Northcote City sent South Melbourne FC crashing back to reality by beating the RHB Singapore Cup Quarter Finalists 3-2 at John Cain Memorial Park on Sunday afternoon. The result has sent Northcote into the top five and keeps South near the bottom of the table, however South still have two games in hand due to participating in the RHB Singapore Cup last week.

South dictated the game early and opened the scoring through Fernando De Moraes in the 24th minute. The Futsalroo was put through on goal and he cleverly rounded Northcote goalkeeper Chris Petropoulos before slotting the ball into the back of the net. The goal re-iterated Fernando’s value to the team, as despite missing the trip to Singapore he was still able to slot back into the senior side and score to extend his lead in the club’s golden boot tally.

Northcote had been dangerous on the counter-attack and had given the South defence plenty of headaches throughout the first half. Their persistence finally paid off ten minutes before halftime when captain Trent Rixon made the South defence pay for failing to clear the ball properly. Rixon blasted in the equalising goal despite goalkeeper Peter Zois’ best efforts to keep the ball out.

The game broke open in the second half, with two goals in a frantic two minutes early on setting the scene for a big finish. Ten minutes into the half, South captain Rama Tavsancioglu conceded a free kick on the edge of the area and Mark McGough sent the Northcote supporters wild with a stunning free kick that soared into the top corner of the net. From the kick-off, South promptly went down the field and leveled when Kyle Joryeff, in his League debut for the club, out-jumped his marker at the back post and headed the ball past Petropoulos to open his scoring account for his new club.

Both teams were now going for the three points, with South enjoying plenty of possession and with Northcote playing a very smart counter-attacking game. With twenty minutes to go, the game was set up for someone to be a hero for their club and that person was Bradley Norton, who received the ball on the left side and fired the ball home to put Northcote in prime position to win the three points. The goal shattered the South players, who until that stage had been looking good to score a third themselves.

There was still time though for South to salvage a draw, and before Norton’s goal coach Vaughan Coveny had already thrown Joe Keenan and Hamid Basma on to try and score. Coveny then introduced Gianni De Nittis to the game, and he combined with the other substitutes to create plenty of chances but for no reward. De Nittis had the best of the chances when he got on the receiving end of a cross but he could only direct his header straight at Petropoulos and the Northcote custodian did an excellent job in keeping the ball out.

South plays the first of its two catch-up matches on Friday night at 8:30pm when the side travels to Kingston Heath Soccer Complex to meet the Bentleigh Greens.

Match Preview: South Melbourne FC vs Northcote City

    Friday, 4 June 2010 12:46 PM

    By John Kyrou

It is back to reality this weekend as South Melbourne FC returns to Victorian Premier League action for the first time in three weeks by entering into a derby against sister club Northcote City at John Cain Memorial Park. Three points is crucial for South as it could potentially see the side climb back into the top five with two catch-up games still to play as well.

South enters the game in excellent form having won its last two games. South beat Sunshine George Cross 3-1 before traveling to Singapore and defeating Gombak United 2-1 in their RHB Singapore Cup first round match. The challenge this week for the coaching staff in Vaughan Coveny and Joe Montemurro has been to ensure that the players quickly re-adjust from Singapore’s humidity to Melbourne’s winter conditions in order to be ready for Sunday’s match.

Kyle Joryeff and Hamid Basma both made their South debuts in Singapore and both players will be pressing for selection this Sunday in order to make their League debuts for the club. These signings have given the coaching staff more headaches, firstly because both players impressed in Singapore and secondly because two of the club’s best players in Fernando De Moraes and Joe Keenan did not even travel to Singapore and are therefore fresh and rested.

Northcote has proven this season that they will not be easy to beat, having held South to a 3-3 draw in round three and being 3-1 up during the match. Northcote currently sit in sixth position on the ladder, one point ahead of a South side that has two games in hand. Northcote coach Peter Tsolakis (a former championship player with South) said over summer that he would keep faith in the players that got his side promoted and thus far his squad has proven that they are more than capable of not only staying in the VPL but possibly even being finalists. Undoubtedly the player to watch out for is captain Trent Rixon, who is equal leading goal scorer in the VPL this season and who scored twice against South in round three.

The match kicks off at 3pm on Sunday at John Cain Memorial Park in Northcote. The match is a South Melbourne FC home game despite the fact that the game is being played at Northcote City’s home ground, therefore South Melbourne FC members and sponsors are entitled to the usual privileges that they enjoy at home matches.

    Kyle-Joryeff

South Melbourne FC is pleased to formally announce the signings of Kyle Joryeff and Hamid Basma, with both players expected to make their League debuts against Northcote City this Sunday.

