top six and looking a good chance for finals football. Fast forward five weeks and the Royals are a loss away from being dragged into a relegation dog-fight.

Conversely, South needs a win to regain their top-six status with the most concerning aspect of the past two weeks being the team’s inability to find their usual fluent and assertive game. Instead, the players have seem somewhat lost and lacking in motivation, something which must be corrected as soon as possible if the Champions are serious of defending their crown.

Essendon’s squad is comprised of many serviceable Premier League players such as ex-South Melbourne defender Con Anthopoulos who is consistently solid in defence. Attacking midfielder Frankie Lagana has been the inspiration for the Royals this season with his seven goals from midfield seeing the ex-Empoli player lead the Essendon goal-scoring charts.

Furthermore, Michael Catalano has also had a superb season from a goal-scoring perspective, adding 6 goals, with South having to be mindful of his goal-getting ability.

South Melbourne has fallen to a second defeat in a row, after being trumped by the determined Richmond Eagles in a scrappy affair on a cold Friday night at Bob Jane Stadium.

South were without Ricky Diaco and Fernando, who both were forced out by leg injuries, while John Anastasiadis responded to the Heidelberg defeat the previous week by sending Sam DeVito and Bill Natsioulas to the substitutes bench. Veteran Arthur Tsonis and newcomer Frank Drakopoulos, who was making his first start in a South Melbourne shirt, replaced them. Mitchell Langerak was once again given the nod as first choice keeper, while joining Tsonis and Drakopoulos in defence were Ramazan and Adam Van Dommele.

The midfield was made up of ex-Heidelberg winger Yusef Yusef, Trent Waterson and youngster Jose Vasquez. Joining the young trio was the experienced Tansel Baser, who despite a niggling injury made yet another start for the club in the defensive midfield position. Up front, Gianni DeNittis returned from a groin injury to partner Nathan Caldwell, who without Diaco, needed to step up if South were going to take the points.

South began the game in a positive manner, threatening the Richmond goal in the 3rd minute, when a sublime run by Trent Waterson saw the quick midfielder dart past a host of Richmond defenders on the right hand flank before whipping in an inch-perfect ball onto the head of Nathan Caldwell. However Caldwell, who was in great position, launched a fairly tame header onto the target and into the arms of the waiting Stuart Webster.

South continued to push forward in the 14th minute, when Vasquez launched a strong drive onto the target from well outside the area. Unfortunately, his shot was directed straight into the arms of Webster, who made another routine save.

In the 31st minute, Richmond went a goal ahead, when former A-League player Henry Fa’arodo turned the South defence inside out on the right hand side of the area, before whipping in a low floating ball inside the six yard area. To the disbelief of the South contingent, Langerak came out to catch the ball low to the ground, but in an unfortunate incident for the Young Socceroo, the ball slipped through his arms and legs and straight into the path of the waiting Steve Burton, who tapped the ball into the open net from only one yard out.

South had their best chance of the half just before the interval, when an inventive and curling strike by Yusef from 20 metres struck the cross-bar.

The second half was a somewhat frustrating half of football to watch, with Richmond intent on defending their lead and South lacking the spark to get themselves back into the contest.

The first real chance of the half fell to Richmond, who through the dangerous Fa’arodo hit a long range effort past the outside of the post.

South didn’t really look like doing anything in an attacking sense until Natsioulas came on late in the second half. In the 73rd minute, Natsioulas linked up well with Waterson outside the area and after a string of passes struck a blistering strike onto the target and into the arms of Webster.

South continued to push forward and had a final chance to snatch a point in injury time. After some good lead up work by Andrew Bourakis, a cross into the area saw Caldwell rise for a header. Unfortunately for South, the header was tipped over the bar by Webster and South were condemned to their second straight defeat.

South Melbourne must now re-group by next Sunday when they host the Essendon Royals at 4.30pm.

South Melbourne returns to Bob Jane Stadium this Friday night looking to recover from last week’s disastrous 3-nil loss to Heidelberg United.

