South Melbourne capture New Zealand Youth International Luke Adams

South Melbourne FC is delighted to announce the signing of New Zealand youth representative Luke Adams from Waitakere United.

The 20 year old defender who was born in Melbourne and holds an Australian passport, made his debut for his current side at just 15, becoming one of the youngest players to debut in New Zealand’s national football league, the ASB Premiership.

After making his senior debut for Waitakere United, Adams had two spells with English club Birmingham City including a three-match tour of Slovakia with their under-18 side. Whilst trialling with Derby County, Adams sustained a serious knee injury, but did enough to secure a one year contract with the Rams. Released by Derby County a year later, Adams signed with A League outfit Wellington Phoenix, after impressing on trial. In total, Adams played three matches with the Phoenix, but was unable to secure a spot in the starting eleven.

Adams is well recognised for his leadership qualities both on and off the park, with the young defender having captained both New Zealand’s Under 17 and Under 20 sides. Along with SMFC defender James Musa, Adams was called up to the New Zealand National Team in May 2014 for the friendly against South Africa in Auckland.

Speaking to, SMFC Football Director Nicholas Maikousis said “its terrific to have further strengthened our defence with the addition of Luke. With his international experience and leadership qualities, Luke is looking forward to a big year ahead with South Melbourne.

Also speaking to, Luke Adams could not contain his excitement. “I am looking forward to joining such a great club with a big and proud history. I also look forward playing along side a couple of other Kiwis in James Musa and captain Michael Eagar who i have tremendous respect for.”

South Melbourne FC welcomes Luke Adams to the Club and wishes him the best for the upcoming season.