Kyle Joryeff joins South from Sunshine George Cross, where he had been playing excellent football and had scored quality goals as an attacking player. Joryeff made his South debut by featuring in the starting eleven against Gombak United in the RHB Singapore Cup first round and it was his cross from the right side that led to Daniel Vasilevski opening the scoring. Apart from setting up the goal, the Englishman made several excellent runs down the right flank, something that the coaching staff and supporters are hoping that he can continue doing for South for the rest of the VPL season.

Hamid Basma joins South from rivals Heidelberg United, where ironically his only goal for the Bergers was in the 1-1 draw against South in round 6. Basma made his South debut as a substitute in Singapore and he nearly scored within a minute of taking to the field but was denied by the Gombak goalkeeper. Basma arrives as a highly-rated striker, who is big and strong, technically sound and with a powerful shot on him. His arrival brings more selection headaches for the coaching staff, with Gianni De Nittis and Joseph Youssef linking well together up front in recent weeks.

South Melbourne FC welcomes Kyle Joryeff and Hamid Basma to the club and wishes both players all the best for the League and Cup seasons this year.

    South Combat Gombak!

    By John Kyrou in Singapore

South Melbourne FC has progressed to the Quarter Final stage of the RHB Singapore Cup following a deserved 2-1 victory over S-League outfit Gombak United at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore on Wednesday evening. South overcame the humid conditions as well as Jalan Besar’s artificial surface to record the historic win thanks to goals by Daniel Vasilevski and Joseph Youssef.

South’s intentions were clear from the kick-off, with the focus being on scoring an early goal. This occurred in the 12th minute when new signing Kyle Joryeff intercepted Gombak’s Park Kang Jin’s misplaced pass and crossed. Gianni De Nittis flicked the ball onto the back post where Vasilveski was on hand to tap home past Gombak goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam.

Gombak equalised after 28 minutes when striker Agu Casmir turned outside the area and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the goal. The goal gave Gombak some momentum however South were the team looking more likely to score the next goal. After 38 minutes, South regained the lead and ultimately scored the winning goal when Vasilevski’s perfectly weighted through-ball for Youssef culminated in the big forward firing a shot into the bottom far corner to make the score 2-1.

South should have finished the game off in the second half as the side dominated possession and created several excellent opportunities to score. Youssef volleyed a brilliant cross from Joryeff wide and then later on rounded Nizam but put too much weight on his touch to get around the keeper, with the result being a goalkick. Late into the match, substitute Hamid Basma also found himself one-on-one with Nizam but the goalkeeper won the battle by making a good save off South’s new signing.

After the match, coach Vaughan Coveny said how “we don’t play or train on an artificial surface back home, so it was very difficult for us to adapt. I’m very proud of how my players battled and fought for the victory tonight, and it’s a huge morale-boosting win for the club.”

FINAL SCORE: SOUTH MELBOURNE 2-1 GOMBAK UNITED (HT: 2-1)

    South Melbourne:
Peter Zois, Rhodri Payne, Steven O’Dor, Daniel Vasilevski (Sebastian Petrovic 90′), Carl Recchia, Gianni De Nittis, Joseph Youssef (Hamid Basma 84′), Rama Tavsancioglu, Marinos Gasparis, James Stefanou, Kyle Joryeff (Sam Torrens 81′)
(Scorers: Daniel Vasilevski 12′, Joseph Youssef 38′)

    Gombak United:

  • Media Release: SMFC’s Response to Appeals Board Decision

Media Release: SMFC’s Response to Appeals Board Decision

    Thursday, 20 May 2010 9:54 AM

The Club wishes to announce that the FFV Appeals Board released its decision on the Club’s appeal in relation to the FFV Tribunal decision on the charges arising out of its recent match against Heidelberg United FC. The Appeals Board also published its reasons for its decision.

Although South Melbourne FC was successful in relation to all 3 matters it appealed, the Appeals Board substituted a new charge and found the Club guilty of it. The Club was deducted 6 points in relation to that charge.

The Club appealed the finding of guilt in relation to Fixed Penalty Charge MFP10, the life bans imposed on 3 of its supporters and the result of the match which had been awarded as a 3 – 0 win to Heidelberg.

The Appeals Board found the Club not guilty of charge MFP10, drastically reduced the bans in relation to the 2 supporters who pursued the appeal and reinstated the result to 1-1 which was the score when the match was abandoned in time added on for injuries. By way of clarification, the club advises that it appealed on behalf of its supporters because they had not been separately charged and had been given life bans by the Tribunal in their absence. As they had not been charged, the club lodged the appeal on their behalf.

Despite wholly succeeding on the 3 matters it brought before the Appeals Board, the club was advised in the reasons for decision published by the Board that it was found guilty of a different offence relating to the invasion of the pitch by its supporters and was deducted 6 points.

The Club is disappointed at the decision and intends to appeal.