South has slipped to fifth position but can jump to as high as third with a win against the Eagles.

Richmond’s form has been patchy of late with the Doug Hodgson coached outfit winning only one of their past four matches.

The arrival of Hodgson who replaced now Adelaide United assistant Coach Phil Stubbins coincided with an influx of new players at Richmond. Ex-South Melbourne striker Jesse Krncevic , who has scored three times in four games, experienced Premier League goalkeeper Stuart Webster who arrived from Oakleigh and ex-South Melbourne midfielder Yanni Galanos were signed and immediately integrated into the starting eleven.

Hodgson can also rely on one of the league’s fastest and most potent forwards in Henry Fa’arodo. Fa’arodo has scored five times this season with his pace and excellent ball control always causing South problems.

In the South camp Coach John Anastasiadis has a big job in front of him lifting his players after their very poor showing last week at Olympic Village, a game in which few or no positives came from the Albert Park-based club.

Anastasidis will also no doubt have to re-think his defensive setup with South’s three man defence which saw Sam DeVito play out of position as a centre back grossly exposed by a determined Bergers outfit.

With players like Arthur Tsonis proven in the central defensive role as well as the versatility of Tansel Baser who can also play quite well in the heart of defence, not to mention the sheer physicality of Frank Drakopoulos, Anastasiadis isn’t short of defensive cover.

However, it must be noted that South have also been managing quite a few niggles. Vasilios Natsioulas has been battling a hamstring injury for a couple of weeks, Brazilian maestro Fernando Moraes has been restricted by a sore ankle with South top-scorer Ricky Diaco in the same boat whilst the inspirational Baser has also been playing with groin problems.

Youngsters Gianni De Nittis and Nick Curtis are still overcoming knee and muscle related injuries respectively with De Nittis’s ability to score goals and Curtis’s work ethic in the centre of the park being greatly missed.

To get a positive result, South will have to make sure they operate effectively in defence whilst making sure the midfield battle leans in their favour. Against the Bergers, South were smashed in the centre of the park and as a result, the defence was massively exposed.

A goal by Nick Marinos and a Jim Drossos double has seen Heidelberg United trounce Champions South Melbourne by 3 goals to nil in the 16th round of the Foxtel Cup.

In what was one of South’s worst performances since re-entering the Victorian Premier League, a goal by Nick Marinos after only four minutes and a 2nd goal four minutes later by Jim Drossos meant that South were chasing the game from the onset.

Drossos rounded off the scoring, finishing a well worked move by the Bergers in the 73rd minute to match the 3-0 hammering South received at the hands of Kingston City last season.

South had to re-jig its formation with the departure of Steven O’Dor to the Wellington Phoenix, choosing to play Sam DeVito in an unfamiliar central defensive role. DeVito was joined in an unfamiliar back three by Ramazan Tavsancioglu who played on the right side of defence and new recruit Adam Van Dommele who played on the left.

In the centre of the park, Coach John Anastasiadis deployed youngster Jose Vasquez along with veteran Tansel Baser in defensive midfield roles with Vasilios Natsioulas used in the attacking midfield role. Out wide, Yusef Yusef patrolled the left wing whilst Trent Waterson was on the right. The familiar striking duo of Nathan Caldwell and Ricky Diaco made up the frontline for the visitors with Young Socceroo Mitchell Langerak starting his fourth consecutive game in goal.

The match had barely started when South were placed on the back foot. Speedy forward Nick Marinos was on hand to convert a goal mouth scramble in the 4th minute after Bergers midfielder/assistant Coach Andy Vlahos created the chance with some quality lead-up work.

Four minutes later, Marinos’s cross-shot wasn’t convincingly saved by Langerak with the rebound falling to Drossos who from the edge of the box, drove home the rebound to give the Bergers a commanding two goal advantage.

South then settled with the Bergers no doubt happy to soak up some time and look to catch South on the counter.

