Match Report: SMFC vs Port Melbourne Sharks

South Melbourne FC secured a 4-2 victory against Port Melbourne in a very entertaining match played at Lakeside Stadium last Friday night. Doubles from Milos Lujic and Nick Epifano won the three points for the home side and continued South’s pressure on League leaders Bentleigh Greens with only a few rounds remaining.

Adrian Zahra almost opened the scoring for Port Melbourne with a left-footed effort that beat Nikola Roganovic but not the crossbar, with the away side showing an early sign of intent. On the half hour mark however, Lujic opened the scoring with a textbook header from a wonderful Brad Norton cross from the left side. South looked to be cruising, however Nick Krousoratis got on the end of a through ball and tucked the ball past Roganovic to level the scores just before the halftime break.

Epifano restored South’s lead from the penalty spot just minutes after the break, after Leigh Minopoulos had been fouled in the area. Port Melbourne struck back almost immediately however, with Krousoratis getting his second goal of the night by heading the ball past Roganovic after the South custodian had initially saved his shot. Once again, South’s lead had been squandered.

Incredibly, the home side re-took the lead just minutes after the equalising goal, when another fantastic cross by Norton found an unmarked Lujic at the back post to score past goalkeeper Michael Stark. The game was then finished off with just over twenty minutes to play by Epifano, who got on the end of a fantastic through-ball from Minopoulos before slotting past the advancing Stark for his second goal of the night.

Lujic, playing his 50th League match for South Melbourne, should have had a hat-trick minutes later after finding himself one-on-one with Stark, however Port’s custodian made an excellent save to deny South a fifth goal. ‘Millsy’ has scored an incredible 38 League goals in 50 League games for South, with an overall record of 47 goals in 62 games across all competitions in just under two seasons at SMFC.

South’s 4-2 victory was made even more crucial with both Bentleigh and Heidelberg drawing their League matches this weekend. This means that South is now in outright second place on the ladder and two points clear of Heidelberg. It also means that South – with a game in hand and with a better goal difference than Bentleigh – is now just three points behind the Greens on the ladder.

It was further good news in the Under 20s as South Melbourne defeated Port Melbourne 3-0 thanks to second half goals from Gerry Kavadas, Giuseppe Marafioti (penalty kick) and Nashir Hussainy.

South’s next match is away against Avondale FC on Saturday 15 August. Kick-off is at 3pm at Doyle Street Reserve.

  • NPL Preview – SMFC vs Port Melbourne

NPL Preview – SMFC vs Port Melbourne

Following the roller-coaster ride of highs and lows in Cup matches last week, South Melbourne FC’s focus returns back to the League and tonight’s PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria match against Port Melbourne.

The disappointment of the Westfield FFA Cup elimination on the Gold Coast last Wednesday 29 July was quickly forgotten four days later, when South dismantled Oakleigh 3-0 to win the Dockerty Cup last Sunday 2 August. Milos Lujic scored in both Cup games, including a double against Oakleigh as South won the Dockerty Cup for the eighth time in its 56 year history. Centre-forward Lujic once again looms as a key man in tonight’s game.

South will be keen on putting pressure on League leaders Bentleigh Greens, who are currently five points clear on top of the PS4 NPL Victoria ladder but having also played an extra match. For South to stand a chance of overhauling Bentleigh for the Minor Premiership, three points are vital against Port Melbourne tonight. In other key matches this round, Bentleigh host Avondale tonight whilst Heidelberg United, who are level on points and goal difference with South, face a potentially tricky fixture against the resurgent North Geelong Warriors on Sunday.

Tonight’s match also represents an opportunity for South to claim bragging rights against their most local of rivals geographically. Taylor will no doubt be wary of the challenge posed by Port Melbourne, who sits in seventh position in the League standings with 30 points. South were almost upset by the Sharks in the earlier meeting between the two sides this season on Friday 1 May, with left-back Brad Norton’s injury time goal snatching a 2-2 draw for South at SS Anderson Reserve.

Port drew with League leaders Bentleigh 2-2 in their last outing two weeks ago and are on a five game undefeated run that stretches back to June. Kamal Ibrahim, a former South player, has scored five goals this season and is Port’s leading goal scorer in the League in 2015.

