    South sign Gerrie Sylaidos for 2019 NPL season

    South Melbourne FC is excited to announce that the club has signed 2018 NPL Victoria Rising Star Gerrie Sylaidos from Northcote City ahead of the upcoming season.

    Sylaidos joins the club following a break out season with Northcote City, with the attacking midfielder scoring in eight occasions in his 26 league matches. He was also instrumental in the club reaching the FFA Cup Round of 32 for the very first time.

    Prior to his time at Northcote, Gerrie also played at Melbourne City in both the National Youth League and NPL 2 competition.

    With the ability to play on either wing or directly behind the attackers, Sylaidos will bring a versatile and dangerous attacking threat to the South Melbourne line-up.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, SMFC Senior’s Football Manager Peter Kokotis was excited with the acquisition. “Gerrie had a very impressive 2018 season in the NPL and we are excited to see this young talent in our colours for the upcoming season. At only nineteen years of age he has room to continue his development as a footballer, so we look forward to seeing him throughout 2019.”

    South Melbourne FC welcomes Gerrie to the club and wishes him all the best for his time at Lakeside Stadium.

    South Melbourne FC extends this offer to any player wishing to join in our Spring training program. The program is held by accredited coaches and players will learn and develop their football skills whilst having fun in a team environment.

    The program will include 3 sessions per week between 5:30 to 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday and an indoor Futsal session/games on the Saturday.

    A unique aspect of this program is the opportunity for players to access world-class facilities and play matches on Lakeside Stadium. All players will receive a Kappa training top.

    The program incorporates over 40 sessions, runs across 15 weeks from Tuesday September 11 to Thursday December 20. The cost is $850 per player.

    The club competes in the National Premier League and National Premier League Womens competitions in Victoria with twelve participating teams. The club runs a successful Mini-Roos program for asprining young boys and girls looking to develop their football skills in an elite training environment.

    South Melbourne FC teams and coaches have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of competitive formats including Australian and international tours. In 2018 our teams have exposure to the Kanga Cup Canberra, Caruana Cup, AFS Shepparton Tournament and Heritage Youth Cup here in Australia and internationally at the Gothia Cup China and the Bangkok Girls Football cup.

    South Melbourne FC manages the largest football coaching program in Victorian schools.

    The club facilitates unique coaching development opportunities to further extend coaches technical knowledge and skill across the football environment. In 2018 coaches from South Melbourne FC traveled to China to present our player development program to a conference of over 80 local coaches.

    Building on our coach development program, the club is opening Expressions of Interest for 2019 coaching positions as we look to grow our development pathway for both players and coaches.

    SMFC is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitably qualified and experienced hospitality professionals to manage and operate the Food and Beverage areas of the South Melbourne Social Club situated at Lakeside Stadium.

    The areas include the following, with the South Melbourne Social Club including the 1959 Bar and Grill was constructed in early April 2017:

    1. The 1959 Bar and Grill
    2. Lakeside Futsal Centre
    3. SMFC Match Days (including mens and womens matches) held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park
    4. SMFC Events (including gala and family days) held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park
    5. Other SMFC Events held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park
    6. Youth Team Events including Training and Matchday in Caulfield and Albert Park

    The newly built facility is fully equipped with the following:

    • Full Commercial Kitchen and Serveries area
    • Full Equipped Bar Area including 9 Taps
    • Table seating capacity for up to 230 patrons

    This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced hospitality professional to build a successful food and beverage offering for an existing clientele, as well as capturing a new market situated in the heart of Albert Park.

    On behalf of the Postecoglou family, South Melbourne FC would like to thank you for all of the messages of support towards favourite son and club legend Ange Postecoglou on the passing of his father Jim.

    The family would like to announce that the funeral for Jim Postecoglou will be held at 1.30pm on Wednesday July 25th at Box Hill Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Hopetoun Parade, Box Hill.

    South Melbourne FC extends its deepest condolences to the Postecoglou family following the recent passing of Jim Postecoglou.

