South Melbourne Re-Affirms Commitment To Tynan-Eyre Cup And Refuses To Play In Further Matches Against Preston

    Monday, 16 September 2002 12:00 AM

South Melbourne Soccer Club joins the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation in condemning the actions of Preston Soccer Club and its supporters at yesterday’s final of the Tynan-Eyre Cup.

South Melbourne had requested additional security and police presence for the match at Bob Jane Stadium after crowd trouble involving Preston fans at the recent Victorian Soccer Federation Grand Final, also held at Bob Jane Stadium.

South Melbourne urges the Victoria Police and Victorian Soccer Federation to take the appropriate action against Preston and its supporters. Whilst remaining committed to the Tynan-Eyre Cup – a charitable Victoria Police fund-raising tournament played in memory of murdered policemen Stephen Tynan and Damien Eyre – South Melbourne will not allow any fixture involving the Preston Soccer Club to be held at Bob Jane Stadium and nor will it play further matches against Preston.

In calling for strong measures against Preston and its supporters, South Melbourne believes the game of soccer can not allow the actions of a small minority to undermine the collective efforts to provide a welcoming environment and entertaining product for all Australians.

There has been no change to the date and venue – Wednesday, September 11, at the Veneto Club, Bulleen.

In Round 1 of the pre-season tournament, South Melbourne defeated Fawkner 2 – 0 and in the late game Melbourne Knights accounted for Premier League Champions, Preston Lions 3 – 2.

All four teams had to deal with rainy and very windy conditions making it difficult for the competing sides. 2000 patrons braved the terrible weather conditions, at Green Gully Reserve on Monday night (2-9-02) with Tynan – Eyre Cup Chairman Ron Sinclair saying “it was an enormous success”.

“The feedback I received whilst mingling with the crowd was that the format was very appealing to them”.

“The staff and administration of Green Gully Soccer Club must be commended for their professionalism. Their helpfulness to participating teams and members of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation was of the highest order. Without this sort of support, the Tynan-Eyre Cup could not even get off the ground”, says Sinclair.

In Round 2, South Melbourne will take on Melbourne Knights in the clash of the NSL Clubs, while in the early game Fawkner will look to avenge their Premier League Grand Final loss when they take on Preston. Wednesday, 4 September 2002 12:00 AM

South Melbourne captain Paul Trimboli led the Club to victory when he scored twice in Monday night’s Tynan – Eyre Cup opener at Green Gully.

In rainy and very windy conditions, goals in the 8th and 34th minutes by the skipper was enough to ensure a win for the Albert Park Club which fielded a line up involving a mix of experience and youth.

Robert Liparoti had an outstanding game, slotting in front of Durakovic and pushing into midfield where he would team up with South’s rising young talents. The young trio of Massimo Murdocca, Ray Sekulovski and Vince Lia all began in midfield with the tenacious David Clarkson returning to for his first competitive hit out after missing last season season due to a knee injury.

Trimboli’s first goal came from a long range effort with hit the underside of the cross bar and crossed the line after rebounding from the back of the Fawkner goalkeeper. His second was scored from a Ray Sekulovski cross which Trimboli easily headed past the keeper.

South who were against a fierce wind in the second half, defended well keeping the Fawkner strikers at bay and creating chances of their own. South Melbourne could have extended their lead when Brisbane born striker Michael Baird came on as a substitute late in the match.

In the late game cross town rivals Melbourne Knights defeated Victorian Premier League Champions Preston 3 – 2. The Tynan – Eyre Cup ladder after Round 1 is as follows:
