Smith joins the club after working closely with South Melbourne FC during the club’s recent OFC Professional League campaign.

He relocates to Australia with his family after three successful seasons with New Zealand National League club Bay Olympic FC, where he served as Men’s Premier Head Coach and Senior Technical Director.

Smith brings extensive experience across elite youth development and high-performance football. Prior to Bay Olympic, he was Head Coach at Tauranga City FC and spent four seasons with WaiBOP United in New Zealand’s ASB Premiership.

Throughout his career, Smith has earned a reputation for technical excellence, player development and building high-performance football environments. His appointment further strengthens South Melbourne FC’s football department and reinforces the club’s commitment to continuous improvement across its football programme.

Speaking on his appointment, Smith said:

“I am very excited to be joining such a historic and prestigious club as South Melbourne FC and cannot wait to get started in the role. It has always been my ambition to work alongside quality people in a high-performance football environment.”

Commenting on Smith’s appointment, Youth Football Director Tass Roufos said:

“Throughout the recruitment process, it was important that we identified someone with the technical expertise to support our coaches, strengthen our football methodology and continue driving standards across our football programme. Peter’s professionalism, communication skills, football knowledge and alignment with our football philosophy made him an excellent fit.

South Melbourne FC continues to build an integrated football programme from junior to senior football. Through our participation in the Australian Championship and the OFC Professional League, we are able to provide our players with additional football experiences and development opportunities as they progress through the club.

Peter’s appointment further strengthens the alignment between our junior and senior football departments, ensuring our football philosophy, coaching methodology and player development remain connected across the entire programme.

I would also like to acknowledge the important contribution Goran Stajic has made as Interim Technical Director. Goran has provided strong leadership during this period and will continue to play a key role as Senior Men’s Reserves Coach and as a valued member of our Senior Football Committee, working closely with our Junior Football Department.

Everyone at South Melbourne FC welcomes Peter and his family and looks forward to the contribution he will make to the continued development of the club’s football programme.

South Melbourne Hellas Football Club today announced the appointment of three new Board Directors: the Hon Philip Dalidakis, John Karantzis and Associate Professor Marinis Pirpiris.

The appointments reflect the club’s commitment to strengthening its capabilities in line with its ambitions both on and off the pitch.

The Hon Philip Dalidakis brings to the Board an exceptional record across government, commerce and public policy. A former Victorian Cabinet Minister and C suite executive, he is Managing Partner of Orizontas, a boutique advisory firm working with boards and senior executive teams on complex strategic and reputational challenges.

He currently represents Australia on the APEC Business Advisory Council and holds board positions spanning life sciences, defence and social impact. His experience chairing audit and risk committees and navigating the intersection of politics, media and governance adds a distinctive and immediately valuable dimension to the South Melbourne Board.

John Karantzis is a Partner and Head of Personal Injury Law and Litigation at Carbone Lawyers, with more than 28 years of experience in personal injury law.

Accredited as a Specialist in Personal Injury Law by the Law Institute of Victoria and recognised by Doyle’s Guide as a leading plaintiff lawyer and litigator in Victoria, John brings to the Board rigorous legal judgement, extensive experience managing high stakes disputes and a demonstrated record of advocacy on behalf of individuals.

Associate Professor Marinis Pirpiris is an internationally recognised orthopaedic surgeon, academic and healthcare leader with extensive expertise in robotic joint replacement of the hip and knee, arthritis management and sports injury care.

He is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with appointments at Epworth and Cabrini Hospital and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

Associate Professor Pirpiris holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne and has completed post fellowship training at leading institutions in the United States and United Kingdom. A leader in orthopaedic innovation across Australia, Europe and the Asia Pacific region, he brings to the Board a rigorous analytical mind, deep ties to the medical community and a commitment to player welfare and athlete performance that will serve the club well.

The appointments follow a period of focused Board renewal at South Melbourne Hellas as the club pursues its ambitions to compete for higher honours and advance its longer term strategic objectives.

Co Presidents Bill Papastergiadis and Andrew Mesourouni said all three Directors were selected for the quality of their judgement, the breadth of experience they bring and their genuine connection to the values and history of the club.

Co Presidents Bill Papastergiadis and Andrew Mesourouni:

“Philip, Marinis and John are exactly the kind of people South Melbourne Hellas needs at Board level right now.

“Philip’s record across government, business and the NFP sector gives us a perspective very few clubs can access. John’s legal expertise and track record of fighting for people are qualities that reflect what this club stands for, while Marinis brings the kind of medical and scientific rigour that will make a real difference to how we support our players.

“All three understand what this club means and what it can become. We are genuinely excited to be working alongside them.”

The Hon Philip Dalidakis:

“South Melbourne Hellas is one of this country’s great football clubs, with a proud heritage and a family that cares deeply about where the club is headed.

“I’m excited to join a Board that is serious about continuing to build on the giants of the past and I look forward to contributing wherever I can.”

John Karantzis:

“Hellas has always stood for more than football. It’s a club built on community, resilience and pride, and those are values I’ve tried to bring to my own work throughout my career.

“I’m looking forward to contributing my legal and governance experience to a Board that is thinking seriously about its future.”

Associate Professor Marinis Pirpiris:

“South Melbourne holds a special place in my heart and I’m honoured to join the Board.

“My focus will be on contributing wherever my background in medicine and sports science can add value, whether that’s in player welfare, performance or the club’s broader health and wellbeing agenda.

“The club’s ambitions are clear and I’m proud to be part of what comes next.”

Yoo joins the club from fellow Oceania Professional League side South Island United, bringing with him experience from the international stage. After developing in New Zealand and spending four years in Portugal, Yoo featured for Auckland City at the FIFA Club World Cup, starting against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Boca Juniors, and was part of the side that secured a famous draw against the Argentine giants.

