The season may be over, but there’s no rest for the players of the South Melbourne women’s team, who this week travel to Port Macquarie to participate in the Tracie McGovern Cup tournament. The tournament features teams from all across Australia, allowing the women the rare challenge of playing against club sides from the traditionally stronger states of NSW and Queensland.
South Melbourne will take a composite team, featuring players from both its Premier League side and its U16 side, enabling its up and coming players to gain experience that will prove valuable as they look to challenge for a first team spot next season.
The team faces a tough start to the tournament, playing four group matches on the opening day, before hopefully progressing to the knockout final stages on subsequent days.
