    SMFC Women secure minor premiership after 2-0 win

    SMFC secured the minor premiership after a 2-0 victory over Geelong Galaxy United at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

    The South girls started brightly in the first half with a delightful through ball by Lisa De Vanna to Melina Ayres who banged home the first in the fourth minute.

    The legendary Matilda striker doubled the advantage with an outrageous volleyed goal as South went into half-time with a 2-0 lead.

    The girls continued to strive in the second half with Melina Ayres smashing yet another shot into the post in the 66th minute as South held onto secure a 2-0 victory over Geelong Galaxy United at Lakeside Stadium.

    The girls will now shift their focus to Calder United  in the Qualifying Final when the two teams meet at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

    South Melbourne meet Geelong Galaxy for the third time season with South striving to secure the minor premiership after coming on back of an impressive 9-0 victory over Senior NTC, while Geelong Galaxy is coming from a 2-1 loss to the Bulleen Lions.

    South Melbourne (WWWWW)

    The girls have had an impressive five weeks with five wins in a row, including an impressive 9-0 victory over Senior NTC. Two points clear of Calder United on top of the table, he girls will be striving for the minor premiership when they meet Geelong Galaxy at home on Saturday afternoon.

    Geelong Galaxy United (WWWLL)

    Geelong Galaxy have had a solid five weeks with three wins in their past five matches. Coming from a narrow 2-1 victory over Southern United, Geelong Galaxy United suffered another 2-1 defeat to the hands of FC Bulleen courtesy of a second half goal to Coppock in the 87th minute. With one game to go in the WNPL competition, the visitors will be striving to finish the season off strongly with a victory against South Melbourne away from home on Saturday afternoon.

    The last time these two sides met was in Round 18 where South Melbourne drew 3-3 with Geelong Galaxy United at Banyul Warri Reserve.

    There have been two draws between the two sides in the past two matches.

    Marafioti selected for Young Socceroos squad

    South Melbourne FC is delighted to announce the selection of Giordano Marafioti in the Young Socceroos Squad for it’s upcoming tour of Qatar.

    Over the past few seasons Marafioti has grown into a dynamic and explosive striker, including dominating through the NPL Victoria Under 20 competition in 2017. With 22 league goals to his name, he has also been an integral part of Sasa Kolman’s side reaching the top of the table.

    Speaking to smfc.com.au, SMFC Youth Director Andrew Messourouni was excited for the young striker. “The selection of Marafioti indicates the strength of the SMFC Youth Program, which is starting to bear fruit after many years of hard work. We expect Marafioti to play a big role in the Senior Squad in 2018 after having a break out year in our Under 20s, scoring over 20 times and leading the Under to a Championship”.

    Mesourouni praised the work of Under 20’s coach and mentor Sasa Kolman. “Under the guidance of one our best coaches Sasha Kolman, Marafioti has been able to further develop into a powerhouse forward, which has culminated in Young Socceroos call up and selection, Furthermore the future of the clubs senior team success is in it’s youth program and we are really excited about the kids that are about to come through the system over the next couple of years.”

    We wish Giordano all the best in his time with the Australian team.

    South to host Members Information Session

    South Melbourne FC would like to welcome all of its members for a special club information session at the 1959 Bar & Grill on Tuesday 12th September.

    The session will aim to allow the Board of Directors to engage with its members, while being able to receive feedback regarding many areas of the club at this point in time. This includes the use of the Social Club and Futsal centre.

    The information session will also give members an opportunity to raise any issues and concerns with the Board of Directors.

    Furthermore, the club has numerous ideas to engage supporters for the FFA Cup match on the Gold Coast, many of which will be discussed on the night.

    SMFC secure impressive 9-0 victory over Senior NTC

    South Melbourne sit two points clear of Calder United on top of the table after an impressive 9-0 victory over Senior NTC  at Knox on Saturday afternoon.

    In what was raining goals at Knox, the girls were able to find their first through Jamie Pollock who was able to find the back of the net in the 29th minute.

    South attacking midfielder Tiffany Eliadis was able to get the visitors second with a header from a corner kick in the 43rd minute as the girls held a 2-0 lead at half time.

    The girls continued to cause damage on the scoreboard in the second half with a third from Lisa De Vanna who whipped the ball from the right flank in the 52nd minute.

    Eliadis was able to find the back of the net to score her second for the afternoon after a rebound save by the keeper in the 59th minute.

    In what continued to be a disastrous day for Senior NTC, an own goal from the home side extended South’s lead to 5-0 in the 66th minute.

    South continued to fire up front, with a Nicolaci penalty seeing South with a 6-0 lead in the 73rd minute.

    South Melbourne leading goal scorer Melina Ayres continued to hurt Senior NTC with a strike from 25 yard blasting into the back of the net in the 86th minute.

    A minute later and Ayres had a double after a header into the back post saw the girls with a 8-0 lead.

    Alexandra Gummer capped off an excellent day for the girls with an overhead kick into the back of the net as the girls secured an impressive 9-0 victory at Knox.

    The girls will now strive to finish the season on a high and win the minor premiership when they meet Geelong Galaxy United at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

    Semi-Final Preview :: SMFC take on Bentleigh Greens at home

    South Melbourne meet the Bentleigh Greens in the semi-finals with South Melbourne coming from a one week’s rest after finishing in second position on the ladder, while the Bentleigh Greens are coming from  an impressive 4-0 victory over Green Gully in the elimination final.

