Match Preview – FFA Cup R4 – SMFC v Keysborough

The National Premier League clubs enter the Fourth Round of FFA Cup qualifying this weekend and South Melbourne FC has been drawn against Keysborough Soccer Club. The match will be played at Northcote City’s John Cain Reserve on Saturday lunchtime.

As South was drawn before Keysborough in the live draw conducted by Football Federation Victoria on Tuesday, it reserved the right to host the game. With Lakeside Stadium unavailable this weekend due to the Formula One Grand Prix however, South decided to partner with Northcote City and host a double-header at John Cain Reserve (Northcote will host St Albans following the South game).

Keysborough are in Zagame’s State League Four – effectively the sixth tier of Victorian football – and is possibly the lowest-ranked opponent that South has ever come up against in a competitive fixture. South has only entered FFA Cup qualifying in this round but Keysborough have already played three matches to get to this stage. They defeated Darebin United 4-2 in the first round (28 February), Old Melburnians 2-1 in the second round (5 March) and then thumped the Northern Falcons 5-0 in the third round last Sunday.

It is expected that South coach Chris Taylor will make changes to his team for Saturday’s match, having started the same eleven in all four PS4 NPL Victoria matches so far this season. Having the cup tie only five days after Monday’s tough league match at Bulleen and then only having a five day buffer before the next league match at Richmond (Thursday night) is another reason why Taylor will make changes.

Starting berths may be given to players like Zaim Zeneli in goal, Kristian Konstantinidis, Philzgerald Mbaka, Mathew Theodore, Amadu Koroma, Luke Eyles, Chris Irwin, Andy Kecojevic, Leigh Minopoulos and Stephen Hatzikostas. Eyles, Mbaka and Minopoulos played in the Under 20s against Bulleen on Monday night whilst Kecojevic, Hatzikostas and Theodore (who scored) came off the bench to help change the Senior Men’s game as South scored two late goals to pinch a draw.

Saturday’s match against Keysborough SC kicks off at 12:15pm. 2016 SMFC members are entitled to FREE entry until 1pm by showing their membership card at the gate. Following the conclusion of our match, Northcote City will host St Albans at 3pm.

  • Late Drama as South Scrapes Draw

Late Drama as South Scrapes Draw

Two late goals from substitute Mathew Theodore and centre-forward Milos Lujic saw South Melbourne FC scrape an unlikely draw in its PS4 NPL Victoria match against FC Bulleen Lions at a packed Veneto Club on Monday night.

South returned to the venue for the first time since March 2007 and clearly struggled with the synthetic surface that had been laid on the Veneto Club since its last visit. Bulleen rightly used this to their advantage, starting very posititvely and taking the game to an opponent that had not conceded a league goal in 2016.

The home side took a deserved lead after ten minutes after a cross from the right found Sami Nour at the back post to score past Nikola Roganovic. Bulleen almost went 2-0 up shortly afterwards but Roganovic made an excellent double-save to deny Shayan Alinejad. The second goal eventually arrived after 19 minutes, when Takanori Nishimoto got on the end of a set piece to flick the ball past Roganovic and into the back of the net.

Coach Chris Taylor made a halftime switch, replacing Iqi Jawadi with Theodore. South settled in the second half but rarely troubled Bulleen goalkeeper Griffin McMaster and continued to ride its luck when the home side broke forward quickly. As the match pressed on, Taylor made another tactical switch by substituting Tim Mala off, switching Matthew Foschini to right back and bringing on Stephen Hatzikostas to replace Foschini in holding midfield.

Bulleen had a number of chances to finish South off, firstly when 2006 SMFC Championship player Gianni De Nittis forced a smart save by Roganovic at his near post. South’s custodian – who had been excellent all night – then almost gifted a goal to Bulleen after mistiming a clearance but he quickly got back to block Nour’s resultant shot. With fifteen minutes remaining, a wicked deflection initially wrong-footed Roganovic but again the goalkeeper made a vital save to deny Bulleen a third goal.

With six minutes of normal time remaining and amongst a sea of players in the Bulleen area, Theodore’s quick shot took a deflection and the ball looped over McMaster and into the back of the net. South was suddenly back in the match and still had time to score again. With the huge away support at the Veneto Club starting to raise its voice again, South pushed for another goal.

