    Four changes to senior roster ahead of Bulleen match

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the departures of Luke Pavlou, Andy Brennan, Ajdin Fetahagic and Keegan Coulter off our senior club roster ahead of this Sunday’s match at home against Bulleen.

    Football Directors Nicholas Maikousis and Andrew Mesourouni thanked the players for their time at the club. “It is never easy for players to depart the football club, however we would like to thank each one of them for their contribution to the club and would like wish each of them all the best for the future”.

    In an extremely busy opening week to the mid-season transfer period, we have also officially added Luke Adams, Ndumba Makeche, George Howard and Giuseppe Marafioti to our senior roster.

    We look forward to seeing the quartet represent the club in over the coming weeks.

    South Melbourne sign George Howard

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the signing of dynamic forward George Howard.

    Howard joins the club following a stint in the NPL New South Wales competition, but he will be most familiar to Victorian football fans through his 3 years and 13 Hyundai A-League appearances with Melbourne Victory FC.

    He will immediately join the club and provide Sasa Kolman with another attacking option ahead of our home match this Sunday against FC Bulleen Lions. 

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, head coach Sasa Kolman was pleased to have secured Howard’s services for the rest of the season.

    “George is a very composed and versatile forward, who can play in any role across the front three, and just behind the striker.” Kolman said.

    “With his experience at national level and hard working nature, we hope that he can make an immediate impact at our club.”

    We wish George all the best in his time at the club and look forward to seeing him make his debut on Sunday.

    South signs Jerrad Tyson from Western Sydney Wanderers

    South Melbourne FC is pleased to announce the signing of Jerrad Tyson, with the 28-year-old goalkeeper signing from Western Sydney Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League.

    Tyson will replace the injured Alastair Bray on the club’s roster, with the latter suffering a season ending knee injury in the Round 1 match against Bulleen Lions.

    Tyson joins the club with a decade of national league experience, including spending time with Gold Coast United, North Queensland Fury, Perth Glory and most recently four seasons with the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League.

    An AIS graduate, Tyson also has represented Australia at both Under 23 and Under 20 level, as well as playing abroad for Sun Pegasus in a one year stint in Hong Kong.

    He will immediately join the club ahead of our away match this Saturday night against Hume City.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Senior Coach Sasa Kolman was pleased with the acquisition. “After losing Alastair at such an early stage of the season, it is great to be able to bring in an experienced goalkeeper such as Jerrad. We think he will assist the club not just on the park, but through his professional and hard-working nature off the pitch.”

    Also speaking to smfc.com.au, SMFC Football Director’s Nick Maikousis and Andrew Mesourouni were also pleased with the signing. “We’re excited to bring an experienced footballer and leader into our football club. Jerrad’s experience in the A-League and in Asia will be of great value for the remainder of the season as we look to climb up the table”.

    Tayler Stevens signs for 2018

    South Melbourne FC would like to announce the signing of Tayler Stevens ahead of the NPLW season opener on Saturday afternoon.

    The Queensland born Stevens, joins us following a brilliant season as captain of Souths United in 2017.

    The 22 year old is a hard working and composed defender, while also being a leader on her park. This has been proven by the various leadership roles that she has been given throughout past three seasons, as well as being selected in the NPLW Queensland Team of Year in 2017.

    Her versatility to play in any position across the back four and as a defensive midfielder is also a strength of her game and something that will be of benefit to Socrates Nicolaidis.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au. SMFC Women’s Football Director was pleased to welcome Tayler to the club. “We are pleased to have Tayler join the club for the upcoming season.
    With her experience in Queensland’s NPLW competition and flexibility across the back four, we are looking forward to having a fantastic player join us for Round 1.”

    Young Matildas star Sakalis signs for 2018

    South Melbourne FC can confirm that we have have bolstered our squad ahead of the NPLW Victoria opener, signing Young Matildas star Sofia Sakalis from Melbourne City.