    As the father of club legend Ange Postecoglou, Jim was a familiar face to the South family for four decades, watching his son progress through the juniors all the way through to captaining and coaching the first team to national championships. It has been well documented by Ange that Jim was a huge influence on both his playing and coaching career.

    On behalf of the club, SMFC President Leo Athanasakis added that “the Postecoglou family has been a family we were and still are very proud to be associated with and we were all devastated when told of Jim’s passing. Our thoughts are with Ange’s family and friends at this terrible time.”

    Roganovic returns to SMFC for remainder of 2018

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm that championship winning goalkeeper and fan favourite Nikola Roganovic has re-joined the club for the remainder for the 2018 season.

    Roganovic returns to SMFC having already made over 100 competitive appearances for the club, including playing a leading role in the 2015 Dockerty Cup and 2016 NPL Grand Final triumphs. He also had an outstanding 2017 season, playing a huge part in the club reaching the FFA Cup semi final against Sydney FC. Having initially retired at the end of the 2017 season, Roganovic returns after a short stint with Richmond.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Senior Coach Sasa Kolman welcomed Nikola back to the club. “Nikola is an outstanding individual to bring back to the club. As well as great experience on the park and his ability as one of the best goalkeepers in the country, Nikola brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership qualities to the playing group. We can’t wait to have him back in our colours for the remainder of the season.”

    We wish Nikola all the best for his second stint with the club.

    Mastrantonio returns to the club

    South Melbourne FC would like to announce the return of former Matilda Ella Mastrantonio for the remainder of the 2018 NPL Victoria competition.

    Mastrantonio returns to the club where she played an integral midfield role in our NPLW championship win in 2017, including an outstanding display in the Grand Final against Geelong Galaxy.

    She brings a wealth of experience at the top level, including having previous stints in the Westfield W-League with both Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Women’s Football Diretor Gabrielle Giuliano was pleased to see Ella return to the club. “Ella is a very talented and experienced midfielder and we are naturally pleased to have her return to the club. Having previous experience also playing as part of this squad last year, we believe she will be able to adjust immediately and look forward to seeing her return on Saturday against Alamein.”

    We would once again like to welcome Ella to the club and wish her all the best for her time in blue.

    Tangalakis joins SMFC coaching staff

    South Melbourne FC would like to announce Con Tangalakis has joined the senior coaching staff for the remainder of the 2018 NPL Victoria season.

    Tangalakis will be well known to fans of Victorian football, having previously coached the Oakleigh Cannons for 3 seasons, including taking them to the Grand Final of the 2016 NPL Victoria season.

    In 2014, he was part of the coaching staff that lead state league side South Springvale Aris to their fabled FFA Cup run, eventually losing to Palm Beach FC in the round of 16.

    Con has amassed a wealth of football knowledge in his coaching career, including playing stints at Port Melbourne FC and Oakleigh.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, SMFC football director Nick Maikousis welcomed the new addition to our coaching staff. “We’d like to welcome Con to the club – and look forward to him working with Sasa Kolman for the remainder of the season. Con has a wealth of experience in Victorian Football, and will be a valuable asset to the changeroom”

    We would like to welcome Con to the SMFC family and wish him all the best for the remainder of the season in his new role.

    Four changes to senior roster ahead of Bulleen match

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the departures of Luke Pavlou, Andy Brennan, Ajdin Fetahagic and Keegan Coulter off our senior club roster ahead of this Sunday’s match at home against Bulleen.

    Football Directors Nicholas Maikousis and Andrew Mesourouni thanked the players for their time at the club. “It is never easy for players to depart the football club, however we would like to thank each one of them for their contribution to the club and would like wish each of them all the best for the future”.

    In an extremely busy opening week to the mid-season transfer period, we have also officially added Luke Adams, Ndumba Makeche, George Howard and Giuseppe Marafioti to our senior roster.

    We look forward to seeing the quartet represent the club in over the coming weeks.