Tonight’s match between South Melbourne and Port Melbourne kicks off at 8:30pm at Lakeside Stadium. Those unable to make the match can follow live updates on the Club’s Facebook and Twitter accounts by using the handles #SMFC and #PS4NPLVIC.

  • South’s Captain Eagar for more trophies in 2015

South’s Captain Eagar for more trophies in 2015

South Melbourne Captain Michael Eagar continued his incredible winning run when he lifted the Dockerty Cup on Sunday, following his team’s resounding 3-0 victory over the Oakleigh Cannons.

Since arriving at Lakeside Stadium in January 2014, Eagar has enjoyed remarkable success, with Sunday’s triumph joining the 2014 NPL Victoria Championship and the 2015 FFV Community Shield as trophies that the skipper has lifted for South Melbourne.

Prior to his time at SMFC, Eagar won the old Victorian Premier League title with Northcote City in 2013 and also tasted Championship success with Redlands United in the Brisbane Premier League in 2012.

Speaking to SMFC TV after Sunday’s Dockerty Cup final, the 26 year old said he was delighted to have been a part of another winning title and praised the depth and durability of the squad as integral to the win.

“I’m over the moon, personally and for the boys, for the fans, it’s a great feeling to win a trophy for this great club,” Eagar said. “We had many great performers tonight. It was our third game in nine days, we’ve had to recover well and prepare well. CT has had to rotate a lot.”

“We haven’t just got a good eleven, we’ve got a really good seventeen or eighteen and everyone’s contributed. Especially across this Cup campaign, we’ve all had to dig deep. We had some fatigued bodies out there, a lot of guys with knocks but they all showed what they are prepared to do for this club.”

SMFC is currently third in the PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria competition and is five points behind League leaders Bentleigh Greens with four games to play until the 2015 NPL Victoria Finals Series. South also has a game in hand over the Greens and must win that game to keep up with the League leaders.

Eagar said that while it was important to celebrate the Dockerty Cup triumph, the players were already looking ahead to the rest of the season. “One of our objectives at the start of the season was to win the Dockerty Cup and now we can tick that off. That’s what we aim to do at this club, to win silverware. The group here, we strive for trophies, we don’t strive to come second or third.”

“We’ll certainly celebrate this and enjoy the moment, however we’re already looking forward to the upcoming challenges over the next few weeks.”

  • South Win Eighth Dockerty Cup in Convincing Fashion

South Win Eighth Dockerty Cup in Convincing Fashion

South Melbourne FC has claimed an eighth Dockerty Cup triumph in its history after putting in a sublime team performance to defeat the Oakleigh Cannons 3-0 in the final at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday.

Two goals from Milos Lujic and another to Leigh Minopoulos, all after the half time break, delivered South its second piece of silverware in 2015 and a first Dockerty Cup Championship since 1995.

The win was the perfect way to avenge Wednesday night’s FFA Cup loss to the Palm Beach Sharks on the Gold Coast and was South’s third trophy since Chris Taylor took charge of the Club in mid-2013.

Lambros Honos had a fantastic chance to put Oakleigh ahead on the half hour mark when he went through on goal, however he was denied by an excellent one-on-one save from Nikola Roganovic. The save was the only clear cut chance for either side in a tight first half, with space in attacking areas hard to come by.

South won the game with a sensational burst immediately after the break, scoring three goals in the space of fourteen minutes to seal victory. Firstly, a brilliant backheel from Leigh Minopoulos put the ball on a platter for Lujic to score the first goal of the final on 47 minutes. Minopoulos raced onto a Nick Epifano pass and flicked it back into space for Lujic to find the back of the net with ease.

The big striker then sent the South fans into raptures when he scored again four minutes later with a thumping header from an Epifano corner. Lujic continued his penchant for delivering in the big games and has scored a staggering 21 goals across all competitions this season.

South sealed the result on the hour mark, with Minopoulos getting on the scoresheet after some great work from Iqi Jawadi. The tenacious midfielder dispossessed Steve Pantelidis and made a mazy run into the box before slipping the ball for Minopoulos to fire home from point blank range.

In addition to his two goals, Lujic also picked up the Jimmy Mackay Medal as Man of the Match.

Taylor praised the character of his side after a difficult week and said that the first twenty minutes of the game was the main focus heading into the final.

“After the disappointing week we had, the boys showed a lot of character out there.”

