Match Preview – Green Gully vs South Melbourne FC

South Melbourne FC will be looking to finally secure a win at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday when Vaughan Coveny’s side travel to Keilor to face Green Gully. A win will see South overtake Gully and secure a position in the top five, whilst a loss could see South slide as far down as tenth on the VPL ladder.

South will head into the game brimming with confidence having secured a hard-fought but thoroughly deserved 0-1 victory against the Bentleigh Greens last Friday night. Fernando De Moraes’ winning goal put the midfielder level with David Gorrie in tenth position on South’s all-time highest goal scorers in League competition, with both players having scored 44 times in Victorian League competition. The Futsalroo will be hoping to score his tenth goal of the season on Saturday not only in order to claim tenth place outright over Gorrie, but to also give South the best chance possible to secure the three points.

Green Gully will be a difficult opponent to overcome on Saturday, with the Cavaliers having not lost to South at home for nearly 24 years. The last time South beat Green Gully at Green Gully Reserve was on 8 September 1986, when goals from Bobby Russell and Manny Anezakis secured a 0-2 win for the away side. Since that day, South had failed to score at Green Gully Reserve until a De Moraes penalty and Gianni De Nittis’ late volley broke the drought in the controversial 2-2 draw on 18 April 2009.

In the last match played between the two sides (21 March 2010), two expertly taken goals by De Moraes and heroic goalkeeping by Peter Zois secured South a 2-1 victory at Lakeside Stadium. Green Gully has constantly been an extremely difficult opponent to face since the two sides resumed hostilities in 2005 and Saturday’s match against them will be no different.

Saturday’s match kicks off at 3pm at Green Gully Reserve.

    Fernando-De-Moraes

South Melbourne FC has returned to winning ways after recording a 0-1 win against the Bentleigh Greens in wet and cold conditions in a VPL catch-up match at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Friday night. Fernando De Moraes’ late winning goal proved to be the difference between the two sides and at the same time cemented the midfielder into the history books at South Melbourne.

Both sides had limited chances to open the scoring in the first half. Early in the game, Dean Piemonte’s 25 yard goal-bound effort was tipped over the bar by South goalkeeper Peter Zois and the Greens also hit the post before their goalkeeper Damir Salcin made a great save to deny Daniel Vasilevski, who had shot from the edge of the area. South suffered an injury scare just before the halftime break when inspirational centre-half Steven O’Dor hobbled off the ground and was replaced by the ever-reliable Eddie Cetkin.

The heavens opened in the second half, with driving rain making smooth free-flowing football difficult to implement. South created several half-chances to open the scoring but a combination of poor finishing and the slippery conditions kept the scoreline at 0-0. Despite creating a few nervous moments, the South defence kept Bentleigh relatively quiet throughout the half and Zois will be most pleased in earning his fourth clean sheet of the season.

The winning goal arrived five minutes from the end, when De Moraes pounced on the ball on the left side of the penalty area and sent a curling effort beyond Salcin into the top corner of the goal. The goal entered De Moraes into South Melbourne FC history by putting him equal tenth with David Gorrie (on 44 goals each) in South’s all-time leading goalscorers in League competition, a phenomenal effort considering his midfield position and that he still has several seasons ahead of him to move higher up the list. The goal also took De Moraes’ individual tally this season to 9 goals, four clear of second-placed Gianni De Nittis.

South should have had a second goal via a Bentleigh own goal only a minute after De Moraes opened the scoring. Some clever moment on the right by South culminated in a low, hard cross to the back post that saw Bentleigh’s Craig Smart’s attempted clearance somehow bounce off the back post and roll across the goal line before eventually being cleared by the Greens defence. The full-time whistle was blown shortly after and South were back to winning form after the surprise loss to Northcote City last Sunday.

The three points means that South has jumped three places on the League ladder to sit in sixth position, one point off the top five and with a game in hand still to play. Next Saturday, South Melbourne FC travel to Green Gully Reserve to take on Green Gully in a match that could see the club make significant inroads into the top five.

It will be crunch time for South Melbourne FC when they travel to Kingston Heath Soccer Complex to face the Bentleigh Greens in a catch-up match this Friday night. The result is crucial for South due to the VPL ladder being so tight currently. A win for South will put the side into sixth position and only one point behind fifth-placed Green Gully, whereas a loss will keep the club only one point off the Melbourne Knights and Heidelberg who are in the relegation zone.

After the highs of the RHB Singapore Cup success, South was quickly brought back to reality last Sunday when Northcote City came from a goal down to win 3-2 at John Cain Memorial Park. Coach Vaughan Coveny was fuming at his side’s defensive lapses and inability to convert many good goal scoring opportunities up forward, and will have drummed this message through to his players at training during this week. Despite the result against Northcote, all is not lost yet as South can still make significant inroads into the top five if the side can win its two catch-up games, beginning with Friday night’s game against Bentleigh.

