NPL Junior Girls

South Melbourne FC has now opened Expressions of Interests for their 2020 squads for girls interested in the Under 12, 14, 16 and 19 squads in National Premier Leagues Women’s.

South Melbourne FC teams and coaches have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of competitive formats including Australian and international tours in addition to the NPL season. In recent years our coaches and teams have exposure to the Kanga Cup Canberra, Caruana Cup, AFS Shepparton Tournament and Heritage Youth Cup here in Australia and internationally at the Gothia Cup China and the Bangkok Girls Football cup.

The club has a proud history of developing young girls to achieve and continuously experience excellence and enjoyment in their Football journey.

In 2019 a majority of our youth girls had the opportunity to develop at a more advanced level playing at a high age group. This provides the girls the opportunity to demonstrate their technical ability at a different level but also experience the pace and intensity of playing against older and more experienced players. This year a number of girls from Under 16 squad and a majority of the Under 19 squad trained reguarly with the senior team and experienced playing senior football.

In recent years players from our program have taken their football journey to a higher level including:

  • Transferring to the Football Victoria NTC program and competing at the National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour;
  • Being selected to participate in the Emerging Matildas program in Melbourne;
  • Receiving scholarships to the Future Matilas program in Sydney;
  • Experiencing international competitive football playing for the Junior and Young Matildas teams;
  • Receiving scholarships to US College/University programs;
  • Transferring to play in the USL W-League (2nd tier of USA Womens football); and
  • Receiving contracts and train-on positions with W-League teams including Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.

The club has exlcusive training factilities for our womens/girls football program located in Albert Park including a gymnasium. The squads will from time-to-time train at other venues including Alma Park St Kilda, the Victorian Institute of Sport, Lakeside Stadium and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The club has a partnership with the United Physiotherapy Group who provide support to players during the week at training sessions and offer discounts to players for additional sessions at their clinics. Matches are played at Albert Park and Lakeside Stadium.

The club will not be conducting open trials for squads this year, the process will be by invitation only. All players wishing to be considered are to complete the form below, and a member of our Technical team will be in contact.

All registrations are held in complete confidence, and are not discussed outside the club.

Referee Scholarship

In 2019 South Melbourne FC introduced a development scholarship for its youth girls program. In conjunction with the Football Victoria GO Girls program, the scholarship provided financial assistance for girls to complete the Level 4 Referee Course.

These courses were run in an all-female environment and the program provided girls the opportunity to become referees. The girls have developed their skills in another part of the game thereby enhancing their football journey and introducing the potential to earn money whilst participating in the game at a young age.

Coaching Scholarship

In 2019 South Melbourne FC introduced a development scholarship for its youth girls program. In conjunction with the Football Victoria GO Girls program, the scholarship provided financial assistance for girls to complete the Mini Roos coaching course.

These courses were run in an all-female environment and the program provided girls the opportunity to become coaches and gain their coaching accreditation certificate. The girls have developed their ability in another part of the game thereby enhancing their football journey whilst expanding their leadership, communication and interpersonal skills..

Tours and Tournaments

Each year South Melbourne FC identifies opportunities for its teams to participate in tournaments outside the National Premier League season.

These tournaments may be locally based in metropolitan Melbourne, in regional Victoria, interstate or international. The club facilitates the organisation of squads for these tournaments and depending on the circumstances they may involve a mix of age groups. Club tours are almost exclusively based on competing in a tournament and not simply tours involving training at and visiting different locations. These tours are entirely optional for players and generally take place in school holidays.

Tournament Tours in recent years have included:

  • 2016: Under 14s – Kanga Cup (Canberra, Australia)
  • 2016: Under 19s – 20th Annual Orange Classic Girls Tournament (Tampa, Florida, USA) and Disney Girls Soccer Showcase (Orlando, Florida, USA)
  • 2017: Under 14s – Kanga Cup (Canberra, Australia)
  • 2018: Under 16s – Bangkok Girls Football Cup (Bangkok, Thailand)
  • 2018: Under 14s – Kanga Cup (Canberra, Australia)
  • 2018: Under 14s – AFS Tournament (Shepparton, Australia)
  • 2019: Under 14s – Kanga Cup (Canberra, Australia)

Girls Coaches

The club competes in the National Premier League Womens competitions in Victoria with five participating teams. In conjunction with the South Melbourne Women’s FC, we run a a successful Mini-Roos program for asprining young girls looking to develop their football skills in an elite training environment. We also field teams in the State League for community football.

The club is proud to employ both female and male coaches as part of its coaching program.

South Melbourne FC teams and coaches have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of competitive formats including Australian and international tours. In recent years our coaches and teams have exposure to the Kanga Cup Canberra, Caruana Cup, AFS Shepparton Tournament and Heritage Youth Cup here in Australia and internationally at the Gothia Cup China and the Bangkok Girls Football cup.

The club facilitates unique coaching development opportunities to further extend coaches technical knowledge and skill across the football environment. In 2018 coaches from South Melbourne FC traveled to China to present our player development program to a conference of over 80 local coaches. In 2019 the club provided a scholarship program for young girls to obtain their Mini Roos coaching certificate providing the opportunity for our coaches to mentor the next generation.

Football Victoria has responsibility for managing the development of football coaches in Victoria under the national accreditation program administered by Football Federation Australia. Football Victoria has twelve Coach Developers who are advanced teaching coaches who are engaged independently of clubs specifically to present, teach and run coaches education and assessment programs. The South Melbourne FC coaching team includes two of the twelve Coach Developers engaged by Football Victoria to run their coaches education courses. These are Mick Gallo who is the Senior Women’s coach and Sebastian Sztormowski who is the Technical Director. Both Mick and Sebastian hold FFA B-Licences.

Building on our coach development program, the club is opening Expressions of Interest for 2020 coaching positions as we look to grow our development pathway for both players and coaches.
