    De Nittis returns to Lakeside

    Friday, 9 March 2012 10:40 AM

South Melbourne FC is delighted to announce the return of Gianni De Nittis to Lakeside Stadium for the 2012 Victorian Premier League season.

Gianni De Nittis returns to Lakeside after being released by former coach Eddie Krncevic in May 2011 and joining Northcote City for the remainder of last season.

De Nittis was one of the inaugural players in the South squad in 2005 when the Club returned to the Victorian Premier League and will always be remembered for scoring South’s winning goal against Altona Magic in the 2006 Victorian Premier League Grand Final.

In his previous stint with the Club, he made 117 League appearances and scored 31 League goals. Four of his 31 League goals were in one famous afternoon on ANZAC Day in 2010 against Hume City at Broadmeadows Valley Park, where he joined an elite list of only nine South Melbourne FC players to have scored four goals for the Club in a League match.

Coach Tsolakis will look to use De Nittis as a support to Trent Rixon up front this season, with the two having already linked up together at Northcote City last year.

We wish Gianni all the best for 2012 and beyond

South surge into Hellenic Cup Semi’s

    By Paul Mavroudis

South Melbourne FC’s Hellenic Cup title defence is still on track, after progressing through to the semi-finals of the 2012 Hellenic Cup.

New recruit Glen Trifiro scored a brace, including an unstoppable free kick, while Joe Keenan also got onto the score sheet, to see off a dogged Malvern side in a match played in pouring rain. Having topped the group, South was due to play Altona East Phoenix yesterday in the quarter finals – however Altona East forfeited the match due to the lack of playing stocks.

Thus, South Melbourne FC has progressed to the semi-final against Western Suburbs, who have already defeated South in 2012, in a friendly match played in February. The semi-final will be played at Kingston City’s The Grange Reserve on Wednesday 7th March. The winner of that match will play the winner of the other semi-final, between Heidelberg and Northcote.

  • South Cruise Past Bentleigh in Hellenic Cup Opener

South Cruise Past Bentleigh in Hellenic Cup Opener

    Monday, 20 February 2012 5:41 PM

    By George Kouroumalis

South went into the game with a relatively strong squad, with new signings Jason and Glen Trifiro, Luke Byles, Dimitri Tsiaris and Bradley Norton all part of a very new look starting eleven.

The first half however was a very scrappy affair, something that was expected given it was the first real competitive hit out for both clubs in almost six months. While South had a few half chances, neither side really looked like scoring.

The second half however was all South Melbourne with the Trifiro brothers controlling the middle of the park, and both Tsiaris and Byles commanding the back as the side started to look relatively comfortable.

The overall dominance was rewarded ten minutes into the second half, when Jason Trifiro latched onto a loose ball to bury it into the back of the net. Minutes later Englishman Kyle Joryeff double South’s advantage with a neat finish of his own.

South continued to attack and could have extended their lead, however, it was not meant to be and South were able to walk away with a comprehensive 2-0 win.

Due to fixture changes by the Hellenic Cup Organising Committee, the match next weekend against Kingston City has been moved. The new kick-off time is at 8pm on Thursday March 1st, with the venue remaining as the Grange Reserve in Clayton North.