The visitors had a great chance to pull one back after 21 minutes when after the Bergers headed off the line, South managed to smash a centre across the heart of the Heidelberg area with Nastioulas almost managing to steer a flick header on goal. Unfortunately for South, Natsioulas couldn’t direct his reflex effort on target and the chance was lost.

An error from Bergers custodian Pasi Schwalger nearly saw South score after a Diaco free-kick from 25 or so yards in the 29th minute, bounced in front of Schwalger who failed to cleanly glove with the South follow-up effort seeing a desperate Berger defence do enough to force a corner.

The second half started with Caldwell heading a decent – 47th minute – ball from the right straight at Schwalger.

South’s defense was then horribly exposed when in the 51st minute Marinos found some space down the left flank with DeVito in front of him. The Bergers’ striker did superbly well to skip past DeVito only to see his angled strike cannon off the far post when it seemed destined for the bottom corner.

Heidelberg wasted another great chance on 57 minutes when Erhan Karahan exposed the South midfield and defence after being released by a superb through-ball from defence with only Langerak to beat. To his credit Langerak did well to close the angle Karahan had to work with, but truth be told, Karahan didn’t appear confident and spurned his chance, failing to hit the target.

Heidelberg were by now bossing proceedings and should’ve added a third on 67 minutes after great work down the right by Vlahos saw his cutback find Marinos free in the heart of the South box. Fortunately for South, the diminutive striker failed to connect cleanly with his effort, allowing Langerak to glove comfortably down low.

The triumphant and deserved third goal for the Bergers arrived after 72 minutes when Vlahos again produced a quality piece of play down the right flank sending a looping ball to the back post that was met by Drossos who hit a low volley from 10 or so yards out, straight under Langerak for his third of the season.

Vlahos had deserved a goal and should’ve got one on 79 minutes when he failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity with Langerak again doing well to put added pressure on the finish.

A disappointing South display nearly ended with a goal when in he 81st minute an angled Caldwell header that had Schwalger beaten narrowly missed the right upright, whilst in the 87th minute, the ball fell fortunately for Diaco on the edge of the Heidelberg box with the South striker failing to hit the target with a venomous strike.

Coach John Anastasiadis will no doubt be greatly disappointed with South’s performance and may make a few personnel and positional changes for next week’s encounter against Richmond.

South seemed lackluster and generally not up to it today with perhaps their three-game-in-a week schedule severely affecting performance.

South Melbourne travels to Olympic Village on Sunday coming up against perennial rival Heidelberg United.

The Bergers have been going through a rough patch having not won for a month and having a match abandoned for floodlight failure. As a result, Ioannis Katsakis’s men see themselves sitting in 11th position, dangerously near the relegation zone and in desperate need of a win.

Conversely, three consecutive wins for South Melbourne sees John Anastasiadis’s men in third place with a win no doubt solidifying their position in the top six and helping push for a top two birth.

Sunday’s match serves as the last one for inspirational young defender Steven O’Dor who links up with A-League club the Wellington Phoenix after the encounter.

O’Dor has been a fine servant of the club over the past three seasons and has developed into a quality centre-back with a massive future ahead.

Recent poor form aside, the Bergers posses some of the best attacking talent in the league. Player like Nikola Sabljak, Andy Vlahos, Nick Marinos and Sydney FC recruit Luka Glavas all know how to find the back of the net and have all played at National League level.

Players like Pasi Schwalger, Anthony Ouliaris, Jim Drossos and Daniel Jones are all proven Premier League players and round off quite an impressive and experienced lineup.

In the South camp, niggling injuries are being managed by Vasilios Natsioulas, Ricky Diaco, Tansel Baser and Adam Van Dommele with Natsioulas and Baser having played a half or so against the Victory midweek, they may struggle to pull up for Sunday. Young midfielder Nick Curtis is still 2-3 weeks away form returning.

A pleasing aspect of South’s recent run of good form has been the non-reliance on last season’s best and fairest Fernando Moraes. The Brazilian maestro has been struggling for form as of late but the emergence of Vasilios Natsioulas in an attacking central midfield role has helped ease South’s concern in this area. That said, the prospect of a return to form for Moraes can only bode well for South who even without Moraes in sublime form are the league’s top scoring team.