Hellas supporters will already be familiar with Yoo’s quality, with the dynamic forward finding the back of the net against South Melbourne during this year’s Oceania Professional League. Blessed with pace, technical ability and an eye for goal, Yoo adds further depth and attacking versatility as the club prepares for an important run across the Australia Cup, NPL Victoria and Australian Championship.

“We know David’s qualities well, having seen them first hand this season,” Senior Football Director Peter Kokotis said. “He’s a quick, exciting attacking player who can create and score from anywhere on the pitch. We’re delighted to bring him to South Melbourne and believe he’ll be a valuable addition for the challenges ahead.”

South Melbourne FC confirms that Sinisa Cohadzic has been reinstated as Senior Men’s Head Coach.

While the decision to part ways with Cohadzic last week came as a surprise to some, it created an opportunity for both parties to openly address and resolve a number of important matters.

Those discussions were conducted with honesty and professionalism, producing a renewed alignment on the direction of the club with a clear pathway forward for all.

South Melbourne FC and Cohadzic remain united in their shared ambition and commitment to the continued success of the club, the welfare of our players, the love of our fans and the support of our sponsors.

The Club’s focus is now squarely on the season ahead and the standards we demand of ourselves on and off the pitch and that we move forward as one club, fully focused on the season ahead.

Bill Papastergiadis & Andrew Mesourouni, Club Co-Presidents, South Melbourne FC:

“The Board made a decision that resulted in both parties openly addressing and resolving a number of issues which have now led to a renewed alignment and a clear pathway forward for all.

“Now we ask our South Melbourne family to get behind the team, fill the stadium and show the world why this club is like no other.”

Sinisa Cohadzic, Senior Head Coach:
“I love this club. I always have. These past few days have been difficult, but what matters is that we move forward together as one club. I’d like to thank the board for working through all the issues and now i’m ready to get back to work.”

AGM Update

The Annual General Meeting of South Melbourne FC was conducted in a calm and collegiate environment, reflecting the unity and shared commitment across the club.

Proceedings commenced with a minute’s silence in memory of respected South Melbourne identities who recently passed away, Filio Valkanis, Kris Kalafatidis and Marko Fode. This was followed by the presentation of the club’s financials, along with the Presidents’ Report and Football Director’s Report.

In summary, it was noted that a range of financial measures have been implemented to support the expanded senior men’s football program, which now operates across almost 12 months of the year. Internally, a new agreement is set to be executed for the catering and café operations to better protect the club financially. Reference was also made to the recent write-offs of debts owed to Mario Vinaccia, as well as direct financial contributions made by the Presidents. The meeting also acknowledged the significant service of former President Nicholas Maikousis.

An update on recent club activities highlighted the parliamentary reception held for the Australian Championship team, with key sponsors acknowledged including Directed (Steve Siolis), 1300 Plasta, Moray & Agnew Lawyers and Sherridon Homes. The recent visit of Ange Postecoglou to the club was referenced, along with attendances by the Deputy Prime Minister, Sports Minister, Football Australia Chair and CEO, and the Lord Mayor. It was also noted that match day attendances, particularly during the Australian Championship, brought back memories of the strong support seen during the NSL era.

The continued success of the women’s program was proudly highlighted by Female Football Director Theo Chronis, who announced that 25 per cent of the club’s junior girls had been invited to represent Victoria at National Championships. The All-Abilities program led by Nathan McLean was also acknowledged, while Tass Roufos shared the positive news that all junior boys’ NPL age groups will now compete in Division 1.

The meeting also heard a heartfelt reflection from a South Melbourne supporter who attended the recent OFC Pro League matches in Auckland with his 14-year-old son, Oscar. The family spoke of the incredible connection shown by the playing group, who took time after matches to engage with young supporters, including acknowledging and signing a poster Oscar had proudly designed and brought to the game. The gesture left a lasting impression and was praised as a perfect example of the club’s culture, values and the strong bond being built between the team and its supporters.

Long-time member Kim Ferizis received a strong round of applause when addressing the meeting, thanking the Board for their dedication and leadership in driving on-field success. Kim noted:

“It is heartening to see that the hard work of the Board is replicated by success on the field. I am confident that we are on the right track and everyone feels a sense of optimism.”

The meeting concluded with recognition of the continued efforts and commitment of Board members including Steve Kyriazis, Bill Panayiotou, Peter Kokotis, Tony Margaritis, Nathan McLean, Theo Chronis, Tass Roufos, Nicole Jacobs and Mario Vinaccia.

The match began in difficult fashion for Hellas, who fell behind early after an unfortunate defensive error was punished. The setback prompted an immediate response, with Hellas lifting their tempo and control in possession.

The equaliser arrived through Yuki Uchida, who brought Hellas back on level terms to make it 1–1. Momentum continued to build, and Hellas were rewarded again when Uchida was brought down in the penalty area following a collision with Van Dijk. Max Mikkola stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending Hellas into the break with a 2–1 advantage.

The second half proved more challenging, with Hellas struggling to regain rhythm after the restart. Two defensive lapses were punished, allowing the opposition to strike twice and turn the contest on its head, leaving Hellas trailing 3–2.

Refusing to relent, Hellas pushed forward once more and found a crucial equaliser through Jordan Swibel, who made a sharp near-post run to latch onto a dangerous cross from Cocks, finishing clinically to restore parity.

The closing stages were played at high intensity, with both sides searching for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the points were shared.

Hellas now turn their focus to the next challenge, set to face Bula FC on Wednesday as Circuit 2 continues in Port Moresby.