“Pre-game we just focused on the first twenty minutes. We just said that we wanted to match them for endeavour and intensity and then see how we progressed from there.”

“At the half time break, I felt we had to move the ball around quicker. We did that in the second half and the result came. I think it was probably our best half of football for the season.”

“This group has got very very good character. It’s been a difficult season for us with injuries, suspensions, boys going away on trial and those sort of things. We’re still a chance to come away with a few trophies at the end of it all, which is great.”

South defeated rivals Melbourne Knights, Heidelberg and Oakleigh on its way to lifting the Dockerty Cup trophy. South now has eight Dockerty Cup triumphs, having previously won the competition back in 1974, 1975, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1995.

  • Dockerty Cup Final Preview – SMFC v Oakleigh

Dockerty Cup Final Preview – SMFC v Oakleigh

South Melbourne FC has the chance to win its first Dockerty Cup Championship in 20 years when it faces the Oakleigh Cannons in the 2015 final this Sunday afternoon.

Should South emerge victorious, it will be the second piece of silverware that the Club has claimed this season, following the FFV Community Shield triumph over the Melbourne Knights on Friday 13 February.

The match has become especially important in the wake of Wednesday night’s heartbreaking Westfield FFA Cup defeat to the Palm Beach Sharks in a penalty shootout.

An issue for Coach Chris Taylor will be managing the fitness of several key players following the Gold Coast loss. The likes of Michael Eagar, Nick Epifano and Milos Lujic all played 120 minutes at Cbus Stadium as well as 90 minutes in the tough 0-0 League draw at Pascoe Vale last Saturday.

Epifano has been a Cup specialist for South so far this season, rising to the occasion with late goals several times in the lead-up to the final. He has scored six goals in the FFA Cup and the Dockerty Cup in 2015. The speedster scored a late brace to inspire South to a memorable victory over the Melbourne Knights in early June and also scored a late brace in the Dockerty Cup semi final win over Heidelberg.

Arthur Papas’ Oakleigh side defeated Corio, Richmond, Bendigo City, South Springvale and Hume City en route to the final. Dusan Bosnjak is the key man in the opposition camp, with the playmaker usually serving as a barometer to Oakleigh’s performances.

The two teams have played each other twice this season and have each claimed a victory. South won the first encounter 1-0 at Lakeside Stadium on Thursday 19 February, before Oakleigh triumphed 2-0 at Jack Edwards Reserve on Friday 22 May.

The last time South won the Dockerty Cup final was on Sunday 1 October 1995. Paul Trimboli (36’) and Vaughan Coveny (60’) scored for South, with an own goal (67’) also contributing to the 3-1 win against the Melbourne Knights at Olympic Park in front of 7000 spectators.

Should Taylor’s men claim victory on Sunday, it will be the eighth time that South Melbourne have won the Dockerty Cup, following triumphs in 1974, 1975, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1995. Oakleigh are yet to win the Dockerty Cup during 106 years of Dockerty Cup competition.

The Dockerty Cup final kicks off at 4:30pm at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday. If the match is drawn after normal time, extra time will follow, as will penalties if the two sides are still level after extra time.

Those unable to make the game can follow the Club’s official Facebook and Twitter pages, using the hashtags #SMFC and #Dockerty Cup for live updates.

SOUTH Melbourne’s return to the national stage has been cut short in gut-wrenching fashion, losing an epic penalty shootout to Palm Beach Sharks at Cbus Super Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite being the dominant team for large parts of the match, the former National Soccer League powerhouse was left to rue some wasteful finishing in front of goal in both regulation and extra time.

The match ended 1-1 after 120 draining minutes, before captain Michael Eagar became the heartbreak story, missing what was his side’s ninth spot kick to hand Palm Beach an 8-7 shootout victory.

South striker Milos Lujic kicked off what would become an eye-catching performance with a 34th minute header that put his side in front, before Florian Matk restored parity from the penalty spot just four minutes later.

Despite enjoying the better of possession, territory and the chances in the second half, South could not find a way home in regulation time and it was much the same story for the half an hour of extra time.

South had a 98th minute appeal for a handball by Sharks defender Martin Vazquez waved away before Palm Beach went close two times in a minute just before the end of the first period of extra time – first from a long distance strike off the boot of substitute Jack Boxall and then off a header by captain Kristian Rees from the resultant corner.