    Sakalis is one of the hottest prospects in Australian football, playing a leading role with the Young Matildas at the 2017 AFC Under 16 Women’s Championship tournament in Vietnam. As part of this, Sakalis scored 11 times in 5 games, ensuring that Australia qualified for the AFC U16 Women’s Champoinships in Thailand.

    Her superb form with country and throughout her time at the NTC saw Sakalis sign with Melbourne City in this season’s W-League. In what was a huge achievement, she managed to play in a competitive senior match at age 15 and
    was part of the squad that most recently won the W-League championship.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au. SMFC Women’s Football Director was pleased to welcomed Sofia back to the club. “It is great to welcome a former junior of ours back home. We’ve been proud to see her grow as a talented young
    footballer and young lady and therefore we are extremely pleased to have her back at Lakeside for the upcoming season. Along with Melina Ayres, its very exciting that we have two of the brightest prospects of women’s football at the club.

    We would llke to welcome Sofia to the club and wish her the best as a South player in 2018.

    South add four more to NPLW Senior Squad

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the addition of four players to its NPLW senior roster ahead of the 2018 season opener this week.

    Sarah Richardson is the first addition, who will be joining the club from Heidelberg United. The hard working and creative midfielder has a wealth of experience in Victoria’s top flight, having played with Bundoora United and Bendigo Vipers in the Women’s Premier League. As part of this, she also spent numerous years with the FFV State Squad and Melbourne Victory Women’s team.

    In her time with Bendigo, she also burst onto the scene as a highly talented youngster, while also winning the WPL Golden Boot in the 2010 season.

    Joining Richardson in midfield will be Championship Winner Julia Nicolaci, who has re-signed for the 2018 season. Nicolaci was an integral part of midfield in our WNPL Championship last season and will once again provide us with another fantastic attacking option.

    As well as the experienced duo, the club has also promoted both Chelsea Blisset and Leah Scroggie from last season’s Under 18 squad. Having played in senior matches at times throughout the second half of last season, the club is excited to promote two fantastic young prospects into the senior squad.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Director of Women’s Football Gabrielle Giuliano was pleased with the four additions to the squad. “it is exciting to welcome a combination of both experience and youth to our senior squad for the upcoming season. While we are certain that both Sarah and Julia will add a tremendous amount of experience and quality into our midfield, we are also very excited to see some of our youth prospects also given a chance to grow as footballers. We wish them all the best for the upcoming season.”

    The club would also like to confirm that championship winners Antonia Niteros, Victoria Argyropoulos and Caitlin Greiser will sit out the 2018 season, with the trio taking a year off for personal reasons. SMFC would like to thank each of them for their contributions to the club and wishes them the best for the upcoming year without football.

    South Sign Four Youngsters

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm it has included four players from the club’s youth setup as part of the 2018 NPL Victoria senior squad.

    Having already had a taste at senior level, Giordano Marafioti and Joshua Hodes have been rewarded for an exceptional season with South’s Championship winning Under 20s team under Sasa Kolman.

    Marafioti, who was selected for the Australian Under 20 side last year, will provide Kolman with a fast and explosive option in the attacking third. As the reigning youth Under 20s MVP and Golden Boot winner, the club is very excited to see him play senior football.

    Hodes is an up and coming right back. He has a fantastic defensive game and the ability to move further up the field with pace and creativity.

    Our third youth signing promoted from the Under 20 squad is Ben Djiba. The dynamic winger provides another attacking option through the midfield and up front with his speed, spontaneity and footwork.

    Giorgi Zarbos is our fourth and final promotion from the youth squad who, as a central defender, will add depth to our defensive stocks. His move to the senior squad will give him an opportunity to learn and gain some valuable experience at the top level.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Senior Coach Sasa Kolman was thrilled to have the four boys join the senior squad. “While we have added some experience in key positions, it was imperative that we look towards our youth for the upcoming season. All four boys have been exceptional while I coached them in the Under 20s and each has had a tremendous pre-season. As well as the signed four, we have also have four other Under 20 players who have been a part of the senior squad’s training sessions in the past few weeks. Together with training they have gained experience playing senior football against Guangzhou R&F FC in our two friendly matches. Importantly, we will keep working closely with these players to further their development as footballers and young men to see them grow into senior players over the next few seasons.”

