South surge into Hellenic Cup Semi’s

    By Paul Mavroudis

South Melbourne FC’s Hellenic Cup title defence is still on track, after progressing through to the semi-finals of the 2012 Hellenic Cup.

New recruit Glen Trifiro scored a brace, including an unstoppable free kick, while Joe Keenan also got onto the score sheet, to see off a dogged Malvern side in a match played in pouring rain. Having topped the group, South was due to play Altona East Phoenix yesterday in the quarter finals – however Altona East forfeited the match due to the lack of playing stocks.

Thus, South Melbourne FC has progressed to the semi-final against Western Suburbs, who have already defeated South in 2012, in a friendly match played in February. The semi-final will be played at Kingston City’s The Grange Reserve on Wednesday 7th March. The winner of that match will play the winner of the other semi-final, between Heidelberg and Northcote.

    By George Kouroumalis

South went into the game with a relatively strong squad, with new signings Jason and Glen Trifiro, Luke Byles, Dimitri Tsiaris and Bradley Norton all part of a very new look starting eleven.

The first half however was a very scrappy affair, something that was expected given it was the first real competitive hit out for both clubs in almost six months. While South had a few half chances, neither side really looked like scoring.

The second half however was all South Melbourne with the Trifiro brothers controlling the middle of the park, and both Tsiaris and Byles commanding the back as the side started to look relatively comfortable.

The overall dominance was rewarded ten minutes into the second half, when Jason Trifiro latched onto a loose ball to bury it into the back of the net. Minutes later Englishman Kyle Joryeff double South’s advantage with a neat finish of his own.

South continued to attack and could have extended their lead, however, it was not meant to be and South were able to walk away with a comprehensive 2-0 win.

Due to fixture changes by the Hellenic Cup Organising Committee, the match next weekend against Kingston City has been moved. The new kick-off time is at 8pm on Thursday March 1st, with the venue remaining as the Grange Reserve in Clayton North.

    Challenge-Cancer-2012

South Melbourne FC was delighted to host the soccer clinics of the Challenge Soccer Cup in Albert Park .

The camp is designed to give kids with cancer and their brothers and sisters an opportunity to have some time-out from cancer treatment and the rigours of hospital visits through participation in a range of sports activities and workshops.

South Melbourne FC was more than happy to support this charitable cause and play a major role in trying to put a smile on the faces of these brave children.

Players that represented South on the day included Fernando De Moraes, Glen Trifiro, Jason Trifiro, Luke Byles, and Joe Keenan, as well as Team Manager Frank Piccione. Throughout the day, South’s players conducted multiple clinics, teaching the kids a number of training and warm up drills, ball skills training, as well as playing a series of mini games, which lifted the spirits of the kids and players alike.

Nicholas Szkilnik, SMFC representative who coordinated the organisation of the soccer clinic, spoke with smfc.com.au, and commented on the event that “it was great chatting with the kids and they enjoyed telling us stories of other sports and camps Challenge were doing. The kids had a fantastic time on the pitch showing that football has no boundaries and anyone can play, while the SMFC players had a great time entertaining them. Seeing the smiles on their faces despite the difficulties and hurdles they face in dealing with cancer, made it all worthwhile”.

South Melbourne FC is proud to support this wonderful cause and urges all fans to check out the Challenge website (www.challenge.org.au) to learn more about what can be done to support these inspirational kids.

2012 Victorian Premier League Season Fixture Finalised

    Tuesday, 14 February 2012 6:41 PM

The Football Federation Victoria recently released the 2012 Victorian Premier League fixture and it’s a tough start for South Melbourne FC, with three away games in the first four rounds, including against both of last year’s grand finalists.

This season will see both the Moreland Zebras and Southern Stars promoted to the Victorian Premier League.

After an absence of 18 months and calling John Cain Memorial Park as its temporary home, the Club returns to the refurbished Lakeside Stadium. The opening round at Lakeside Stadium sees South take on State League 1 Champions Moreland Zebras, who are back in the Victorian Premier League after a two year absence.

Round 2 sees South travel to Jack Edwards Reserve to take on Oakleigh for an early attempt to avenge last years finals exit at the hands of the Cannons, while Round 3 sees a trip to Green Gully Reserve, where South Melbourne has not won since 1986 where goals from Bobby Russell and Manny Anezakis gave the points to South that day.

Key fixtures include the traditional derby against Heidelberg United where both teams meet in the last fixture of the regular season away at the Olympic Village, while South hosts the Melbourne Knights at Lakeside Stadium in Round 7.

All of South Melbourne FC’s home games this season will be on Sundays at 5pm – with the exception of the Round 5 game against Southern Stars, and the Round 15 game against Richmond, which sees the return of Friday night football at Lakeside.