Four minutes later the comeback was complete when Lujic got to the ball before McMaster to head Nick Epifano’s cross into the unguarded Bulleen net to make the score 2-2. It was Lujic’s 49th league goal for SMFC in 60 league matches, which sees him overtake Dougy Brown in outright tenth place on South’s all-time leading goal scorers in league competition.

Despite being pegged back, Bulleen still should have won the game when substitute Rodrigo Covarrubias was through one-on-one but Roganovic again made a huge block to ensure that South would leave the Veneto Club with a point.

The news was better in the Under 20s as South Melbourne defeated FC Bulleen Lions 4-3 in another high-scoring match for Brian MacNicol’s side. South raced to a 3-0 halftime lead before just managing to hold off the home side in the second half. South’s goals were scored by Dean Nicolaidis, Leigh Minopoulos (penalty kick), Philzgerald M’baka and Giordano Marafioti.

There is a break in league football next weekend as the Fourth Round of FFA Cup qualifying begins. Keep an on smfc.com.au and South’s official social media pages for who our opponent will be and when the match will take place.

  • Match Preview – NPL R4 – FC Bulleen Lions v SMFC

Match Preview – NPL R4 – FC Bulleen Lions v SMFC

South Melbourne FC returns to the Veneto Club for the first time in nine years when it faces the promoted FC Bulleen Lions in Monday night PS4 NPL Victoria action.

Chris Taylor’s team goes into the match high on confidence, having secured a maximum nine points and having scored 12 and conceded no goals to open its Premiership defence. South has also enjoyed a ten day break following the 2-0 victory against Port Melbourne on Friday 4 March. Iqi Jawadi’s long-range goal and centre-back Luke Adams’ volley from a corner kick secured the three points at Anderson Reserve.

Jawadi had to be substituted after 40 minutes in the Port Melbourne match after picking up a knock, however it turned out to be minor bruising and the hardworking midfielder should be available to play on Monday night at Veneto Club. Taylor tends not to change his winning team so it is expected that South will field the same starting eleven for a fourth consecutive match.

FC Bulleen Lions have begun life in the top flight of Victorian football with a mixed bag of results. Dominic Barba’s team opened its season with a 1-0 loss at Bentleigh then defeated Oakleigh 1-0 before drawing 1-1 with Melbourne Victory last weekend. Having won the League Championship (and automatic promotion) in the 2015 NPL 1 competition, there is obviously a winning culture within the team and Bulleen will rightly feel capable of causing an upset on Monday night. One player to watch out for is former Melbourne Knights player Shayan Alinejad.

South makes its return to the Veneto Club for the first time since goals from Ricky Diaco and Fernando De Moraes gave it a 2-0 win against the Essendon Royals on 16 March 2007. It has been a very popular venue with South fans in the past, with good crowds attending Veneto Club between 2005 and 2007 when South met the Bulleen Zebras and Essendon Royals. In five league matches at Veneto Club, South has won twice, drawn twice and lost once.

Monday night will be the first time that South has played against the entity now known as FC Bulleen Lions, however several Italian-backed clubs have merged and de-merged throughout the years to form what is FC Bulleen Lions today. One of those old clubs was Box Hill, a team that kept getting promoted then relegated from the old Victorian State League in the 1960s and 1970s.

Box Hill played ten top-flight league matches against South Melbourne Hellas in 1961, 1969 and from 1971 to 1973. Hellas won 9 of their 10 league meetings, with the biggest win being a 7-0 thumping at Middle Park on 27 May 1972.

Monday night’s match at the Veneto Club kicks off at 8:30pm.

  • Player Feature :: Tough times shape Adams

Player Feature :: Tough times shape Adams

For any young player, the chance to move to England and chase a professional footballing career would be a dream come true.

One need only look at the new English Premier League television rights deal to see the extent to which English Football has become a powerhouse.

So, when defender Luke Adams was called to try out for Derby County in England’s second tier, he jumped at the chance to prove himself.

However, the Kiwi Youth International’s ambitions of one day playing in the English top flight quickly turned sour.

“It was only two days into my first trial over there and I did my ACL,” Adams tells smfc.com.au.

