AGM Update

The Annual General Meeting of South Melbourne FC was conducted in a calm and collegiate environment, reflecting the unity and shared commitment across the club.

Proceedings commenced with a minute’s silence in memory of respected South Melbourne identities who recently passed away, Filio Valkanis, Kris Kalafatidis and Marko Fode. This was followed by the presentation of the club’s financials, along with the Presidents’ Report and Football Director’s Report.

In summary, it was noted that a range of financial measures have been implemented to support the expanded senior men’s football program, which now operates across almost 12 months of the year. Internally, a new agreement is set to be executed for the catering and café operations to better protect the club financially. Reference was also made to the recent write-offs of debts owed to Mario Vinaccia, as well as direct financial contributions made by the Presidents. The meeting also acknowledged the significant service of former President Nicholas Maikousis.

An update on recent club activities highlighted the parliamentary reception held for the Australian Championship team, with key sponsors acknowledged including Directed (Steve Siolis), 1300 Plasta, Moray & Agnew Lawyers and Sherridon Homes. The recent visit of Ange Postecoglou to the club was referenced, along with attendances by the Deputy Prime Minister, Sports Minister, Football Australia Chair and CEO, and the Lord Mayor. It was also noted that match day attendances, particularly during the Australian Championship, brought back memories of the strong support seen during the NSL era.

The continued success of the women’s program was proudly highlighted by Female Football Director Theo Chronis, who announced that 25 per cent of the club’s junior girls had been invited to represent Victoria at National Championships. The All-Abilities program led by Nathan McLean was also acknowledged, while Tass Roufos shared the positive news that all junior boys’ NPL age groups will now compete in Division 1.

The meeting also heard a heartfelt reflection from a South Melbourne supporter who attended the recent OFC Pro League matches in Auckland with his 14-year-old son, Oscar. The family spoke of the incredible connection shown by the playing group, who took time after matches to engage with young supporters, including acknowledging and signing a poster Oscar had proudly designed and brought to the game. The gesture left a lasting impression and was praised as a perfect example of the club’s culture, values and the strong bond being built between the team and its supporters.

Long-time member Kim Ferizis received a strong round of applause when addressing the meeting, thanking the Board for their dedication and leadership in driving on-field success. Kim noted:

“It is heartening to see that the hard work of the Board is replicated by success on the field. I am confident that we are on the right track and everyone feels a sense of optimism.”

The meeting concluded with recognition of the continued efforts and commitment of Board members including Steve Kyriazis, Bill Panayiotou, Peter Kokotis, Tony Margaritis, Nathan McLean, Theo Chronis, Tass Roufos, Nicole Jacobs and Mario Vinaccia.

The match began in difficult fashion for Hellas, who fell behind early after an unfortunate defensive error was punished. The setback prompted an immediate response, with Hellas lifting their tempo and control in possession.

The equaliser arrived through Yuki Uchida, who brought Hellas back on level terms to make it 1–1. Momentum continued to build, and Hellas were rewarded again when Uchida was brought down in the penalty area following a collision with Van Dijk. Max Mikkola stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending Hellas into the break with a 2–1 advantage.

The second half proved more challenging, with Hellas struggling to regain rhythm after the restart. Two defensive lapses were punished, allowing the opposition to strike twice and turn the contest on its head, leaving Hellas trailing 3–2.

Refusing to relent, Hellas pushed forward once more and found a crucial equaliser through Jordan Swibel, who made a sharp near-post run to latch onto a dangerous cross from Cocks, finishing clinically to restore parity.

The closing stages were played at high intensity, with both sides searching for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the points were shared.

Hellas now turn their focus to the next challenge, set to face Bula FC on Wednesday as Circuit 2 continues in Port Moresby.

South struck early, opening the scoring inside the first 15 minutes. A Franco Maya back pass fell into the path of Manny Aguek, who showed great composure to bypass Anton Milnaric before rifling the ball into the top corner, giving Hellas the perfect start and igniting the South faithful behind the goal.

Several minutes later, South doubled their advantage. From a Max Mikkola corner, captain Marco Jankovic rose strongly, glancing his header towards the back post and into the net. The skipper celebrated passionately with the travelling supporters, as South took firm control of the contest.

Holding a 2–0 lead at the break, South approached the second half with maturity and discipline. Marconi pushed forward in search of a response, but South remained organised and resolute, limiting clear chances and managing the game expertly as the minutes ticked away.

At full time, South Melbourne secured a 2–0 victory, lifting the inaugural Australian Championship trophy and etching their name into the history books as the competition’s first champions.

The victory caps a remarkable turnaround over the past four months for the club. After a challenging NPL Victoria campaign, South regrouped and delivered when it mattered most, adding the Australian Championship to an already successful year that also included Community Shield and Dockerty Cup triumphs in 2025.

The result is also historically significant, marking South Melbourne’s first national title since the 1998–1999 NSL Championship, ending a 26-year wait for national silverware.

With momentum firmly behind them, South now turn their attention to a new chapter, preparing for the club’s debut in the Oceania Professional League in January, carrying belief, confidence, and the backing of a passionate Blue and White supporter base.

As South Melbourne Hellas enters a new chapter in its proud history, the Club is also evolving its governance structure.

We are pleased to confirm that the Club will now be led by two Co-Presidents, Andrew Mesourouni and Bill Papastergiadis.

With a senior football program now running year-round across three major competitions, the Australian Championship (National Second Tier) beginning in less than two weeks, the FIFA Oceania Professional League in January, and the NPL season commencing soon after, the demands on leadership, player rosters, administrative staff and stadium management have never been greater. This new approach reflects our commitment to meeting these responsibilities at the highest level.

Both Andrew and Bill bring over a decade of service to the Club, having held senior positions including Football Director (Andrew) and Head of Legal and Chairman (Bill). Their experience and dedication will help guide the Club through this exciting era.

Andrew Mesourouni said:
“It’s time. Hellas must truly unite behind the strength of its badge and proud history. For the first time in our history, unity will be on display with two Presidents sharing responsibility alongside a passionate Board of Directors. This is not about any individual but about one Club coming together, members and fans, young and old, united by love and respect for our great Club. Together, we will rise, both in football and in community values, as a home for all.”

Bill Papastergiadis said:
“It is a privilege to serve at this historic Club, whose record of history and success in Australian football is unmatched. We must respect the contributions of all who came before us, including Nick Maikousis. Alongside Andrew, our focus will be to deliver the best possible football product for our supporters. Football in Australia is undergoing significant change, and we want Hellas to be at the forefront of this new era.”

The Board structure otherwise remains unchanged and continues to include Peter Kokotis, Tass Roufos, Tony Margaritis, Mario Vinaccia, Nicole Jacobs, Ashley Maikousis, Theo Chronis, Andrew Mesourouni, Bill Papastergiadis, Bill Panayotou, Steve Kyriazis and Nathan McLean

Fast, direct and a proven goalscorer, Manny has also represented his native South Sudan at international level.
