  • George Georgiadis confirms departure

    George Georgiadis confirms departure

South Melbourne FC confirms that George Georgiadis has stepped away as Senior Head Coach for the 2025 season. George initially stepped in as a caretaker coach in 2022 and swiftly led our senior women to the Nike FC Cup Final. The pinnacle of his tenure was undoubtedly the 2023 season, where he inspired our team to clinch the NPLW Championship against Bulleen at The Home of the Matildas. This victory not only cemented his legacy as a championship-winning coach but also earned him a place in our Hall of Fame.

Despite the challenges of the 2024 season, George secured the Community Shield with a victory over Calder at Lakeside Stadium. Due to personal reasons, George has decided to step down from his role as senior coach.

SMFC Female Football Director Theo Chronis expressed gratitude for George’s commitment and contributions: “George took over during a challenging period for our women’s team, and within 12 months, he led us to a cup final and a historic NPLW win. George will always be a cherished member of the South family, remembered not only as a championship-winning coach but also as a mentor who supported the integration of youth players into the senior squad.

We wish him all the best for the future.

  • Vale Jimmy Armstrong (1943-2024)

    Vale Jimmy Armstrong (1943-2024)

South Melbourne Hellas is in mourning following the sad passing of Jimmy Armstrong on Monday 19 August 2024 at the age of 81.

Born on 21 March 1943 in Scotland, Jimmy played his youth football at Redfrew and Yoker Athletic before deciding to adventure to Australia and see where his life would take him. He arrived in Australia in 1966 and began his new life abroad playing for Hakoah in the Victorian State League. As a Middle Park co-tenant, Hakoah’s star player was soon on South Melbourne’s radar and Hellas eventually paid $5000 to secure his services ahead of the 1970 season.

Jimmy’s love affair with South Melbourne commenced immediately. On Friday 13 March 1970, he scored the winning goal in second half extra time to guide Hellas to a 3-2 win over Footscray JUST in the pre-season AMPOL Cup final replay at Olympic Park. Jimmy’s first league goal for the club came a few weeks later against the same opponents, this time at Schintler Reserve in a 3-1 away victory. Hellas finished in a disappointing fifth place finish in the league that season but Jimmy led the club’s goal scoring in all competitions with 15 goals. He also represented the Victorian state side against Werder Bremen in June of that year.

In 1971, Jimmy scored 13 league goals as Hellas finished second in the league and he netted in the State League Cup final as Hellas lost 3-2 to Croatia. 1972 was a breakout year, with Armstrong and Davie Gorrie scoring over 30 league goals between them as Hellas pipped George Cross to the league championship on goal difference. Jimmy’s remarkable 20 goal haul was recognised with selection for the Socceroos and he scored for them against South Korea in Seoul in October 1972. 1973 yielded 13 league goals and Jimmy memorably scored the winning goal for Victoria against Bristol Rovers at Olympic Park in May of that year.

1974 was arguably Jimmy’s greatest season in a South shirt. Hellas dominated the State League and won the title by four points as Jimmy scored 22 league goals, a record he held alone for 40 years until Milos Lujic equalled it in 2014 and overtook it in 2016 (25 league goals). One of the most iconic photos of the 1970s era is a half-naked Jimmy being chaired off Olympic Park by jubilant Hellas supporters when his two late goals secured the State League golden boot over Paul Murphy of George Cross in the final game of the season against Juventus. Jimmy’s goal scoring form continued as he scored in the Dockerty Cup final to help Hellas secure that trophy for the first time in its history with a 4-1 win over Ringwood City Wilhelmina. Not surprisingly, Jimmy was the 1974 Bill Fleming Medal winner.

The following season did not yield league success but Jimmy scored the winning penalty in the Dockerty Cup final as Hellas beat Sunshine City to win this historic trophy two seasons in a row. 1976 was Jimmy’s final season with the club and he began strongly with a goal in a 4-1 win over JUST in the Ampol Cup final. In the league, Hellas finished a whopping nine points clear of JUST to win its seventh State League championship in style. After seven incredible seasons at the club, 34-year-old Jimmy transferred to Melbourne Juventus in early 1977 as South Melbourne began life in the new National Soccer League. In all, Jimmy scored 152 goals in Victoria’s top flight, 89 of them for his beloved Hellas.

Following his retirement, Jimmy began coaching several clubs including at South Melbourne, where he coached juniors, the reserves team and assisting with the first team during the 1980s. He remained involved at the club in administration, performing various roles including as a committeeman, Club Secretary and liaison officer. Not surprisingly, he was added in Football Australia’s Hall of Fame in 1999 and was made a Life Member of Football Victoria. In 2002, he was named as the starting centre-forward in the South Melbourne Team of the Century, demonstrating the high regard in which he is held within theclub.

The outpouring of emotion – not just from the South Melbourne community but the wider Victorian and Australian football community – shows how many football people loved Jimmy Armstrong not only as a player but as a human being. “I’m not doing too bad for an old guy” and “I’ve been around here so long you may as well call me Dimitrios Armstrong-opoulos” were two of his favourite sayings when greeting people at the matches.

Perhaps fittingly, 50 years on from Hellas’ dominant 1974 season, the 2024 edition of South Melbourne Football Club saw Jimmy off in style by securing first place in the league (albeit with the finals series still to come) by winning their final game of the season at home featuring a team largely made up of players that had come from the club’s youth teams.