Any 18-year-old who succumbs to an injury of this severity during the biggest opportunity of their life has the potential to break down mentally. Adams, however, was only made stronger by this setback.

“To have gone through something like that at such a young age was massive for my mental toughness,” he says.

“You’ve got boys like KK (Kristian Konstantinidis), Eagar, Schroen and others at South Melbourne who have done it recently so it’s one of those things that you learn how to handle and get over it and you’re better for it in the long run.”

Despite the injury, Derby offered to keep Adams. At a crossroads, Adams was faced with the choice of leaving and completing his rehabilitation on his own, or staying and recovering overseas.

Ultimately, he decided to sign with the English side.

“It was a big decision for me to stay but I’m glad I did because there’s no way I’d be back to where I am now if I had have left,” Adams says.

“You know how it is you when you are young. I probably would have come back to my mates and not been as diligent with my recovery as I was over there.”

After a stint in the A-League at Wellington Phoenix – in which he made three senior appearances – and a brief period at Waitakere United, Adams joined South Melbourne for the 2015 NPL Victoria season.

Today, as a stalwart in South Melbourne’s central defence, Adams has rediscovered his top form.

In 2015 he played a total of 21 games and contributed to a defence which conceded only 22 goals in 26 games and ultimately won the premiership on goal difference.

Pivotal to South Melbourne’s success last year was the solid centre-half partnership that Adams had formed with Captain and fellow countryman Michael Eagar. The defensive duo form South’s ‘Kiwi Konnection’.

“It’s funny I didn’t really know Eagar before I came to South Melbourne. I knew of him and had had a few chats with him but had never played with him,” Adams says.

“It’s been awesome partnering him down back. We’re always communicating and we’re actually pretty similar defenders so it makes things so much easier.”

Interestingly, Adams has not been a defender for his entire career. For his first ever club, Fencibles United, he played as a striker but was moved into defence at the age of 12. In a way, this has helped him with his defensive responsibilities.

“Having played up front it helps a lot with defending for sure. You know the runs strikers make because you used to make those runs yourself,” he says.

“It also helps with your ball control at a young age. As a striker you get a better understanding and more time on the ball as opposed to being an out-and-out centre back.”

At only 21-years-old, Adams strongly believes that there is still growth to be made in his game. He maintains high hopes of redeeming the misfortune that struck him down during his previous attempt at playing professionally.

“It’s all about consistency for me at the moment. I think it comes with team consistency because if the team is playing well then it sort of means I’m also playing well,” Adams says.

“I’m looking to go pro again if I can, so I’m hoping to really develop and push on this year and who knows what opportunities could be ahead.”

With aspirations of one day returning to professional football put to one side, Adams has his sights firmly set on a stellar 2016 season with South Melbourne. And, if statistics are anything to go by, he is off to a great start.

After three rounds of the 2016 NPL Victoria season, Adams has already contributed to a defensive unit which is yet to concede a goal and sits undefeated on top of the table. Adams also managed to open his goal scoring account with a strike against Port Melbourne in South’s 2-0 round three victory at SS Anderson Reserve.

Match Preview – NPL R3 – Port Melbourne v SMFC

South Melbourne FC will be hoping to make it three wins from three PS4 NPL Victoria matches in 2016 when it faces Port Melbourne at Anderson Reserve on Friday night.

Chris Taylor’s side has opened the 2016 campaign with two straight victories, 10 goals scored and none conceded. The most recent result was the professional 0-4 victory against Northcote City at John Cain Reserve last Saturday, with three second-half goals securing the three points. Nick Epifano has already registered four league goals in 2016, whilst Marcus Schroen and Milos Lujic have two goals each.

Eric Vassiliadis’ Port Melbourne side has enjoyed a solid start to 2016, with an opening-round draw against the Oakleigh Cannons followed by a 1-0 victory against Melbourne Victory last Friday night. Port hasn’t conceded a goal so far in 2016 – like South – and will be hoping to continue that record on Friday night. 2015 South players Bonel Obradovic and David Stirton will feature for Port and will be keen to get three points against their former side.

Taylor tends to not change a winning side and therefore it is expected that South will start Friday night’s game with the same eleven players for a third week in succession.