     

    South Melbourne (WLLWL)

    Coming from a disappointing 3-2 loss to Kingston City courtesy of a second half goal to Iaconis in the 69th minute, the boys had a one week’s rest after securing second position on the ladder.   Now coming up against a side they defeated three weeks ago, the boys will be striving to secure an important victory  against the Bentleigh Greens at Lakeside Stadium to book a place in their third consecutive grand final on Friday night.

    Bentleigh Greens (WLLDW)

    Coming from a 0-0 draw against the Oakleigh Cannons, Bentleigh were able to secure an impressive 4-0 victory over Green Gully in the elimination final.  Coming up now against the Defending Champions, they will be striving to put their 2-0 loss against South Melbourne in Round 25 behind them when they meet the hosts’ for the second consecutive time at Lakeside Stadium this Friday night.

    The last time these two sides met was in Round 25 where South Melbourne secured a 2-0 victory over the Bentleigh Greens at Lakeside Stadium.

    South Melbourne have won three of the past five matches against the Bentleigh Greens.

    FFA CUP Preview:: SMFC take on Sorrento at home in Round of 16

    SMFC take on Sorrento in the FFA Cup Round of 16 at Lakeside Stadium on Wednesday night, with both sides striving to make it into the FFA Cup Quarter-Finals for the first time in their history.

    South Melbourne (WLLWL)

    Coming from a 2-0 victory over the Bentleigh Greens, the boys were unable to challenge Heidelberg United for the Premiers plate with the defending champions going down 3-2 to Kingston City in the last round of the home and away season last weekend. With a thrilling 1-0 victory against the Edgeworth Eagles leading them into the Round of 16 courtesy of a Milos Lujic winner in the 94th minute, the boys will be striving to put the disappointing loss behind them when they meet Sorrento at Lakeside Stadium on Wednesday night.

    Sorrento (WWWL)

    Sorrento is in good form at the moment with four wins in the past five matches despite losing 2-1 to the Stirling Lions last weekend. With a thrilling 1-0 victory against last year’s semi-finalists Canberra Olympic in the FFA Cup Round of 32 courtesy of a Sean Canham winner in the 7th minute, the visitors will be striving to cause another upset when they head east to take on South Melbourne.

    Preview:: South take on Kingston City at home

    South Melbourne will meet Kingston City for the second time this season with the defending champions aiming to challenge Heidelberg United for the NPL title following their 2-0 victory over the Bentleigh Greens, while Kingston City will be seeking a consolation win in the last round of the home and away season following their 4-0 loss to Heidelberg United last weekend.

    South Melbourne (WWLLW)

    After two consecutive losses in the NPL Competition, the boys were able to bounce back with a 2-0 victory over the Bentleigh Greens courtesy of a Leigh Minopoulos brace last weekend. With the NPL title up for grabs, South will be striving to challenge Heidelberg United for the premiership plate in the last round of the home and away season with a good win against Kingston City on Sunday afternoon.

    Kingston City (WWLLL)

    Coming from a narrow 1-0 loss to Avondale, Kingston City were unable to bounce back last weekend after suffering a 4-0 thrashing to ladder leaders Heidelberg United. In tenth position and out of the finals race, Kingston City will be seeking a consolation win against the defending champions away from home.

    The last time these two sides met was in Round 13 this year where South Melbourne secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Kingston City at the Grange Reserve courtesy of a second half goal to Matt Millar in the 74th minute.

    De Vanna leads South to a 4-2 victory over Alamein

    South Melbourne sit five points clear of Calder United on top of the table after their impressive 4-2 victory over Alamein courtesy of a second half masterclass by Lisa De Vanna on Sunday afternoon.

    Alamein started brightly in the early minutes of the first half  with Janna Lawson’s shot going into the bottom left corner of the post in the eighth minute to score the visitors first goal for the match.

    Just minutes later,  South Melbourne young gun Melina Ayres was able to score the equaliser for the hosts’ and her 32nd goal for the season following a scramble in the box in the 11th minute.

    Ayres was unlucky not to score a double after her long range strike was deflected wide for a corner in the 15th minute.

    Ayres and De Vanna continued to look dangerous up front for South, with Ayres denied off the line following a blocked shot by De Vanna in the 21st minute.

    Alamein were unlucky not to be 2-1 up after Schreuder was denied a goal from long range after being flagged offside in the 30th minute as the scored remained 1-1 at half-time.

    South started brightly in the second half with De Vanna’s shot from close range going just over the crossbar in the 46th minute.

    The home side were unlucky not to find themselves with a 2-1 lead after De Vanna’s penalty was blocked by Hudson in the 49th minute.

    Just minutes later, Tiffany Eliadis was able to score South’s second after heading the ball from the corner into the back of the net in the 52nd minute.

    South Melbourne Women’s Football Ambassador Lisa De Vanna was able to score from a free-kick to extend South’s lead to 3-1 in the 65th minute.

    Alamein were able to peg one back just two minutes later, with a long range shot from Marielle Pastor going over the top of Molly May Ramsay and into the back of the net in the 67th minute.

    De Vanna was finally able to score her second for the afternoon after her shot from close range dribbled into the back of the net following a beautiful pass by Ella Mastrantonio in the 75th minute as the girls ran out 4-2 winners at Lakeside Stadium.