Bentleigh will be a difficult opponent and have already caused South grief twice so far in 2010. In the Hellenic Cup final in the pre-season, the Greens battled to earn a 0-0 draw with South over 90 minutes plus extra time. In the penalty shoot-out, South had two opportunities to win the Hellenic Cup but Bentleigh’s goalkeeper Peter Gavalas stood firm and the Greens ended up winning the shoot-out. To make matters worse, only weeks later (in round two of the League season) South failed to hold onto a 1-0 lead earned late in the match and as a result the Greens snatched an equalising goal to ensure the match finished in a 1-1 draw.

The match kicks off at 8:30pm this Friday night at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.

Northcote City sent South Melbourne FC crashing back to reality by beating the RHB Singapore Cup Quarter Finalists 3-2 at John Cain Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon. The result has sent Northcote into the top five and keeps South near the bottom of the table, however South still have two games in hand due to participating in the RHB Singapore Cup last week.

South dictated the game early and opened the scoring through Fernando De Moraes in the 24th minute. The Futsalroo was put through on goal and he cleverly rounded Northcote goalkeeper Chris Petropoulos before slotting the ball into the back of the net. The goal re-iterated Fernando’s value to the team, as despite missing the trip to Singapore he was still able to slot back into the senior side and score to extend his lead in the club’s golden boot tally.

Northcote had been dangerous on the counter-attack and had given the South defence plenty of headaches throughout the first half. Their persistence finally paid off ten minutes before halftime when captain Trent Rixon made the South defence pay for failing to clear the ball properly. Rixon blasted in the equalising goal despite goalkeeper Peter Zois’ best efforts to keep the ball out.

The game broke open in the second half, with two goals in a frantic two minutes early on setting the scene for a big finish. Ten minutes into the half, South captain Rama Tavsancioglu conceded a free kick on the edge of the area and Mark McGough sent the Northcote supporters wild with a stunning free kick that soared into the top corner of the net. From the kick-off, South promptly went down the field and leveled when Kyle Joryeff, in his League debut for the club, out-jumped his marker at the back post and headed the ball past Petropoulos to open his scoring account for his new club.

Both teams were now going for the three points, with South enjoying plenty of possession and with Northcote playing a very smart counter-attacking game. With twenty minutes to go, the game was set up for someone to be a hero for their club and that person was Bradley Norton, who received the ball on the left side and fired the ball home to put Northcote in prime position to win the three points. The goal shattered the South players, who until that stage had been looking good to score a third themselves.

There was still time though for South to salvage a draw, and before Norton’s goal coach Vaughan Coveny had already thrown Joe Keenan and Hamid Basma on to try and score. Coveny then introduced Gianni De Nittis to the game, and he combined with the other substitutes to create plenty of chances but for no reward. De Nittis had the best of the chances when he got on the receiving end of a cross but he could only direct his header straight at Petropoulos and the Northcote custodian did an excellent job in keeping the ball out.

South plays the first of its two catch-up matches on Friday night at 8:30pm when the side travels to Kingston Heath Soccer Complex to meet the Bentleigh Greens.

FINAL SCORE: SOUTH MELBOURNE 2-3 NORTHCOTE CITY (HT: 1-1)

Match Preview: South Melbourne FC vs Northcote City

    By John Kyrou

It is back to reality this weekend as South Melbourne FC returns to Victorian Premier League action for the first time in three weeks by entering into a derby against sister club Northcote City at John Cain Memorial Park. Three points is crucial for South as it could potentially see the side climb back into the top five with two catch-up games still to play as well.

South enters the game in excellent form having won its last two games. South beat Sunshine George Cross 3-1 before traveling to Singapore and defeating Gombak United 2-1 in their RHB Singapore Cup first round match. The challenge this week for the coaching staff in Vaughan Coveny and Joe Montemurro has been to ensure that the players quickly re-adjust from Singapore’s humidity to Melbourne’s winter conditions in order to be ready for Sunday’s match.

Kyle Joryeff and Hamid Basma both made their South debuts in Singapore and both players will be pressing for selection this Sunday in order to make their League debuts for the club. These signings have given the coaching staff more headaches, firstly because both players impressed in Singapore and secondly because two of the club’s best players in Fernando De Moraes and Joe Keenan did not even travel to Singapore and are therefore fresh and rested.

Northcote has proven this season that they will not be easy to beat, having held South to a 3-3 draw in round three and being 3-1 up during the match. Northcote currently sit in sixth position on the ladder, one point ahead of a South side that has two games in hand. Northcote coach Peter Tsolakis (a former championship player with South) said over summer that he would keep faith in the players that got his side promoted and thus far his squad has proven that they are more than capable of not only staying in the VPL but possibly even being finalists. Undoubtedly the player to watch out for is captain Trent Rixon, who is equal leading goal scorer in the VPL this season and who scored twice against South in round three.

The match kicks off at 3pm on Sunday at John Cain Memorial Park in Northcote. The match is a South Melbourne FC home game despite the fact that the game is being played at Northcote City’s home ground, therefore South Melbourne FC members and sponsors are entitled to the usual privileges that they enjoy at home matches.