No matter what happens for the remainder of this season, there is no doubt that the great Jimmy Armstrong’s name will live on forever as a genuine all-time great for our beloved football club. Vale Jimmy Armstrong (1943-2024) – thanks for the memories.

  • South Melbourne FC Open Letter to the football community regarding National Second Division

South Melbourne FC Open Letter to the football community regarding National Second Division

As we stand at the crossroads of a new era for South Melbourne Football Club, we are compelled to reflect on our remarkable journey and the indelible legacy that we have carved in the annals of Australian football.

Our history is not just a chronicle of victories and achievements but a tapestry woven with passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the beautiful game.

Since our inception in 1959, South Melbourne FC has been a beacon of excellence and a symbol of footballing pride in Australia. Our journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the pre-eminent football clubs in the nation is a testament to the dedication of our players, coaches, staff, and the unwavering support of our fans.

Each victory, each trophy, and each milestone has been a collective triumph, resonating with the spirit and tenacity that define our club.

On the field, our successes have been monumental. With four national championships, numerous state league titles in both male and female football, and a cherished place in the history books as Oceania Club Champions, our achievements stand as a testament to our prowess and determination.

However, our journey has not been without its challenges. Our attempts to join the A-League have been met with disappointment on three occasions, despite our rich history and undeniable contribution to Australian football. These setbacks have not been due to a lack of capability or vision but rather biases against our storied background and flawed expansion strategies that overlooked the essence of what makes a football club truly great.

We watched as newer clubs like Melbourne Heart, sustained primarily by foreign investment, and Western United, which has struggled to capture the imagination of the Victorian public, were given opportunities that we believe rightfully belonged to us. Yet, these challenges have only strengthened our resolve. Last week, we again demonstrated our enduring spirit by defeating the A-League outfit Wellington Phoenix in the Round of 32 of the Australia Cup at our picturesque Lakeside Stadium.

In front of over 4,000 passionate fans, we showcased the magic of South Melbourne FC, proving once again that we belong on the national stage. Our club has been the nurturing ground for dozens of Socceroos and contributed to great coaching stories such as Ange Postecoglou, Joe Montemurro, Mike Valkanis, Patrick Kisnorbo, Kevin Muscat and more. These individuals have not only brought glory to South Melbourne but have also significantly contributed to the broader landscape of Australian and international football. Their journeys began with us, and their successes are a testament to the strong foundation and support that South Melbourne FC provides.

Additionally, many of our administrators have gone on to achieve prominence at the highest levels of the game, both domestically and internationally. Their contributions have helped shape the strategic direction and governance of football, ensuring that the principles of integrity and excellence that define South Melbourne FC are echoed throughout the sport. Now, more than ever, it is South Melbourne’s time to shine.

We continue to advocate for the commencement of the National Second Tier in 2025, a platform where our historic club can once again showcase its prowess and contribute to the growth of Australian football. Our place is at the forefront, driving forward with the same passion and commitment that has defined us for almost seven decades.

South Melbourne FC along with the other NST Foundation Clubs went through an extensive RFP & submission process, as well as provide a $500,000 Bank Guarantee based on the understanding & assurances that we would be establishing a standalone home & away second division.

The Association of Australian Football Clubs (AAFC) representing over 300 clubs across Australia was established with a charter to establish a National Second Division. The FA Board & the Executive can choose to ignore the will of the majority of Community based clubs across Australia & continue to protect the interests of 12 private franchises.

The National Second Tier in 2025, is our opportunity to finally unify the game and complete the Football pyramid

It’s time for the Chairman & Board of Football Australia to be pioneers and lead our great game.

As we prepare for our Round of 16 clash in the Australia Cup, we call upon our loyal fans and the broader public to rally behind us. Your unwavering support has always been our greatest strength, and together, we can continue to achieve greatness. Join us in this journey, and let us celebrate our rich history, acknowledge our challenges, and look forward to a future where South Melbourne FC continues to shine brightly on the national stage. It’s Time, Our Time.

  • South come back to win away in Dandenong

South come back to win away in Dandenong

In an intense encounter, South Melbourne secured a vital away victory against Dandenong Thunder. The match showcased moments of brilliance, missed opportunities, and ultimately decisive goals.

The game began with South Melbourne displaying early dominance, testing Dandenong Thunder’s defense repeatedly. Pierce Clark, the former South Melbourne goalkeeper turned out to be a formidable obstacle, denying South Melbourne’s attempts on goal.

Despite South Melbourne’s early pressure, they found themselves trailing in the 23rd minute when Birkan Kirdar of Dandenong Thunder exhibited exceptional skill to navigate through South Melbourne’s defense and slot the ball past Javi Lopez, leaving the South Melbourne goalkeeper helpless.

Undeterred by the setback, South Melbourne mounted a spirited comeback in the second half. Just a minute into the half, their captain Harrison Sawyer was fouled inside the penalty area, leading to a penalty. Sawyer confidently converted the spot-kick, leveling the score for his team.

The second half saw South Melbourne continuing to press forward, creating several promising opportunities. Halfpenny, Peios, Archibald, and Bonada all came close to scoring, but were unable to find the crucial breakthrough.

However, South Melbourne’s perseverance paid off in the 79th minute when Ross Archibald capitalised on a loose ball in the penalty area following a free kick, securing the lead for his team and sending the traveling fans into jubilation.

Despite both teams having chances in the closing minutes of the game, South Melbourne held on to their lead, emerging as deserving winners in Dandenong. The victory would undoubtedly serve as a morale booster for South Melbourne, while Dandenong Thunder would rue missed opportunities.