Should Lujic score against Port Melbourne, he will outright join South Melbourne’s top ten leading goal scorers in the club’s league history. Lujic is currently level with 1980s crowd favourite Dougy Brown (1983-86) in equal tenth position, with both players having scored 48 league goals for the club.

Friday night’s match at Anderson Reserve in Port Melbourne kicks off at 8:30pm.

South Continue Excellent Start to 2016

South Melbourne FC continued its excellent start to its 2016 PS4 NPL Victoria with a professional 4-0 victory against Northcote City at John Cain Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Two goals from Marcus Schroen, a penalty to Nick Epifano and a late goal from Milos Lujic gave South two wins from its opening two matches and a +10 goal difference.

Chris Taylor and his side came into Saturday’s game expecting a difficult time. Many have predicted Northcote to struggle in 2016 but South themselves historically had been very average against Northcote, only defeating them twice in seven attempts at John Cain Reserve.

The away side opened the scoring after ten minutes. Matthew Millar hit a fierce shot across goal that beat goalkeeper Phillip Petrovski but not the far post and the ball rebounded back to South’s right-sided midfielder. Millar then cut the ball back into the penalty area and referee Alex King awarded a spot kick after spotting a handball. Petrovski guessed the right way for the spot kick but couldn’t stop Epifano from registering the first goal of the afternoon.

The home side had a wonderful chance to level when, following a scramble in the South penalty area, referee King spotted an infringement by goalkeeper Nikola Roganovic and issued the custodian with a yellow card. Michael Karvouniaris stepped up to take Northcote’s spot kick but Roganovic dived to his left and made the all-important block to preserve his clean sheet and keep South’s lead intact. Karvounaris almost levelled a short time later with a header that beat Roganovic but not the crossbar as South went into the halftime break narrowly ahead.

South doubled its lead early in the second half, when Millar played Schroen through to score his first goal in a South Melbourne shirt. With a 2-0 lead, the three points appeared confirmed for South, though a couple of lapses at the back almost allowed Northcote through to pull a goal back. Lujic confirmed the three points twelve minutes from time by scoring a tap-in following a scramble in the box, before Schroen scored his second goal of the afternoon three minutes from the end to make the final score 4-0.

Saturday’s win was Chris Taylor’s 50th league win as South Melbourne coach (in 73 matches), an overall winning record of 68%. It was also South’s best win against Northcote since the clubs first met in 2010.

Milos Lujic’s goal was his 48th league goal in 58 league games for South, putting him in equal tenth with the great Dougy Brown (1983-1986) on South’s all-time top goal scorers in league competition.

In the Under 20s, Northcote City and South Melbourne drew 3-3. South took an early 2-0 lead with a penalty from Milan Jovanovic (2′) and a goal at the back post from Nashir Hussainy (18′), however Northcote scored two goals to be level at the halftime break. Luke Eyles (50′) restored South’s lead with a fantastic strike but Northcote again levelled in what was a free-flowing and end-to-end match.

    Match Preview – NPL R2 – Northcote v SMFC

South Melbourne FC will be looking to continue its excellent start to the 2016 PS4 NPL Victoria season when Chris Taylor’s side faces Northcote City at John Cain Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

South silenced many pre-season critics last Sunday evening at Lakeside Stadium with a thumping record 6-0 hammering of old rivals Heidelberg United. Nick Epifano registered a hat-trick in the first half alone as Milos Lujic, substitute Mathew Theodore and Iqi Jawadi also got on the score sheet.

Matthew Millar had a very solid debut on the right side of midfield for South, having only signed a few days earlier during the final day of the transfer window. Fellow debutant Matthew Foschini also played well but was substituted and sent to hospital for precautionary checks after a head clash in the first half. Thankfully for South, he should be clear to play against Northcote on Saturday.

Alex Gymnopoulos’ Northcote City side opened their 2016 NPL Victoria season with a 1-0 defeat against the Melbourne Victory at Epping Stadium last Saturday afternoon. With a relatively youthful squad and the departures of several experienced players over the summer, many people are predicting Northcote to spend the 2016 season fighting relegation. Despite this, South will expect a tough match due to recent history.

