David Yoo sings for South Melbourne

South Melbourne FC is delighted to announce the signing of Korean-born attacker David Yoo for the remainder of the 2026 season.

Yoo joins the club from fellow Oceania Professional League side South Island United, bringing with him experience from the international stage. After developing in New Zealand and spending four years in Portugal, Yoo featured for Auckland City at the FIFA Club World Cup, starting against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Boca Juniors, and was part of the side that secured a famous draw against the Argentine giants.

Hellas supporters will already be familiar with Yoo’s quality, with the dynamic forward finding the back of the net against South Melbourne during this year’s Oceania Professional League. Blessed with pace, technical ability and an eye for goal, Yoo adds further depth and attacking versatility as the club prepares for an important run across the Australia Cup, NPL Victoria and Australian Championship.

“We know David’s qualities well, having seen them first hand this season,” Senior Football Director Peter Kokotis said. “He’s a quick, exciting attacking player who can create and score from anywhere on the pitch. We’re delighted to bring him to South Melbourne and believe he’ll be a valuable addition for the challenges ahead.”

Steve Issa leads the clubโ€™s commercial activities as Head of Partnerships, overseeing sponsorship and partnership engagement.

    AGM Update

The Annual General Meeting of South Melbourne FC was conducted in a calm and collegiate environment, reflecting the unity and shared commitment across the club.

Proceedings commenced with a minuteโ€™s silence in memory of respected South Melbourne identities who recently passed away, Filio Valkanis, Kris Kalafatidis and Marko Fode. This was followed by the presentation of the clubโ€™s financials, along with the Presidentsโ€™ Report and Football Directorโ€™s Report.

In summary, it was noted that a range of financial measures have been implemented to support the expanded senior menโ€™s football program, which now operates across almost 12 months of the year. Internally, a new agreement is set to be executed for the catering and cafรฉ operations to better protect the club financially. Reference was also made to the recent write-offs of debts owed to Mario Vinaccia, as well as direct financial contributions made by the Presidents. The meeting also acknowledged the significant service of former President Nicholas Maikousis.

An update on recent club activities highlighted the parliamentary reception held for the Australian Championship team, with key sponsors acknowledged including Directed (Steve Siolis), 1300 Plasta, Moray & Agnew Lawyers and Sherridon Homes. The recent visit of Ange Postecoglou to the club was referenced, along with attendances by the Deputy Prime Minister, Sports Minister, Football Australia Chair and CEO, and the Lord Mayor. It was also noted that match day attendances, particularly during the Australian Championship, brought back memories of the strong support seen during the NSL era.

The continued success of the womenโ€™s program was proudly highlighted by Female Football Director Theo Chronis, who announced that 25 per cent of the clubโ€™s junior girls had been invited to represent Victoria at National Championships. The All-Abilities program led by Nathan McLean was also acknowledged, while Tass Roufos shared the positive news that all junior boysโ€™ NPL age groups will now compete in Division 1.

The meeting also heard a heartfelt reflection from a South Melbourne supporter who attended the recent OFC Pro League matches in Auckland with his 14-year-old son, Oscar. The family spoke of the incredible connection shown by the playing group, who took time after matches to engage with young supporters, including acknowledging and signing a poster Oscar had proudly designed and brought to the game. The gesture left a lasting impression and was praised as a perfect example of the clubโ€™s culture, values and the strong bond being built between the team and its supporters.

Long-time member Kim Ferizis received a strong round of applause when addressing the meeting, thanking the Board for their dedication and leadership in driving on-field success. Kim noted:

โ€œIt is heartening to see that the hard work of the Board is replicated by success on the field. I am confident that we are on the right track and everyone feels a sense of optimism.โ€

The meeting concluded with recognition of the continued efforts and commitment of Board members including Steve Kyriazis, Bill Panayiotou, Peter Kokotis, Tony Margaritis, Nathan McLean, Theo Chronis, Tass Roufos, Nicole Jacobs and Mario Vinaccia.

South Melbourne Held in Entertaining Draw in First South Side Derby

Hellas showed character and resilience to secure a point in a dramatic Oceania Professional League encounter, battling back after early setbacks in what marked the competitionโ€™s first South side derby.

The match began in difficult fashion for Hellas, who fell behind early after an unfortunate defensive error was punished. The setback prompted an immediate response, with Hellas lifting their tempo and control in possession.

The equaliser arrived through Yuki Uchida, who brought Hellas back on level terms to make it 1โ€“1. Momentum continued to build, and Hellas were rewarded again when Uchida was brought down in the penalty area following a collision with Van Dijk. Max Mikkola stepped up and calmly converted from the spot, sending Hellas into the break with a 2โ€“1 advantage.

The second half proved more challenging, with Hellas struggling to regain rhythm after the restart. Two defensive lapses were punished, allowing the opposition to strike twice and turn the contest on its head, leaving Hellas trailing 3โ€“2.

Refusing to relent, Hellas pushed forward once more and found a crucial equaliser through Jordan Swibel, who made a sharp near-post run to latch onto a dangerous cross from Cocks, finishing clinically to restore parity.

The closing stages were played at high intensity, with both sides searching for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough as the points were shared.