In the opening fixture of the season both sides played an entertaining three-all draw with South conceding three very poor goals. The arrival of young Socceroo goalkeeperMitch Langerak has brought a heightened level of confidence to the South defence with the young shop stopper showing a level of maturity beyond his 18 years.

Langerak combined with the gradual emergence of young midfielder Jose Vasquez have added an extra layer of depth and quality to South’s squad at the right time of the season.

The Melbourne Victory has comprehensively beaten a vastly weakened South Melbourne outfit by 5 goals to 1.

South sent out a side without first team regulars Ramazan Tavsancioglu, Gianni DeNittis, Ricky Diaco, Nick Curtis, Adam VanDommele, Fernando Moraes and with emerging youngster Jose Vasquez starting on the bench.

Players like Andrew Bourakis, and Frank Drakopoulos who have hardly featured all season where given a chance to get some playing time under their belts against high quality opposition.

South’s starting lineup read as follows. Mitchell Langerak started in goals with Frank Drakopoulos and Steven O’Dor the central defensive pairing whilst Arthur Tsonis and Sam DeVito played at left and right back respectively. In the centre of the park Tansel Baser played in his customary defensive midfield position with Andrew Bourakis the attacking midfielder. Trent Waterson and Yusef Yusef played on the right and left flanks with the front pairing consisting of Vasilios Natsioulas and Nathan Caldwell.

It had been speculated that the Victory would send out a vastly weakened side for this encounter, focusing on trialing some youngsters, but the squad they sent out and kept on the pitch for at least 60 minutes was anything but under strength. Perhaps coach Ernie Merrick was unsure of the lineup South were going to send out and as such was keen to sure up a positive result.

South started extremely shakily with Sam DeVito being exposed down the left flank by Adrian Caceres. The ex-Perth Glory player had an angled strike trickle wide within a minute of the start of play after capitalizing on DeVito’s lack of conviction.

South failed to learn their lesson when in the 12th minute, an error down the left flank allowed Caceres to waltz unmarked into the South box and send an angled drive past the fully stretched Langerak who had no chance of keeping the well-placed strike out, Caceres took his goal well and highlighted how at a higher level, defensive lapses are usually heavily punished.

Bourakis then tested Victory keeper Eugene Galekovic on 15 minutes with a decent free kick that whilst headed for the top corner, was comfortably saved by the ex-South keeper who was well positioned.

South should’ve drawn level on 17 minutes after a Tsonis free kick from the right flank found a totally unmarked Yusef on the back post. Unfortunately for South the silky winger headed over, failing to work Galekovic when at the very least he should’ve forced a save.

Victory went two ahead in the 33rd minute after another defensive error from South saw the home side fail to clear a centre from the right flank with the ever lurking Archie Thompson comfortably side footing past Langerak with a first time effort. Thompson’s goal however did contain a suspicion of offside.

The visitors nearly added a third on 37 minutes when Daniel Allsopp was released down the right hand side of the South box with only Langerak to beat. Allsopp fired a venomous drive that Langerak did superbly well to hold onto.

After 38 minutes, South scored what is hoped to be the first of many goals against the Victory. Yusef found some space down the left side of the Victory box and sent in a low and deadly cross that was nearly steered home by Tansel Baser who saw his point blank effort well saved by Galekovic, only for striker Nathan Caldwell to pounce on the rebound and bundle the ball over the line.

In the 2nd half Coach Anastasiadis further experimented with his side, taking off Tansel Baser at half time and Vasilios Natsioulas soon after whilst bringing on three youngsters from the South youth team who have yet to taste any senior experience.

Archie Thompson set Bob Jane Stadium alight after 52 minutes when a superb individual dribble saw him take the ball from well outside the South area, dribble past 3 South defenders as well as rounding keeper Langerak to tuck home a superb individual goal.