South’s record against Northcote City at John Cain Reserve is very average, with only two hard-fought wins in seven attempts since Northcote joined Victoria’s top flight in 2010. Northcote enjoys a narrow lead over South in head-to-head league meetings between the clubs but South remains undefeated in the last four meetings thanks to three wins and a draw.

Saturday’s match at John Cain Reserve kicks off at 5pm.

    South Melbourne FC AGM Announced

    RE: Annual General Meeting

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of South Melbourne Football Club Ltd will be held as follows:

    Date
    Wednesday 23rd of March 2016

    Location
    Presidents Room
    Lakeside Stadium
    25 Albert Road Drive
    Albert Park VIC 3206

    Time
    9.00 pm

It is intended to propose two Special Resolutions at the AGM providing for the amendment of the South Melbourne Football Club Ltd Constitution. Pursuant to Section 249L(1)(c) of the Corporations Act 2001, Notice is hereby given that three Special Resolutions will be proposed. The Special Resolutions are as follows:

    Special Resolutions:

    A. That Clause 1.1(a) of the Constitution be amended so that the full stop after the last word being “club” be removed and the following words added:

“which, among others, specifically include the fostering and advancement of men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ football equally.”

    B. That Clause 9.1A be inserted after Clause 9.1 and before Clause 9.2 of the Constitution and shall read as follows:

“That the Board of Directors shall include at least one female director at all times

    C. Add Subclause 1.1(k) which shall read as follows:

“to promote the involvement of men, women, boys and girls in all functions and facets of the club equally and with a view to the club being represented and governed equally by men and women and to create and maintain an environment in which men, women, boys and girls will all thrive.”

The agenda shall be as follows:

    1. Confirmation of Minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting;

    2. Finance Report and presentation of Audited Accounts of the Club;

    3. Appointment of Auditors and determination of their remuneration;

    4. Consider and vote upon the three proposed Special Resolutions

    5. Any other business of which due notice shall have been given.

Explanatory Note relating to the proposed Special Resolution:

The proposed Special Resolutions are required to give effect to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) entered into by South Melbourne Football Club Ltd (SMFC) and South Melbourne Women’s Football Club (SMWFC), which, in turn, led to the one-club policy, which has been adopted by SMFC.

SMWFC has passed the necessary Special Resolution to give effect to the MOU and it has embraced the one-club policy.

The MOU provides that SMFC will operate all women’s and girls’ teams which were previously operated by SMWFC as it is able to do under FFV governing rules. Presently, SMWFC is not a member of WNPL, and neither SMFC nor SMWFC have any female teams playing in the WNPL and accordingly, SMFC is free to field all women’s and girls’ teams previously operated by SMWFC. It is anticipated that SMFC will also join the WNPL in the near future and as such, it will be fielding women’s and girls’ teams in the WNPL.

The WNPL, like the NPL, limits the number of teams which can be fielded by a club. It has been agreed by SMFC and SMWFC that if women and girls are fielded in the WNPL, such remaining women’s and girls’ teams (“Community Teams”) will be fielded and operated by SMWFC and SMFC will ensure that SMWFC has access to all facilities to which it has previously had access to ensure it is able to properly operate those teams.

The joining together again of our club so that it again fields men’s, women’s, boys’ and girls’ teams under the one club banner has been welcomed universally and the club seeks that the Special Resolutions be adopted to give full effect to these positive changes.

Explanatory Note relating to the proposed Special Resolution:

As all members are aware, South Melbourne Football Club Ltd (SMFC) adopted a new Constitution following the 2009 AGM as required by FFV.

For many years now, the Club has operated with the same Board of Directors having been elected to the Boards of both South Melbourne Hellas Club Ltd (SMHC) and South Melbourne Football Club (SMFC).

The Board of SMHC proposes the three Special Resolutions because it considers it is best for the club that the provisions of its Constitution in respect of the number of directors be consistent with the provisions of the SMFC Constitution. It is also of the view that it is important and appropriate to update these provisions of its Constitution to reflect modern practice, as provided in the new South Melbourne Football Club Ltd Constitution and also to reflect the Club’s current operational needs, the manner in which it has operated in recent years and how it proposes to continue to be operated and governed.

We urge all members to support and adopt these Special Resolutions which will assist the orderly and efficient conduct of the Club’s business.