Hellas now turn their focus to the next challenge, set to face Bula FC on Wednesday as Circuit 2 continues in Port Moresby.

  • South Melbourne crowned inaugural Australian Championship winners

South Melbourne crowned inaugural Australian Championship winners

On Saturday December 6, South Melbourne Hellas took on Marconi Stallions in the final of the Australian Championship, in front of a raucous crowd at Olympic Village as two giants of Australian football met on the national stage.

South struck early, opening the scoring inside the first 15 minutes. A Franco Maya back pass fell into the path of Manny Aguek, who showed great composure to bypass Anton Milnaric before rifling the ball into the top corner, giving Hellas the perfect start and igniting the South faithful behind the goal.

Several minutes later, South doubled their advantage. From a Max Mikkola corner, captain Marco Jankovic rose strongly, glancing his header towards the back post and into the net. The skipper celebrated passionately with the travelling supporters, as South took firm control of the contest.

Holding a 2โ€“0 lead at the break, South approached the second half with maturity and discipline. Marconi pushed forward in search of a response, but South remained organised and resolute, limiting clear chances and managing the game expertly as the minutes ticked away.

At full time, South Melbourne secured a 2โ€“0 victory, lifting the inaugural Australian Championship trophy and etching their name into the history books as the competitionโ€™s first champions.

The victory caps a remarkable turnaround over the past four months for the club. After a challenging NPL Victoria campaign, South regrouped and delivered when it mattered most, adding the Australian Championship to an already successful year that also included Community Shield and Dockerty Cup triumphs in 2025.

The result is also historically significant, marking South Melbourneโ€™s first national title since the 1998โ€“1999 NSL Championship, ending a 26-year wait for national silverware.

With momentum firmly behind them, South now turn their attention to a new chapter, preparing for the clubโ€™s debut in the Oceania Professional League in January, carrying belief, confidence, and the backing of a passionate Blue and White supporter base.

  • South Melbourne FC attends Oceania Professional League launch in Auckland

South Melbourne FC attends Oceania Professional League launch in Auckland

Auckland, 30 October 2025 – South Melbourne FC proudly attended the official launch of the Oceania Professional League in Auckland on Wednesday, marking another defining moment in the clubโ€™s long and distinguished history.

The inaugural season of the competition will commence in January 2026, featuring eight founding clubs from seven nations. The league will adopt a circuit series format, with matches played across key Pacific venues before concluding with finals later in the year.

South Melbourne FC has been confirmed as Australiaโ€™s representative and the only club competing outside of the Oceania confederation, reaffirming its standing as one of the regionโ€™s most iconic and respected football institutions.

    General Manager Strati Xynas said:

โ€œThis is a proud and historic moment for our club and supporters. To once again represent Australia on the international stage is an incredible honour. The Oceania Professional League provides a platform to showcase the professionalism and passion that has always defined us, while also building stronger relationships with our neighbours across the Pacific.โ€

    Head Coach Sinisa Cohadzic added:

โ€œThis competition is about more than football. Itโ€™s about creating pathways for players, coaches and staff to operate in a professional environment. Itโ€™s an opportunity to test ourselves, to learn, and to grow as part of an exciting new era for the game across Oceania.โ€

    Co-President Bill Papastergiadis said:

โ€œRepresenting Australia and bringing together the very best of football from across the Oceania region is something we are immensely proud of. This competition connects deeply with our history and our identity. We are excited to contribute to a new professional landscape that will benefit clubs, players and administrators throughout the region. Our football product will expand beyond our national border and will now have an international footprint. This is fitting for a club that was awarded by FIFA as the Oceania Club of the Century. This international stage will unite all football supporters behind our club as we represent our nation. We are keen to embrace all of the people from the Pacific who live in Australia as our immigrant origins reflect the broad fabric of our multicultural society.โ€

    Co-President Andrew Mesourouni said:

โ€œFootball is in my DNA as it is with South Melbourne. We deserve to be on the international stage and we are deeply excited by this new competition. Professionalism is at the core of our values and the club is now ready to compete at the highest levels.โ€

The Auckland event brought together representatives from all eight founding clubs, along with OFC officials and federation delegates, highlighting the collective commitment to developing a sustainable and competitive professional league for the Pacific.

As part of the 2026 calendar, South Melbourne FC will host a hub in Melbourne, welcoming all competing clubs to Australia. This hub will include a cultural festival of football, showcasing the unity and diversity of Oceania both on and off the pitch.

    Why it matters

The establishment of the Oceania Professional League represents a milestone for the growth of football across the region. It creates:

    • Professional opportunities for players to compete in a full-time environment

    • Player pathways for emerging Australian and Pacific footballers to reach higher levels of competition

    • Career development for administrators, analysts, coaches and operational staff to work within a professional structure

    • Regional collaboration between nations that share deep historical and cultural football connections

For South Melbourne FC, recognised by the OFC as the Oceania Club of the Century, participation in this league signifies a return to a region that has been central to its history and success. It reinforces the clubโ€™s ambition to be part of professional football once again, while continuing to create clear pathways from youth to senior levels for players and staff alike.

Further announcements regarding fixtures, travel schedules and fan engagement opportunities will be made in the coming weeks.