Palm Beach’s Eoghan Murphy was sent off in the 113th minute for a second bookable offence, but with both teams clearly out on their feet, South was unable to capitalise on the man advantage – although Lujic did spurn two golden opportunities to score in additional time.

The 500 or so South Melbourne fans who had flown to the Gold Coast for the game created a buzz around the ground – and they were expectant early on as their team peppered the goals repeatedly in the opening stages.

Palm Beach wasn’t without its own chances, however, and came close to taking an early lead via Rees Duncan, who was denied by South goalkeeper Nikola Roganovic, in the 10th minute.

But ultimately it would be the Oceania Club of the Century that opened the scoring in the 34th minute via Lujic, who has 10 goals in 14 National Premier League matches this season.

Nick Epifano had had a shot cleared off the line just minutes earlier, but the winger got involved in the goal soon after as his side capitalised on a turnover in midfield by the Sharks.

Jake Barker-Daish, familiar with the ground from his days at Gold Coast United, started the counter attack, before Iqbal Jawadi advanced the ball forward in conjunction with Epifano.

Brad Norton then provided a fantastic overlapping run to get inside the box before cutting a brilliant cross back for Lujic, who had escaped his defender at the far post and only had to nod the ball in to an empty net from point-blank range.

But after working so hard to gain the acsendancy, South threw it away three minutes later as the match was turned on its head.

A slick through ball from midfield by Nikola Mirkovic appeared to be going out for a goal kick, only for Duncan to refuse to give up the chase.

Roganovic could have picked the ball up but instead allowed it to go past him, resulting in a collision between he and the Palm Beach striker which forced the referee in to giving a spot kick.

To make matters worse for him, the former Melbourne Heart shot-stopper was sent the wrong way by Matk’s penalty and it was 1-1 at the break.

Undettered, South came out after the break and regained the upper hand in the contest.

As the second half got older, and the chances piled up for the visitors, the Sharks retreated further and further back in defence.

David Stirton, who was a part of Bentleigh Greens’ run to the semi-finals last year, forced Palm Beach goalkeeper Shane Viitakangas into a sharp save in the 54th minute after being picked out by Lujic.

Epifano’s left-footed shot from inside the box deflected out for a corner in the 79th minute before another searching run forward by the impressive Norton almost produced an exact replica of South’s first half goal, but this time Lujic was confronted by just enough pressure at the far post.

And Lujic, the 2014 Football Federation Victoria Gold Medal winner, also had a late chance to win it for South in regulation time, but narrowly failed to keep his header from Jawadi’s cross down.

FFA Cup Match Preview – SMFC vs Palm Beach

South Melbourne FC returns to Queensland for the first time in over a decade when it faces the Palm Beach Sharks at Cbus Stadium on the Gold Coast in Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 action on Wednesday night.

The last time South was in Queensland for a competitive match was on Saturday 3 January 2004, when the Brisbane Strikers defeated Stuart Munro’s South Melbourne side 1-0 at Perry Park during the final season of the old National Soccer League.

Eleven years on, Chris Taylor’s South Melbourne side play their first match in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 proper, having failed to qualify for the inaugural competition in 2014. South qualified this year thanks to qualifying wins against Whittlesea United (14 March), North Sunshine (15 April), Melbourne Knights (5 June) and Frankston Pines (17 June).

Palm Beach reached the Round of 32 with qualifying wins against Broadbeach United (12 May), South West Queensland Thunder (6 June) and Noosa Lions FC (27 June). In the FFA Cup last year, Palm Beach knocked out both Sydney Hakoah (Round of 32) and South Springvale (Round of 16) before losing their Quarter Final match 0-5 against the Central Coast Mariners.

Wednesday night’s match will be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports Channel 505, with kick-off at 7:30pm. South Melbourne coverage will begin from 6:30pm, with a special documentary on the Club screening from 6:30pm prior to the game starting.

South Melbourne FC is pleased to unveil a new away kit for the 2015 Westfield FFA Cup, coinciding with emerging Australian apparel provider BLK Sport committing to the Club for the next three years as our Official Apparel and Kit Supplier.

SMFC joins the likes of Richmond FC (AFL), Western Bulldogs (AFL), Melbourne Storm (NRL) and Melbourne Rebels (Super Rugby) in wearing the BLK brand in Victoria and will be the marquee football (soccer) club wearing BLK in Victoria.