The game resumed with Nathan Caldwell nearly adding a 2nd goal to his tally on 55 minutes when the defence seemed to open up in front of him as he surged forward. Natsioulas had broken off well down the right but Caldwell chose to ignore his run and fired a decent effort just over the crossbar.

On 59 minutes Victory added a fourth. Former South player Daniel Allsopp found some space down the right hand side of the South box. His stinging drive was well saved by Langerak but Allsopp reacted superbly to send the rebound looping over Langerak with an instinctive lunging header.

The sting from the game well and truly phased out in the last 30 minutes with Coach Anastasiadis sending on players from the youth squad for their first ever taste of senior action.

Victory however were not done, VIS youngster Alex Tabor latched onto a superb delivery from a free kick from the left in the 82nd minute with his glancing header leaving Langerak with no chance and rounding off a convincing 5-1 win for the visitors.

This Wednesday night South Melbourne entertains 2007 A-League winners the Melbourne Victory.

A big crowd is expected at Bob Jane Stadium for the first meeting of Victoria’s Premier clubs.

The Victory has been playing Premier League competition over the past two weeks to help prepare them for the third season of the A-League.

Two weeks ago they narrowly defeated Richmond 0-1, whilst last Wednesday night they were pushed all the way in eventually defeating the Oakleigh Cannons by two goals to three.

The Victory has been using these matches to integrate new signings such as Englishman Joe Keenan and Socceroo Ljubo Milicevic, whilst also giving playing time to potential young signings such as Daniel Visevic and Cameron Watson.

That said, Ernie Merrick has been sending out all his available players in search of match fitness and sharpness, so South can well expect to face a near-full strength Melbourne Victory side come Wednesday evening.

Conversely, Victorian Champions South Melbourne have recently hit a solid run of results, recording three straight wins to move into third place in the Foxtel Cup whilst failing to hit top gear.

John Anastasiadis’s men will no doubt be eager to show their abilities against the A-League Champions, but with a crucial game on the weekend against bitter rivals Hedeilberg United, as well as having to manage quite a few injury concerns, South are unlikely to field anywhere near their strongest side for the contest.

Important players such as Vasilios Natsioulas, Tansel Baser and emerging youngster Jose Vasquez have all been playing with muscle injuries and with Sunday’s derby looming, may be rested whilst new defensive recruit Adam Van Dommele is still recovering from an ankle injury.

Wednesday’s encounter will serve as somewhat of a reunion for both sets of players with Melbourne Victory players Kevin Muscat, Daniel Allsopp, Michael Theoklitos and Eugene Galekovic all having played for South Melbourne during their careers.

Furthermore, South players such as Ricky Diaco and Ramazan Tavsancioglu played for the Victory during the inaugural A-League season whilst young goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak is currently on loan at South from the Victory. Wellington Phoenix recruit and South defender Steven O’Dor has trained with Ernie Merrick’s men in the past as has silky winger/striker Yusef Yusef.

With the Victory the leading scorers in the last year’s A-League season and South Melbourne currently the premier attacking team in the Foxtel Cup, attending supporters will no doubt be in for an entertaining encounter.

South Melbourne have continued their undefeated run by extending their winning streak to three games and overcoming a determined Sunshine side at a wet, windy and freezing Chaplin Reserve on Sunday.

Sunshine who were without inspirational midfielder Jonas Salley through his departure to Adelaide United in the A-League, fielded a reasonably strong side where they started with veteran Martin John in goals.
John pre-game was seen as being the man to try and stifle any attacking foray that South would have on goal due to his exceptional run of late and experience in recent times.

Anthony Magnacca and Alfonzo Opazo were also two players in the lineup that needed to step up and control play in a manner that ensured that their side had every opportunity to take the points.

South commenced the game with highly rated youngster Jose Vasquez replacing Fernando in the center of the park, while Ramazan and Adam Van Dommele were missing due to succumbing to injuries during the week.