    South Melbourne FC Director of Youth Football, Andrew Mesourouni, commented by saying “It’s a testament to the club to be in a position to promote so many youth players into our senior ranks. These young footballers are the future of this club and Australian football. I am so proud of the boys and there are many of the same smashing the door to break through. I wish Giordano, Josh, Ben and Georgi the best and I know they will be given the opportunity to entertain our supporters.”

    Minopoulos re-signs for 2018 season

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the re-signing of Leigh Minopoulos head of the 2018 NPL Victoria season.

    Minopoulos has been a vital component of South’s attacking third since joining in 2014, playing 115 matches in all competitions and scoring on 33 occasions.

    The life-long South fan and former junior player has also been involved in both the 2014 and 2016 NPL Championship wins, as well as playing a large on-field role in our 2015 Dockerty Cup win. He would also be the only South player to have scored against an A-League side in the FFA Cup in our Semi Final defeat at home to Sydney FC in 2017.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Football Director Nicholas Maikousis was pleased with the re-signing. “Leigh has been a large part of the club for the past 4 seasons and we are naturally pleased to have a player with his ability and leadership qualities re-commit to the club for the upcoming season.”

    We welcome Leigh back for 2018 and wish him all the best for another season in blue and white.

    Marianna Anthony joins for 2018

    South Melbourne FC would like to confirm the addition of defender Marianna Anthony ahead of the 2018 NPLW Victoria season.

    Marianna rejoins the club following a stint with Alamein, playing in 25 matches during the 2017 season in the heart of defence. She will return to her previous home
    at Lakeside Stadium, where she was a part of South’s 2014 and 2015 WPL Championship triumphs.

    As well as her defensive ability, she is also experienced at this level and very calm on the ball when moving forward.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Women’s Football Director Gabrielle Giuliano was pleased with the signing. “We are excited to welcome back a familiar face to the club and someone who will assist us in defence for the upcoming season.
    She’s a fantastic young girl, who we hope can play a role alongside some familiar names in the back half.”

    We welcome Marianna back to the club and look forward to seeing her in Blue and White again in 2018.

    Mala steps away from football for 12 months

    South Melbourne FC confirms that right back Tim Mala will be taking a year off from top-flight football in 2018 due to increased work commitments.

    Mala arrived at Lakeside Stadium from Dandenong Thunder in July 2013. He made his debut against Bentleigh on 21 July 2013 and went on to represent SMFC in 105 league/finals matches, with 124 competitive appearances for the club in all competitions.

    His playing honours during his time at SMFC include being a starting member in two NPL Victoria championships (2014, 2016), the NPL Victoria premiership (2015), the Dockerty Cup (2015) and the FFV Community Shield (2015). Individually, Tim won the SMFC Players’ Player of the Year in 2014 and – due to being a championship player – is an automatic SMFC Hall of Fame member. He also played a part in the club’s media team, with his very popular “Minute with Mala” segment on SMFCTV.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, Football Director Nicholas Maikousis thanked Tim for his time with the club. “While we are disappointed not to have Tim around for this season, we would like to wish him all the best for the upcoming year with his personal ventures. He’s a person that is loved around the club and we will certainly miss his presence around Lakeside Stadium and within our change rooms”.

    Also speaking to smfc.com.au, Mala thanked the fans and the club. “It’s been a great time in my life and I am very thankful of the good times. With some increased commitments in my personal life it made it hard to continue for the upcoming season, so i will step away for a year and see where we are at in 12 months time. I’d like to thank the club for its understanding and for the past 4 years, it certainly is a place that has given me many memories and somewhere that feels like a second home. I would also like to thank the supporters for all their amazing support over that time, while i am around this year i will be one of you and continue to support the boys and club.”

    We thank Tim for his service to the club and wish him all the best in the next 12 months.