As part of the extremely lucrative deal, SMFC will also now have custom designed playing gear and merchandise forming a part of its range, as well as a unique online store that will allow SMFC fans from across the globe to purchase gear from 2016 onwards.

As hosts of the Round of 32 FFA Cup tie, our opponents Palm Beach SC will be in their blue home strip and SMFC will wear its original white top with red V, which was the first strip worn in competition by South Melbourne Hellas from 1960 to 1964. For future FFA Cup matches, South will wear a blue BLK shirt similar to its 2015 NPL Victoria shirt. As per our NPL home shirt, Plastamasta Knauf will once again feature on the front as our major sponsor, with MW Lomax and AIS Insurance featuring on the sleeve. Beachcomber Cafe and Bank of Sydney will also once again be on the back of the shirt.

As the heritage shirt was specifically designed to recognise and respect the history and formation of SMFC in 1959, the Club invited legends of that wonderful era in Michael Mandalis (11 Seasons, 5 Championships), Takis Xanthopoulos (5 Seasons, 3 Championships) and Takis Mantarakis (9 Seasons, 4 Championships) to help launch the new shirt. The occasion was very emotional for these legends and they invited current SMFC players Leigh Minopoulos and Nick Epifano to join them in the photo shoot, whilst also providing them with advice for what is going to be an exciting upcoming week back on the national stage.

Speaking to smfc.com.au, Leigh Minopoulos spoke about how much of an honour it was to respect the club in such a way. “I’ve grown up in a South family and have supported the club all of my life, so to have names like Mandalis, Mantarakis and Xanthopoulos who are legends of the club get emotional seeing the shirt worn again means quite a bit to me and I’m sure it means alot to many other South fans too. I can’t wait to wear the shirt next Wednesday night.”

SMFC Marketing Manager George Kouroumalis was excited about the new sponsorship arrangement. “BLK Sport are ready to make their mark on Australian football and as a club we are looking to do the same. We are very pleased that they have chosen our brand, alongside some other large clubs in Australian sport. Following BLK’s sponsorship of our custom designed FFA Cup gear, we cannot wait to get started on some new merchandise ideas for our fans in 2016. This sponsorship opportunity not only saves us a great amount of money per season but also ensures that we have modern and unique gear that is a point of difference from other clubs.”

The match will be shown live on Fox Sports this Wednesday night at 7.30pm, with a documentary on the club also being screened on the same channel from 6.30pm.

NPL Match Preview – SMFC vs Pascoe Vale

South Melbourne FC will be looking to keep the pressure on the teams above them on the PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria ladder when it travels to CB Smith Reserve to face Pascoe Vale on Saturday night.

South sit in third position on the PS4 NPL Victoria ladder, a point behind Heidelberg United and five points away from the Bentleigh Greens. They will face a tough test in the form of the sixth placed Pascoe Vale, who pushed South all the way earlier in the season at Lakeside Stadium in a match that finished 1-0 to the defending Champions.
South’s last League match was the 2-1 defeat to the Melbourne Knights on Sunday 12 July. Despite losing that game, Chris Taylor’s side come into the Pascoe Vale match full of confidence after defeating rivals Heidelberg United 2-1 in their Dockerty Cup semi final tie on Wednesday15 July.

In a match that could prove to be a turning point in South’s season, Nick Epifano scored a late brace against the Bergers to keep his side alive in all competitions this season. Despite missing a number of games, Epifano has scored nine goals across all competitions in 2015 and shapes as the key man if South are to get the points this weekend.

Barring the absences of Kristian Konstantinidis and Dane Milovanovic, who are both recovering from long term injuries, Taylor will have a full squad to choose from for the Pascoe Vale match.
Saturday night’s match is the first in an incredibly important week for the Club. Following the Pascoe Vale game, South travels to the Gold Coast for their round of 32 Westfield FFA Cup game against Palm Beach SC before flying back to Melbourne for the Dockerty Cup final against the Oakleigh Cannons on Sunday 2 August.

Saturday night’s match kicks off at 7pm at CB Smith Reserve, Fawkner. Those unable to make the game can follow it with live updates on the South Melbourne FC Facebook page and on the Club’s official Twitter @smfc with the hashtags #PS4NPL and #SMFC