As the game commenced, South came out of the blocks in blistering touch, attacking from the opening possession of the game when a inventive run by Ricky Diaco culminated in the silky striker hitting a long range effort wide.

South were once again close to finding the target in only the 3rd minute, when Yusef Yusef was played into space on the left hand side of the park with the Sunshine defence seemingly allowing for the unmarked winger to take a touch and hit a brilliant cross into Tansel Baser inside the six yard box.
Baser, who was also unmarked, hit his header into the alert John, who made a great save to his left hand side.

John once again came to rescue once again in 7th minute, where Nathan Caldwell exposed a tentative defense by initially running past a number of players as if they weren’t there.
With a shot finally coming, Caldwell’s drive was hit directly into the arms of John, who looked the only man capable of stopping the South attack at this early stage of the game.

The acrobatic John once again denied Caldwell in the 9th minute, when another ball was played by into the striker who once again was in acres of space.
Although his well-struck attempt was hit well onto the target, John picked the shot off and turned the ball away for a corner.

South were rewarded for their dominance in the 15th minute, when the Georgies defence once again left Yusef unmarked just outside the area.
On this occasion the flashy winger took a touch and burst to just outside the area, smashing a low left foot drive past the unlucky John to give his side a one-goal advantage.

Diaco, who had been quite lively in the early stages of proceedings, almost doubled his side’s advantage two minutes later, when his blistering and intuitive effort was deflected inches wide of the target.

To the Georgies credit they rallied in the second part of the opening half and through Magnacca and Opazo they had two strikes hit well onto the target from well outside the area.
Unfortunately for them, each attempt to be safely and comfortably caught by Mitchell Langerak in the South goal.

Magnacca continued to push forward at every opportunity and should of done better with a half chance he had just before half time, after he skied an effort from just inside the area.
Had taken a touch rather than hit it first time, he could of steadied and made it much easier to hit the target given the conditions.

The second half continued in the exact same manner as the first did, with South attacking from outset in an attempt to try and double their advantage..

In the 52nd minute that looked to be the case when John parried a long-range effort by Diaco into the path of Bill Natsioulas, who seemingly tucked away the chance without any real trouble.
Luckily for the Sunshine side, the referee had his flag raised for offside and hence the goal was disallowed.

Although dodging a bullet previously, the Georgies were on the end of the other side of the referee’s decision on this occasion, when a ball from the right hand side by Natsioulas was handled in the area by Matthew Cini.
Referee Perry Mur subsequently pointed to the penalty spot to the dismay of the home support.
From the resultant penalty, Diaco squeezed the ball past the outstretched and somewhat unlucky John, who despite conceding the goal he had managed to get a hand onto the ball before crossing the line.

Sunshine coach John Markovski, who was nothing but frustrated with his side from the sidelines, attempted to try and spark his side into action, by substituting himself into the game in the 68th minute of play.

The former NSL star made an immediate impact setting up an effort by Opazo, which was hit wide but signaled that Sunshine perhaps were capable of pulling a goal back.

Markovski continued to reap havoc up front for the Georgies, with the South defence nowhere to be seen as the big striker hit a great strike into the diving Langerak.
From the resultant rebound, Langerak made the save of the contest when Markovski stuck a lethal left foot volley onto the target, with the Young Socceroo able to somehow turn the ball over the crossbar and away for a goal kick.

Langerak continued a sublime five minutes when he then turned a goal bound free kick by Opazo amazingly away for a corner, when the ball looking like it was going to find the top left hand corner of the net.

South had one final chance to score late in the game when Natsioulas burst into the area only for his goal bound shot to be turned away by keeper John, who had played a great game in the Sunshine goals.

Sunshine must now regroup as they host the Essendon Royals next Sunday at Chaplin Reserve, in what shapes up as a must win contest for both clubs.

On the other hand, South Melbourne look forward to two massive games in the next 7 days, hosting the Melbourne Victory on Wednesday night at Bob Jane Stadium, whilst having to also travel next weekend to Olympic Village to face arch rivals Heidelberg United.
